    Hi all,

just bought an Acer 5930 today and I really like it but I've got 2 problems with it..

    1) My touchpad isn't working.. all my keyboard shortcuts are working and when I press Fn+F7 it says touchpad enabled/disabled but the actual touchpad never works. I've installed the drivers for the touchpad from the website but no change.. any ideas?

    2) The hard disk is constantly working.. any idea what I can do to check?

    Thanks!

1.) try booting in SAFE MODE (press F8 when the ACER screen shows up, that should give you a boot menu)
once booted in safe mode... see if the touch pad is working... if not, then go to the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the CONTROL PANEL.... and remove the SYNAPTICS... when done shutdown the laptop and reboot.. and try to install the synaptics now that it has been fully removed...

2.) disable INDEXING by right clicking MY COMPUTER, then click MANAGE.....

then the first window should pop-up.... double click the grey item (see picture attached) SERVICES & APPLICATIONS... the window will change, now double click SERVICES,,,, and a new window will open.... go down the list to INDEXING SERVICE. double click it. a new window opens... click the STOP BUTTON,, then where it says STARTUP TYPE,,, change it to DISABLED.

that may help the hard drive

i agree,, you've done what you can.... now it's time to backup your important data... after doing that you could try to do a factory restore (acer is probably going to do it for you anyway, that's why i say make backups)

i have seen damaged windows files cause problems like this that have been resolved by a re-install of the OS. i admit it is not likely to fix the problem, but it's worth a try!!!

I have an Aspire 4530-5267 and the exact same problem. I had it for 3 days then sent it to the shop for repairs after trying everything I could think of. You can find out if its a hardware problem if you boot a Linux live cd and the touchpad doesn't work as it should. I recommend Ubuntu 7.10 as i've had problems ith 8.04. I tried that and the touchpad didn't work either, so I sent it for repairs and they blamed the bios upgrade I did the day before. But the problem appeared more than 24 hours after the upgrade! So I'd like to confirm my theory that it was a coincidence. Have you upgraded your bios recently?

if the touchpad worked fine after the BIOS flash, and then stopped working later... i don't see how the BIOS FLASH can be blamed for the problem.

sounds like they are just trying to deflect blame from their behind...

no I haven't upgraded anything - as soon as I switched on the laptop the first time I couldn't use the touchpad, had to put in an external mouse :(

**** it, was going back home for 2 weeks in 3 days and needed this laptop

from my screenshot - in the device manager should there be the touchpad listed under pointing device? does that mean windows isn't even recognising it?

so after the BIOS FLASH the TOUCHPAD never worked again?

if that is the case,, then you may wish to reflash the BOIS to the older version...

because if the touchpad NEVER worked after the BIOS FLASH.... then acer is correct... the latest BIOS has some conflict with your system causing the touchpad to become inactive

err no that was the other guy..

I didn't modify anything - the touchpad never worked from the time I opened the laptop lid the 1st time

so your touchpad never worked out of the BOX?

if that is the case... you either have a loose cable or a bad touchpad.

time to take back to the retailer if local and under the 14 or 30 day return deadline.

if bought on-line or out of the return period, then it's time to ship to acer.

those are your only choices as i see it

Actually it did work for a whole day after the upgrade, then it stopped working out of nowhere. I tried to reflash to the old version and it still didn't work. Maybe it had a bad solder or something and the heat was enough to let it loose. I'm trying to get it replaced, let's see how it works out.

you should have no problems getting that repaird by ACER if you can't get it replaced by the retailer...

if sending back to acer for repair.... remove any upgraded HARDWARE before sending back in..

also a good idea before taking back to the retailer,,
