So my friend liked my 3680 so much she asked me to find her one. Couldnt find a new 3680 anymore :( but did find a 4315-2682 for $379 at Microcenter!
    Here are the specs:

    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 540 1.86ghz
    512MB DDR2-667 RAM
    80GB 5,400RPM Hard Drive
    Combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW Drive
    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    10/100 Network
    802.11b/g Wireless Network
    14.1" WXGA CrystalBrite Display
    Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic

The first thing I made her buy was 2gb of pc5300 RAM ($22.99 for each gb   ). It only came with 512mb (typical Acer budget lappy, right). We brought it home and she went through the typical Vista setup, I made sure she watched how slow and laggy it was BEFORE I upgraded the RAM. Then I rebooted and let her see the difference with the 2gb RAM.

Krazyphire- the processor is SOOO easy to get to in the 4315. Theres 1 huge cover on the bottom that covers the HD, RAM and processor. All very easily accessible. Why cant the 3680 be like that? Lol. I also told her that we should order a 7200RPM HD for it. Acer put a hitachi 8mb cache 5400 RPM drive in the 4315. Funny because they put a Western Digital in mine...hmm must've been the best price at the time for manufacturing...

So besides bragging about what a nice laptop it is, and how surprisingly faster the 1.86ghz Celeron is compared to my old 1.6 Celeron, I was wondering what Core 2 Duo processor can I use in this new laptop? It has the GL960 chipset. Can I use a T5300 Core 2 Duo like I did in my 3680?

I will stay away from 667 FSB as I have tried a Core Duo and a Core2 Duo, both with 667 FSB, and it won't boot.
I have just ordered a T5200 with 533 FSB. Will let you know how it turn out.

Well, I got the Core2 T5200 but ran into the same problem as before. It just won't boot.
The power recycled for 3 or 4 times then stop. Nothing displayed on the screen.

I put Celeron back and it fired up again. I am stuck for now.

tmtang you got it all wrong

if you have a 4315 with a gl960, then it will only work with a socket P

the t5200 is a different socket

i am willing to bet that the processors you have tried were not socket P

also, there is no core duo that is socket p to my knowledge

    Hello Nunuxx,

You are right I found that out the hard way, but I was in luck as I found a desktop board with socket M for on $70 at Micro Center and now I have a very quiet Core2 desktop running Vista.
I am thinking of T2310 for the laptop upgrade. Do you think it do able?
    ClubIT has it for $69.

    Thanks,

I updated the bios to 1.8 from the FTP site then dropped in Core2 t7100 and now I have a 4315 Core2 Duo T7100 system with chipset now read 965 instead of 960. It is now a fast one.
    I found T7100 on Ebay for $99.

The T7100 is in !!! works perfect! This laptop flies now. The vid card does still hold it back on Call of Duty 4, but that is expected. Best bang for the buck laptop. =D

    Acer 4315 $389
    2GB DDR2 $65
    + T7100 1.8 $73
    --------------------
$527 out the door after shipping and all taxes

Now faster than most laptops that cost $1000.

i've been looking everywhere for info on the processor upgrade for this thing! i got mine for $350 from microcenter, intel's chipset id tool identifies it as a gm965, so i assumed i could throw a t7100 in it... you guys proved me right in that regard -- but i still have another question...

should i throw in 667 ram instead of 533 once i perform the upgrade?

i know on older machines pc133 would work at pc100 if the board didn't support it, is that still the case?

    Hello,

I just bought this notebook and wanted to know, if it supports 3 or 4 GB of RAM? I read that somebody installed 3GB and it worked. Furthermore I need to know where I can find the BIOS-Upgrade you talked about in this thread, because I dont find anything on the acer-homepage.

