I have heard from many friends who have bought the 15 inch version that they are very satisfied with it. Not too loud but still a small powerhouse
-
I saw the 15" yesterday at the supermarket. Touched it, and felt the build quality, seen the display...
It impressed me. My toughts about it were confirmed.
Going to buy it... -
-
I'm maybe considering the 17 inch version, has anyone experienced throttling on it ?
-
Any guidance on how to get Windows 7 installed on this machine? Specifcally, where to find the drivers?

I heard you can not undervolt this haswell i7.
You can only under lock but its the same if you put in power option to normal usage from performance.
Example: if the CPU at 3.4 ghz is at 1.1, you can not choose to lower to 1.05v etc... Same for other frequency. This will not be apply.
Can you tell me if its right ? -
Has anyone brought one of the new 4k versions? Wanted to know how the screen looks and does any1 know if any of the WiFi problems etc have been sorted in the newer models
-
Cache and iGPU also undervolted. Runs nice and cool in my 78f roomppn7 likes this. -
Hello,
I can’t decide between the Acer Aspire V Nitro Black Edition and the Asus G551JM.
Link for Acer
Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-591G-74LK Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 - Newegg.com
Link for Asus
Both Laptops have the same hardware, the only difference is that the Asus G551JM has 16GB of ram and 1TB 7200RPM in comparison to the Acer V Nitro it only has 8GB of ram and 1TB 5400RPM with better screen quality.
I was more in the Acer side not only of the great review from notebookcheck.net and other places but also of the slim design and because it has better cooling system.
I was also thinking of installing a 128 M.2 SSD to the Acer but I'm not sure which one should I get...
in terms of spec the Asus is winning for 100$ more but I'm not sure.
I would be appreciated if someone can give me any advice. -
I mean you have to change every frequency voltage ?
Is there any tutorial ?
Th screenshot shows that you put -86mv every frequency ? -

Here's the Acer 17" version with 256ssd+1tb hdd and 18gb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._re=Acer_black_edition-_-34-314-702-_-Product
Personally I chose the Acer after reading both product reviews from Newegg, Amazon, NC...
The different several problems with the Asus just seemed too much. Screen, keys, heat.
The Acer just had one common problem in all reviews: WiFi.
And it was just solved by getting a new $39 WiFi card.
The Asus screen problem it's not that easy to solve.
Besides, Acer is ips vs TN panel on Asus.
The ssd+HDD combo is a deal breaker for me.
Sleek design vs bulky.
Just think of your needs, and then make a decision based on that. -
Could the touchpad complaints just be the touch delay setting in Windows 8? Go to Start, type 'touch' and pick the 'Mouse and touchpad settings'. Change the Touchpad to 'Short delay' or 'No delay' and see if that helps.
I don't have a Nitro V but I ordered one for my wife for Christmas so I've been reading up here. I want to know if I'm going to be in for some complaints if there are touchpad issues. -
I pulled the trigger and bought the v17 VN7-791G-73AW from newegg. I could not figure out the difference between VN7-791G-73AW and VN7-791G-77JJ. I even did a compare on Acer's site and it shows no difference between the 2 models. But the VN7-791G-73AW is on sales for $1129 which is about $200 cheaper than anywhere else.
I was deciding between this and the Lenovo Y70. The Y70 has touchscreen but no HDD and no optical drive. But even without the HDD and optical drive, the Y70 is almost 1lb heavier than the v17 which is really strange. Anyway, I think I could live without the touch screen. -

I just figured out, that you guys from USA can already purchase the HP Omen for a bit more bucks...
Here in Italy will be available for the end of the year.
Why I never saw you tanking about it?
I think it's a great machine with very similar specs... -

How is the cooling on this laptop, so many people say different things. I have an option to get a vn7-591g-590d which has a i5 4210h 8gb ram, 128 ssd with 500hdd and gtx 860m 2gb for 850 euros this is really cheap so I ordered it. But how will the temperatures be playing cs go and league of legends and civ 5? Thanks in advance.
PS I had an y50 but it had a motherboard problem, but when I played civ 5 for hours and lol the keyboard got hot but the cpu was still quite cool at 65-75 degrees, will there 591 get near there temps?Last edited: Dec 3, 2014 -
Can I use the Crucial M550 256GB M.2 SSD - CT256M550SSD4 as a boot device ?
-
Runs nice and cool and perfectly stable under load for me. Your results may vary. -
You also underclocked the turbo from 3.5 to 2.8ghz.
Did you tried to let him maximum 3.5ghz and undervolt then ? -
-
The i5 still most probably be a bit cooler, but not much. Remember, he also has a TDP of 47W. -
-
I gonna try when I get my Laptop from acer support... Which was defect. -
You can set maximum processor state to 99% (i7) (Balanced) and proc goes till 2.45GHz (temp till 80-81 C GTA IV) (Notepal is off)
You can play when someone sleep in the room.... is quiet.... (Sry for my broken eng.) -
Hi guys and gals,
I just got my V17 from Newegg and so far it is awesome (full review to follow)! I went with the the VN7-791G-73AW over the VN7-791G-77JJ. Like many on here I could find no difference between the two other than the 73AW version was more expensive on Acer's own website. I can confirm now that I have it in hand that is is identical to the 77JJ model - as far as I can tell, if I find any differences I will post them as I find them. I got it for $1119.00 shipped and it seems like an amazing deal! -
Can't wait for mine to get here :-(

