I am planning on buying a new laptop through newegg. I was looking at the 2012 WLMi, but noticed it was out of stock. Thats when I saw the Acer AS1681WLMI, it says it has the newer 715 dothan 1.5 cpu. Now is this the same as the 2012 but with a newer cpu?

    *UPDATE*
ok I found info on it. On the plus side it has the dothan and bluetooth. The negative is only 256 mb ram.

I am also wondering about this notebook, but have not been able to find very much info about it. I would particularly like to know about its size in relation to the 2012. I would really like to make up my mind and choose a model to buy, so any info would really be appreciated.

I recently recieved an email from Acer regarding 1681 WLMi memory replacemet. It sounds like both module locations are user friendly, hope this helps anyone.

Thank you for contacting Acer America. Both slots are available. When you
remove the memory cover you will see one slot but if you remove it, you
should see the other slot underneath; they are "stacked" modules. Below are
the specifications for the memory. As memory is user installable, adding it
does not void the warranty. I hope this is helpful.

    Memory controller Intel 855GME built-in
Memory size 0MB (no on-board memory)
    DIMM socket number 2 sockets
Supports memory size per socket 1024MB
Supports maximum memory size 2G (by two 1024MB SO-DIMM module)
Supports DIMM type DDR Synchronous DRAM
    Supports DIMM Speed 333 MHz
Supports DIMM voltage 2.5V and 1.25V
    Supports DIMM package 200-pin soDIMM
Memory module combinations You can install memory modules in any
    combinations as long as they
    match the above specifications.

    Excellent job Guiness!

I just receieved my 1681Wlmi from Newegg by Fedex today. My wife was home to recieve it but I won't get to play with it right away. I live in Orlando and that stupid storm Charley banged the heck out of my neighborhood. We probably won't have electricity for some time. I will bring it to work tomorrow and charge it up and add the extra stick of 512mb memory I already had to add to it. So I will report back on it tomorrow or Wednesday to let you know how it looks and feels.

Well, good news, bad news. The good news is the 1681Wlmi is a very nicely made system. Fit and finish are excellent. The quality of the screen is remarkable. One stuck on red pixel and otherwise gorgeous. Easily the brightest and sharpest and most evenly lit screen I have seen. Great keyboard. If I understand correctly the 2012Wlmi has a slightly curved keyboard? This one is not like that. Very straightforward, nice feel to the keys and a decent layout as well. The feature set is nice and I really like the placement of the various ports and the card reader. However, with all of the ports and such pretty much on the right side it could get a little crowded. The systems seems very nice and light and runs pretty cool even with extended use and gaming for an hour plus.

Now the bad news. No bluetooth onboard. There is no mention of it in device manager and the switch on the front of the unit to enable it just reports "no device" on the screen when you press it. The other thing that is quite disturbing, and pretty much a show stopper for me is that the battery can not possibly run the laptop for much more than two hours. On the plus sid ethe battery is light, very light. Well, back to the drawing board. On the plus side it came with 512mb memory (2 x 256mb).

Good luck on your continued quest.

Thats a bummer about the battery life, new egg says up to 5 hours. Maybe you got a defect battery or charger. Newegg also says that this model also has bluetooth. Do you have any bluetooth devices that you could try it on? And if it doesnt work I wonder if newegg would replace. Also is the screen size 15" or 15.4". When this model first appeared on newegg it was listed as 15" since then they have changed it to 15.4". Now I'm even more undecided on which notebook to buy either this one or the 2012wlmi.

    brochurelink: http://connect.acer-euro.com/ecss_papua/wr-resource/2101492183/upload/ent28/1/Acer%20Aspire%201681WLMi.pdf

sorry, but this one is in german but look for the following text:
16bit Sound Blaster Pro und MS Sound kompatibel, 2.1 Stereolautsprecher + Subwoofer

Is there a subwoofer indside or not ?

    many thanks

Sorry, I already shipped it back. The battery life was not a defect. If you look at the specs for the USA version of the 1681Wlmi it says clearly that it is a 4 cell 2.5 hour battery. That is the usual manufacturer's optimism talking. It is actually more like a 1.5 hour battery with any normal use. You might squeeze out 2 hours but that is pushing it.

As far as having a subwoofer, I can not be sure but I think it may have had one. The reason that I say this is that the sound was unusually clear and had good bass to it. I also looked inside the grill behind the keyboard and it looked like there was another speaker cone in there. I did not take the time to examine it that closely, much less take it apart to see for sure so this is just based on a cursory examination of the box. Hope that helps.

BTW, I also called Acer and confirmed that that is indeed the intended battery life.

    Hi!

I was just about to buy the AS1681WLMI from a US shop until I heard about the battery life. The strange thing is that you will get a 5-hour battery if bought in Europe.
I was thinking if it would be possible to buy a spare 5-hour battery from somewhere and replace the 1,5 hour battery your self???
