Hi im brand new here and just recently discovered this site in search of a place that might be able to help me. i have a acer 5349-2592 im wanting to swap the intel celeron b800 out for a i7 2720qm i know the hm65 chipset will support that processor and that the i7 has a tdw of 45 10 higher than the celeron i believe overheating wont be an issue. can someone please give me some insight into this. ive tried numerous other forums and no one will even reply to my posts. thank you so much for your help

Can someone atleast tell me if its possible to just change the processor? Ive heard new laptops have integrated cpus does any one know anything about this???
-
Technically it's possible but I'm not sure if BIOS would detect your CPU properly.
-
i kinda figured that, is there a way around that ? would i have to find a bios from a different laptop with a similar chipset and cpu? or am i dead in the water? im just really tryin to not have to spend $1000 for another laptop when i could just spend $300-$400 to upgrade this one
-
No- you can't use BIOS from another laptop.
It may be possible to add microcode to BIOS but I'm not an expert in that field. -
so unless i can get someone to do it or teach me too im out of luck with my plan?
-
kizwan should be able to answer your question and possibly mod the BIOS if it's possible and required (assuming it's Phoenix BIOS)
-
ok one more question would the bios from another acer aspire work? AS5750-9422 | Product Model this one is identical to mine only difference is more ram bigger hdd and diff processor
i mean id just get a 2670qm instead of a 2720qm but would that do the trick -
No. Almost identical means different. Different BIOS means dead notebook.
There are cases where two models use the same BIOS (which means both share the same mobo) but in that case you'd be flashing the same thing. -
im sorry that im so undereducated about this. and thank you for all your help.!
but they both run the hm65 chipset isnt the hm65 the mobo? i mean every intel acer aspire on the site runs hm65 express chipset except some running the hm55 -
No. Chipset is only part of the mobo. Most notebooks that use Sandy Bridge CPUs also use HF which doesn't mean you can flash any BIOS on any notebook.

well dern im all out of questions. kinda flustured actually i mean you seem pretty knowledgeable do you think this is possible at all?

ok well i talked to acer via the chat session on the support website and they had this to say
Acer: Hi, my name is Acer. How may I help you?
Gerald : hi im gerald i couldnt select my aspire from the list its a 5349-2592
Gerald : im wanting to know if its possible to upgrade the processor on my aspire
Acer: It's okay, not a problem.
Acer: I understand your concern, I will provide you with the required information.
Gerald : im wanting to know if i can put an intel i7-2720qm i know the factory hm65 chipset will support it but is it possible?
Acer: I will let you know.
Acer: Gerald, may I place the chat on hold for 2 minutes, while I retrieve your computer records?
Gerald : no problem at all
Gerald : thank you
Acer: Thank you.
Acer: Thank you for being on hold.
Gerald : no problem
Acer: I really appreciate your time and patience.
Gerald : hey if you can tell me what i need to know i can wait all day
Acer: I will definitely let you know the required information, not to worry.
Acer: Gerald, I have verified that the Acer computer is covered under Standard Limited warranty.
Gerald : ok
Acer: I understand that you would like to know whether intel i7-2720qm processor is compatible with your computer or not. Am I correct?
Gerald : yeah
Gerald : like can i put the processor in and itll work ?
Gerald : or will the bios not support it
Acer: Thank you for the confirmation.
Acer: Gerald, as per our records I see that your computer shipped with Intel® Celeron® B800 processor.
Gerald Norton: yea
Gerald : the b800 is a low level sandy bridge and the i7 2720qm is a high level sandy bridge and the hm65 supports boths processors
Acer: As per the system specifications I see that your computer can support I7 processor.
Gerald : what do i have to do to get the i7 running on my laptop
Gerald : will it require a different bios?
Acer: However, Acer do not recommend to alter the factory shipped hardware especially the processor.
Gerald : i know itll void the warrenty
Acer: Since it may lead to system crash.
Acer: You need not update the BIOS to install the I7 processor.
Gerald : i can just plug it in and itll work?
Acer: Gerald, the default BIOS which was shipped with your computer can support the I7 processor.
Acer: Yes, you can directly plug in the I7 processor.
Acer: However, we cannot assure you the functionality.
Gerald : ok good is the i7 like soldered on the the motherboard
Gerald : i know you cant its fine
Gerald : i am fully aware that by changing the processor it will void acers warrenty
Gerald : i mean is the b800 soldered onto the mtoherboard
Gerald : im sorry
Acer: Gerald, please contact any local technician for any type of further assistance.
Acer: Since the I7 processor was never tested on your computer model, we do not have any records of it.
Acer: I apologize for the inconvenience.
Gerald : ok well can you tell me about the b800 connection to the motherboard
Gerald : ?
Gerald : is the factory b800 processer soldered onto the motherboard?
Acer: No.
Gerald : ok thats all i need to know thank you so very much
Acer: It was my pleasure to assist you, Gerald.
Gerald : you really really helped me alot
Gerald : thank you so much
Acer: You are welcome.
Acer: Gerald, to conclude we have provided you the required information and this should help you fix the issue. If there are no additional questions on this topic, I will close the chat session.
Gerald : sure can you have a good night
Acer: Thank you for contacting Acer live chat. My name is Acer and my badge number is XXXXXX.
