Hello to all, I’m new to this site. I found it while searching for Windows Vista clean install info.

I have an Acer Aspire 5050-5430 with Windows Vista Home Premium. It has the Cam at the top of the display and the media card reader. It came with no CD’s and I was told that the only CD’s I could get are the recovery CD’s. This will not work as I plan on conducting a fresh and clean install of the operating system. While I’m at that I will be getting rid of the hard drive partitioning and the Acer utilities. No offence to Acer fans but I don’t need the extra software, just what is needed to run the computer. So I need help finding the right drivers to get for this clean install.

    I have found some drivers at http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/webpage.cfm?siteid=7117&areaid=2&website=AcerPanAm.com http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/AcerDrivers/Aspire 5050.pdf?CFID=6656691&CFTOKEN=15159582
after talking with Acer tech support but most of the versions seem to be old compared to what I have found installed on my computer.

Where do I need to go to get the most up-to-date drivers?
Where do I need to look to make sure I have a complete list of drivers i.e. Drivers for the Chipset, which is not even listed at the Acer web site listed in my post.
How should I verify what drivers I need?

Acer would only help me recover my computer not get the correct drivers for a fresh and clean install.

So this is what the sticker reads…

    AMD Athlon 64x2 Mobile Technology TK-53 (1.7 GHz, 2 x 256 KB L2 cache)
    14.1” WXGA Acer CrystalBrite LCD
Up to 256MB ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 HyperMemory
    120GB HDD
    DVD-Super Multi DL
    1GB DDR2
    802.1 b/g WLAN

From Device Manager I figured I have

Disk Drive – Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00 ATA Device
Display Adapter – ATI Radeon Xpress 1100
DVD/CD-ROM drives – Optiarc DVD RW AD-7560 ATA Device
Imaging – Acer OrbiCam (at the Acer web site listed here in my post there are two diffrent sets of driver combos.)
    Mice… - Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Modems – HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP
Network adapters – Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
    Processer – AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 (listed twice)
SD host adapters – SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller
Sound, video… - Realtek High Definition Audio

    Thanks in advance.

hoggie, I can not access that FTP Server. Thanks though. I'm in America, not sure if that would make a diffrence as for access to that server or driver/hardware match. Do you have another link? Anyone else got anything?

Same problem... I found that link a while ago. It didn't work then either, it helped me to ask for help on the forum in this thread.

Can anyone tell me how to figure out what chipset is installed on my computer?

The aspire 5050 is just an aspire 5100 with a 14.1"screen :) . The chipset your model uses is the ATI Xpress 1100. While "Up to 256MB ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 HyperMemory" means you have integrated graphics i.e the xpress 1100 integrated on the mainboard.

You can get the latest ATI catalyst driver suite for it by going to ATI's page here select your OS (vista 32) then integrated/motherboard and then choose the 1100. It will then take you to another page where you can download the latest catalyst driver suite download it and install it.

As for the drivers for your aspire 5050 the acer euro FTP sometimes gives trouble but the direct folder on the FTP for your model is found here. There you will find all of acer's latest drivers for vista and XP.

Thanks EVO, I found this out at dinner this evening while calling Acer Tech support for the third time. I got a guy to let me know what my chipset was. Acer does not support "clean installs" but I ask him if I had a right to know the parts in my computer and he agreed and looked it up for me. Now after wasting all day searching for drivers I have to figure out a time I can conduct the Clean install.

I will be mostly following this guys thread...
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144783

I'll post up my results when I get it done. Thanks to everyone who helped me today with finding the drivers I need.
