I have a 1 year old 5730Z, which has a terrible screen flickering problem. It seems to be the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the main unit, and wraps around the hinge area. Its been in once already for warranty repair, and then a month and a half or so after I got it back, it started doing the same thing all over again.

My main warranty ended a few weeks ago, but Acer claims that the repair warranty is no longer valid and it will be $220 to fix it. They claim its 60 days on the repair. Blah

My first experience with Acer, and its been mixed. Their support line has been decent, but the warranty folks have been difficult. Also, its a pretty mid market notebook, not particularly high end. But I expected a bit more than failure a week after the warranty expired.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? The machine has performed fine other than the monitor flaking out.

Is there an escalation process at Acer that anyone knows about?

$220 for a cable is very expensive. You could consider either some local service company or ebay purchase of a cable like this and DIY method.
Service manual would be helpful in making such a decision as you would be able to judge if you feel like disassembling and reassembling the laptop is sth you can do on your own.

Thanks... I'm fine doing the repair myself, fixed our old Tosh, Dell, and Thinkpads a bunch of times. Just wish that the Acer guys didn't punt so hard on the second repair. Pretty lame actually..... usually they take second repairs pretty seriously at most of these suppliers.