Hey everyone, I have some rather specific questions for the owners.
First of all, does anyone own the i7-ULV version? Meaning, the non-black edition. I would assume that besides the processor and graphics card, all other components are the same, but I'd like to make sure.
It is my understanding that the touchpad in this laptop is a Synpatics one, is this correct? Or does that vary sometimes?
Lastly, what kind of customization can be done to the touchpad? Meaning, can you control the function of two/three finger tap? Two/three finger swipe? Namely, in my current laptop, which has an ELAN touchpad, I set it up in such a way that:
- Two-finger tap is menu
- Three-finger tap emulates a middle-button clic
- Two-finger swipe is for scrolling (reversed and inertial)
- Three-finger swipe left or right functions as a back/forward button (think in Chrome for example)
- Three-finger swipe up closes current window
- Three-finger swipe down shows the desktop
Like I said, I'm being very specific because I'd like to know to what extent could the touchpad be adjusted to what I'm used to.
On a slightly different but still related note, I noticed that the non-black version is very similar to the Aspire V5 (see German Amazon here), except the V5 has an 850m, albeit with DDR3 memory. I think I might give that V5 a try, since I don't game that much, but any input is appreciated. -
Ok, so for anyone who's thinking about installing Windows 7, here's what I did:
- First, you'll have to get into the BIOS of the system and change the boot system to "legacy" instead of UEFI (at least that's what I did, so I could get my bootable USB to run)
-Once you've changed that setting you'll need to change the boot order in the BIOS to make sure that the USB boots first, before the hard drive (I didn't need to do this step because I took out the original hard drive and replaced it with a faster 7200rpm drive, and that didn't have an OS installed on it, so it wouldn't boot up anyways)
-Turn off the laptop
-Plug in your bootable USB that has the Windows 7 ISO on it
-Turn the laptop back on
-Laptop should detect the usb and begin to load Windows
-Follow instructions and install Windows 7
-That's pretty much it....Once it's installed you'll need all the appropriate drivers so that everything functions properly...Here is what I used for the drivers:
Bluetooth Driver (atheros) --> Acer Website
Card Reader (realtek) --> Acer Website
Chipset (Intel) --> Acer Website
VGA (Intel) --> Acer Website
VGA (Nvidia) --> Acer Website
Wireless LAN (Atheros)--> Acer Website (Same insallation file as the bluetooth, so you can use either file, both bluetooth and wifi are installed at the same time, with a single file)
Intel Usb 3.0 functiionality --> https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=22824
Ethernet/LAN --> Realtek
Intel AMT driver --> the driver from the Acer website kept giving me an error, when I would try and run it, I'm going to try and find the driver from Intel's website and see if that works
Synaptics Driver --> This driver from Acer's website also didn't work, So I'm going to try and find a driver for this from the Synaptics website...although the touchpad still functions without it
Other than the two drivers I just mentioned, everything else installed perfectly...and everything seems to be functioning fine so far.
Also, there was no driver on the Acer website for the webcam...is there a driver available/needed for the webcam?
Also, I haven't checked but in order the have the hotkeys functioning, I will need to download and install the Acer Launch Manager Application, right? -
Hi all!
It is my first message here, I read most (if not all) this thread before deciding which laptop I should get as this acer aspire v nitro was among my options... And yesterday finally i got it! so I wanted to share my impressions with you, it may be helpful for some
First of all, my model is the 15'6 inch Black Edition, I bought it here in Spain so features may differ with version for other countries (I7 4710HQ, 16Gb RAM, 1TB HDD+256Gb SDD, GTX 860M, Full HD "IPS?")
While readind many posts on this thread about problems with the Wifi and the touchpad i was a bit scared, also for the screen quality. But I have to tell you I have no wifi problems, signal is very good and constant, better than my previous 4-5 year old laptop.
About the touchpad, I cannot compare with any other modern laptop, but compared with my previous pc which still had the two physical mouse buttons on the touchpad and had no "multi gesture" functions, this one is quite nice, still I can feel it is sometimes hard to press and the precission could be better, but anyway, who is going to use the touchpad in a normal basis?
Sound quality: It just sounds great to me!! I always have music on and watched a movie yesterday and the sound is clean and quite deep, really nice. Of course, the speakers are under the base so it may depend on where you have your computer, but on any plane surface should be alright.
Speed: Well, this may be the biggest difference for me, on my previous Win. 7 laptop I had to wait for some minutes until I everything loaded and I could start using the PC, this is mind blowing fast for me, it takes around 5 seconds until you get to the desktop screen, of course thanks to the SSD, and well starting softwares is also really fast.
Screen: this could be the only minus I found... while my old pc was not great... it did have a great screen (Sony Vaio S series). Resolution and size is the same, full HD, but i feel in the acer the pixels are more "visible"... i dont know how to explain it, the sony felt somehow more homogeneus, another minus for the screen, on the sony, image colors and lightness were really constant at any angle, while in the Acer I can feel the loss of some light when at certain angles, but nothing really to worry about i guess, maybe was just that the screen on the Sony was really good even for today standards... cannot assure it is IPS, somebody knows how can I know this?
Appearance: What canI tell about appearance? it is something personal but for me it looks really really nice and classy, even with the red lights on. Quality feels really good as well, it is all plastic but quality feeling is superb, and the feel of the surfaces is reallly confortable, but you will have to make some cleaning every now and then as you will se every dust particle and some fingerprints on the full black surfaces...more to do with the color itself than with material finish.
Gaming: I know this is a gaming laptop (not hardcore gaming but it has some nice hardware) but I am not a real gamer... so I cant tell you how it performs, but I can tell you it works perfect with 3D modeling softwares which is what I am going to use it for together with Photoshop and other stuff.
Heat and noise: I know heat is another important concern for many people, also for me, and while it gets warm-hot it is not a problem, but lets wait until I have to work on more heavy stuff, but for now for a laptop this compact and with this powerful hardware inside I think it is more than positive!. A good thing is the heat exhausts location, it is very well designed as it throws the heat from the two fans directly to the back and the exhausts are always open, not like other laptops where you cover part of the exhaust with the screen and cooling is not so good. And last but not least, the laptop is really silent, I could not hear any noise at all, any noiesa at home or in the street is bigger than what the laptop produces, of course, lets wait until I work on heavy stuff that require more from the laptop, but anyway I dont think it is going to be uncomfortably loud.
Well, hope you find it useful or interesting at least, if you have any doubt I can help you on, tell me, meanwhile I will continue enjoying my new Acer, looks like the best thing I could buy for the price!CJM0929 likes this. -

