Most DVD drives these days are bay mounted meaning there is a screw in the bottom that you undo and then just push the drive out .

I had that dvd writed in my old Acer 3613wlmi. It was awful at burning anything, but it is not so much the writer, it is more to do with the fact that Acer only ship their laptops with one IDE channel, so you have the writer and hard drive sharing the same resource which makes burning slow and annoying. You might find you have the same problem buying a new DVD writer.

Have you tried updating firmware at all? latest one i can find is Here

    Hi,ok I've updated the firmware version...now I've lx48...the problem persist,but using nero(instead NTI)the DVD seems to work fine...
...It's too strange Acer don't test it's componets in order to avoid Hard/software incompatibilities??? Mah...

Today I will make another long test with different support, and I let you know

    Tnx all!

oem software usually sucks @ss. Nero 6 or 7 is great and it is the #1 peice of software I reccomend for windows.

Hope it keeps working fine for you.