    Thanks!

yes it will take 2 X 1gig ram modules,,, vista should work on your system,, but it will be SLOW even with 2 or 3 gigs of ram,

you might consider a CPU upgrade,, i think they are relatively easy to do on that model

the CPU SOCKET,,, when you take the large pannel off the bottom of the laptop, (where you upgrade the RAM) chances are you will see a long metal (coper) pipe-like thing...

look under the pipe at the point where it has the 4 screws holding it down...
what color is your sock there??

    cream colored?
    purpleish?
    grey?

check and get back w/ me

also XP should run much better than Vista under your current configuration

    see that thread

    michacerboy upgraded a 4315 to a T5450 w/ no problems... so based on that i feel 100% confident a T5550 will work...

how cheap is the T5550?? they should be cheap on EBAY... and i'd not buy a retail T5550... you can get a T7300 on ebay for just over $100us

i'm betting your RAM is officially limited to 2 gigs... but we have found that many ACERS based on the i960 will support 3 gigs... BUT 4 GIGS IS A NO GO.

all you have to do to update the CPU is remove the old one from the socket, and then drop in the new one... reassemble the parts... and boot up and follow the instructions on the WINDOWS SCREEN (i think it will ask you to reboot after finding NEW HARDWARE *the CPU*)

    yes SOCKET P,,

HDD upgrade is easy to do... buy a USB EXTERNAL HDD ENCLOSURE,,, and use ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE to CLONE the old drive to the new one... unless you want to start with a fresh install:::: SATA I or II should work fine.

no chance of upgrading the VIDEO... sorry

the second set of #s refer to the system configuration, such as CPU, RAM, HDD and other options installed..

to figure out if you have a 2963,, what i would do id GOOGLE ASPIRE 4315-2963 and see if your installled hardware matches EXACTLY the hardware advertised for the 2963...

that will tell you if it is or is not a 2963

all 5315's can use 3 gigs of ram, but the 2gig stick must be in a specific slot, (i can't recall if it's the lower slot near the MB, or the outer slot near the plastic case)... just use trial and error,,, if you get BLUE SCREEN errors,,, then switch the placement of the RAM sticks...

    i don't think the 4315 uses a socket M,,

i'm 99.9% sure it is a SOCKET P based motherboard... and the T7200 CPU is a socket M cpu... so your choice of CPUs is not going to work in your laptop.

the T8300 cpu is much more powerful, will generate a bit less heat and have slightly better battery life.

as for the difference in socketM and socketP are both FEW and MANY... they have the same number of pins but the pins are slightly different so you can't physically put a socketM cpu into a socketP motherboard and vise versa... the socket P CPUs are based on newer technology, so are newer, have more features, use less power, and generate less heat as a general rule.

for more info about CPUs use google or wikki to look for info. also INTEL.COM has quite a bit of tech info,, but it just goes over my head usually ;)

    Thx for quick response

so it means 4315 have socket P and not compatible with the socket M (T7200) there are something make me confused about everest and CPU-Z

pls feel free to see the pict (I am sorry if the pict its too large/small)

    CPU-Z
    [IMG]

    Everest
    [IMG]

in CPUZ it said that socket is 479mPGA and the other hand in everest said it just 479 so I thougt that socket is socket M...CMIIW
why the code name is different (Conroe-L and Merom-L) in both software..

what dou you think about T7500 is it posible compatible with AS4315

thank you very much for your attention

trust me,, i bought 2 CPUs before i caught on to the real clues... the socket m and socket P are both forms (different forms) of the much older 479 socket...

see the CHIPSET INFO in everest where it says INTEL GL960?? well 960/965 chipsets only accept SOCKET P cpus... i took enough of a hit in the wallet to know...

and yes the T7500 will work perfectly in the ASPIRE 4315,, but i would consider a T8100 or T8300... they should be priced similarly to a T7500,, but are based on even newer technology and will be a slight bit better,,, but i'd gladly take a T7500 anyday if the price were right!!!

to use a SOCKET M cpu your motherboard must be based on the INTEL 940/943/or 945 chipset... since yours is clearly an INTEL 960 you MUST use a SOCKET P cpu...

this link has CPUs divided by socket type,,, that should help guide you in choosing a SOCKETP CPU.... ANY SOCKET P CPU will work as long as it a T model and not the NEWER P models which are the new Montevina platform that will not work with INTEL 960/965 chipsets...

you should be able to use just about any Socket P processor including any in the following list...

