I bought another bum acer from someone for 50bucks. So far the other one i had, as been working great. If anyone recalls it would lock up, so i disabled the battery driver, and it works perfect.

Anyways. this new one Is acting really weird. When it boots, it will last a few minutes at best, then lock up. Sometimes it wont do anything when the power buton is pressed. Lights come on, but no actual booting. Then somethimes, it wil lock up mid boot. Sometimes, it will display system specs followed by a keyboard error, and sometimes the screen gets these lines in it.

I booted it up, and did the disable the battery driver trick. It's been booted for about 10minutes, running solid, but there is a crackling noise coming out of the speakers. I also noticed some of the keys around the enter key are sticky when pressed. I popped some of the bottom peices off, and nothign looks wet. If need be, i'll tear it all the way down, but i'll see what i can get here first.

    Anyone have any ideas?

The model is an Acer Aspire 5100 on XP Pro.

Remove the battery and run the computer off the mains. This could probably cause the startup problems. I have seen this happen before but with other models. But its worth a shot.

The crackling noise can be resolved by updating your audio drivers to more updated ones. Acer usually doesn't have updated drivers so its best to get it from the manufacturer's website (Realtek, etc).

There also may be a virus on the hard drive. Try and do a clean format using the recovery CD/DVD/Partition. This can be achieved by pressing ALT-F10 when you first start up your computer. This will erase all data on the C: drive. Also if this method does not work then you will need the recovery CD's.

Do the lines occur all the time? or do they occur in like BIOS only? POST? Windows?

You might also have some faulty RAM, might be a good idea to test it: http://www.memtest.org/

The lines happen randomly. Sometims the lines won't show, and the other errors will happen. Sometims it's lines.

I ahve the old 512mb of ram i took out of my other acer when i put a gb in it. I'll see if it is the same, and works.

    Any other ideas?

I tore the entire thing down today, and nothing is broken, or burned, or wet. Everything is perfectly intact. Then i put it back together, and tried every combination possible with the 2 sticks of ram i had. That left me with two conclusions. With one stick, it wouldnt do anything, and with the other single stick, it would boot, but the crackly noises were there, then it would lock up, and/or screen fuzz out. So i tried to reformat, but it wont stay running long enough to finish this task. I'm not getting the keyboard error anymore, i dont know if there is any light to that or not. I tried to find some ram locally incase that didnt fix it, i could return it, but no go there. I am really kinda leaning towards the ram, but i dont want to buy some, adn not be able to return it just on a hunch.

I also reset the bios to factory settings.

It can either be a problem from the video card or the lcd monitor inversion cable or the monitor itself. (for the lines). A friend of mine had the same problem on his monitor. It used to come and go between several boots, meaning, on one boot you will notice there is nothing wrong, next time you boot there will be some lines here and there, colored lines. At first it was temporary, but then as time passed, the lines became permanent and nearly the entire monitor is engulfed by it.

Largely when i look at it in your case, it seems to be a total hardware problem regarding the motherboard.

It's kinda similar to that. I am thinking about hooking up my lcd from my good acer to this one.
