I have 2001 Lci acer inspire notebook. I bought it 4 months ago when I was in USA. now after I logon to windows I hear a buzzing sound coming from inside. This is not hdd, cd rom or cpu fan. I could fix this when I change power options But now Whatever I do This sound is constant. In turkey, Istanbul where I live, There is an Acer service who do not consider this sound as a problem. this sound is heard for 2 or 3 days. Please Help me if you know any further info.
I want to send my laptop To Acer USA which i consider it is more reliable than the one in Istanbul.

Acutally, this is a obscure but known problem (at least with HP). I have an HP NX7000 (Pentium M 1.6Ghz) and it did the same when my power management setting was on Always On. Changing it to anything else would eliminate the buzz/squeal sound. After getting the engineer to reproduce the noise (I knew I wasn't crazy [
]) they traced it back to a capacitor or resistor (can't remember which). Their solution was to put some glue over the problematic part. I personally didn't find this a good solution, so I returned the unit. There was another couple users with Acer's on this site that had this same problem. I don't know whatever happened to them, but this was WAY back. I think this problem may be related to Pentium M notebooks in general, or at least the ones that utilize this ODM.
There was a suggestion from someone in the HP section, they said to disable the USB power management features/options in Device Manager and it would eliminate the noise. Since I already returned mine, I couldn't test the solution. You may also want to plug something into your USB port (mouse, keyboard, USB Drive) that actually draws power (not a USB cable for printer when it's off, doesn't draw power). This seemed to have eliminated the noise for me as well, but it's a pain to always have something connected to my USB port.
Best thing to do is to try to re-produce it in front of an Acer Tech, this way you can prove that it's making the noise and therefore they have to resolve it one way or another.
Good luck!

after reading this thread, i did a close inspection on my 1681wlci.
the buzz noise is there but it's not that obvious.
with a USB mouse plugged in, there's some very weak buzz.
With the USB mouse unplugged, the buzz noise is somewhat a bit more obvious and it seems to be making the noise at a set interval. something like a BIOS error beep, i m just comparing the noise pattern.
however, when i test this. i hv a tv set running n i stick my ear very close(about 1 to 2cm from surface) to the lower right of the keyboard area, which i feels houses the centrino n radeon 9700(Coz this is the area that gets hotter, compared to the harddisk area.)
hope it wont pose an issue though... -
I don't think the noise will cause any problems, other than you goind crazy with the sound continuously buzzing. On the HP NX7000, it was in the area of one of the chipsets, either the northbridge or southbridge. Also, it was located on the upper right corner of the unit.