    CPU TYPE...MODEL...SPEED...L2CACHE...FSB
    Core 2 Duo T5250 1500 2048 667
    Core 2 Duo T5450 1667 2048 667
    Core 2 Duo T5550 1833 2048 667
    Core 2 Duo T5750 2000 2048 667
    Core 2 Duo T5850 2133 2048 667

    Core 2 Duo T5270 1400 2048 800
    Core 2 Duo T5470 1600 2048 800
    Core 2 Duo T7100 1800 2048 800
    Core 2 Duo T7250 2000 2048 800

    Core 2 Duo T7300 2000 4096 800
    Core 2 Duo T7500 2200 4096 800
    Core 2 Duo T7700 2400 4096 800
    Core 2 Duo T7800 2600 4096 800

    Core 2 Duo T8100 2100 3072 800
    Core 2 Duo T8300 2400 3072 800

    Core 2 Duo T9300 2500 6144 800
    Core 2 Duo T9500 2600 6144 800

there are also many slower CPUs such as core duo and celeorn M,, but right now the T7300, T8300 or T9300 are the best CPUs for the money...

here is another link that might help explain the above #s and help you understand things a bit more clearly... LITHUS's CPU GUIDE

or if you want to just make it easy order the T7500 or a T8300...
you will be fine that way... i'm sure of it..

the problem with using hardware detection software is the fact that the software is only as good as the authors, and it must be updated constantly... not to mention that the authors cannot test thier code on every possible hardware combination... and those programs are generally written with the DESKTOP users in mind.

just trust me here,, ACER CPU UPGRADES is my area of expertise now...
see this link it even has a VIDEO of lostboykev upgrading his 4315's CPU

if you notice the T5750 kev uses in the video is a SOCKET P which is in the list above

    Ok thanks very much... :)

but I want make same perception here..
    based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_P said

The Intel Socket P is the mobile processor socket replacement for the new Intel Core 2 chips. It has an 800 or 1066 MT/s FSB, that can be switched 'on the fly' to 400MT/s to save power. It launched on May 9, 2007, as part of the Santa Rosa platform. Socket P has 478 pins, but is not pin-compatible with Socket M or Socket 478. Socket P is also known as a 478-pin Micro FCPGA or μFCPGA-478.

    so I browsing to http://processorfinder.intel.com/Li...2848,826,942,58,3008,&ProcFam=2643&SearchKey=

so in the pict decribe that T7200 is part of socket P (FCPGA) processor
so which one is right..wikipedia or intel..

thanks very much again .. :D

    FCPGA does not indicate SOCKETP

it is an acronym that stands for

    F.... flip
    C.... chip
    P.... pin
    G.... grid
    A.... array

all socket 479, socket m, socket P and many others are FCPGA
if i recall correctly the first FCPGA cpu was the socket 370 celerons based on the Pentium III.

so in reality both are right and wrong...
here is wiki's defination of FCPGA

the chipset is the easy way to tell which socket style CPU you need...

and an easy way to tell socket P CPUs from socket M cpus is this...
notice the "eSpec#" (the first # listed in the intel chart??)

well all socket P cpus have an eSpec# starting in "SLA"
while all socket M cpus have eSpec# that start with either "SL8" or "SL9"

to verify the socket type try to find an add on EBAY describing the T7200 as a SOCKET P chip... if you do it is a typeo!...

then try to find a T7500 and check it's socket type....
it's taken me months in the upgrade game to figure all this out... (i knew the FCPGA from my old days working as a PC TECH) the FCPGA celerons were the first CPUs i saw packaged on the green fiberglass type board, all previous CPUs were totally encased in either silicon or the black plastic that was introduced with the pentium 1- 200Mhz W/ MMX.

when it comes to intel CPUs i have a nice long history, going back to an old 286 @ 8 Mhz....

Thank you for your nice explanation now I learned something from you :D.

Do you have any idea about who sell the core2Duo in Indonesia (Jakarta city) because in here is quiet hardly to buy procecor exclude ebay I dont really know about the procedure of buy and sell in ebay

so any info and favor is very highly appreciated

    thanks :)

    Hi, Bigozone,

I bought a used T5550 c2d. I dropped it in the computer, it won't boot up. But, if i put the M540 back in. It worked perfect. I tried version 1.08 & 1.13 bios, acted the same.

You think that's a dead cpu or wrong type.

Btw, I installed 3 gigs of ram, it worked fine.

    Any suggestion, thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Striker888