Received my VN7-791G-73AW from Newegg last week thanks to Shoprunner free 2 days shipping. The V17 is bigger than I thought. The materials feel very nice and solid. I wish the headphone jack would be on the left side. The right side is already very crowded with power plug, hdmi, and usb for mouse. I have nothing plug in on the left side.
This is the first laptop I have with SSD and I am loving it. It is so freaking fast loading things. I bought Skyrim Legendary and installed it to play. It auto detect the 860m and set it to Ultra High graphic settings. Everything runs really smooth and really sharp. In between loading one area to another, Skyrim would display a page with a couple of lines of words for you to read while waiting. So far I have not manage to read more than 5 words before the loading was done and page was gone!
The screen is really nice comparing to my old laptop. With my HP Envy 17, I have to set it to max brightness even though I am 8 feet from the windows. I set up the Acer V17 right by the window and I have it at about 60% brightness. The anti glare works really well.. there is really no glare. My HP has a glossy screen and the glare could get really annoying.
It is a really solid laptop and great price too.estiar and Daft Paolo like this. -
I have had the VN7 591 590D which is the aspire v 15 nitro. So far im so impressed. It has 500gb hdd gtx 860m 2gb 8gb ram 128 gb ssd i5 4210h, and so far is has been brilliant. Its quick and a great display. When I played league of legends it could easily go past 200 fps not like that much matters, also there is no screen tearing at all in games, and when I was playing league of legends the temperature only got to 65 degrees. It averaged about 55 degrees when playing LoL for 40 min, thats better than my old y50 which I returned. The noise in this laptop is amazing when ur under 60 degrees u litreally cannot here the fan. I was playing lol and it made such a slight noise not like that matters anyway. Also in idle there is no noise or browsing, and when browsing and watching hd videos the temperature did not go above 60. It was around 43-55 normally. Very happy so far. If I were to complain about something it would be the trackpad maybe, altho its decent and thats about it. I love the keyboard btw there is no flex, no complaint really so far. Btw this laptop costed me 850 euros, so im not going to mention anything about the design.

Hi all, been monitoring this thread for some time and took the plunge last week, opting for the only black edition 15 inch that is available in the UK: the 591-79KK. Overall I'm happy with the laptop. I have no issues with the screen (I love it), it's powerful and looks very nice.
I, like others, have unfortunately had real problems with the atheros wifi module. My house is not big, but upstairs I was getting 10x slower download speeds than I was downstairs, which is - frankly - unacceptable. I have bought an intel ac 7260 card and fitted it today (very fiddly job I thought). I will post again to let everyone know how it is working and whether it has improved the speeds away from the router. -
should i buy this version:
https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/produc...l-core-i7-4710hq-16gb-win-81-notebook-2756151
its the 4k version and i will turn the desktop resolution to 1080 and i wont play games on higher than 1080. If i do this, will the laptop act as a 1080p laptop or will i have issues?
thanks for the help -

I just installed the Intel 7260NGW wireless card into my 591. Of course giving the Atheros a final test for a before and after benchmark yielded some of the best performance I've seen out of it, the new AC wireless card definitely trumps it. Going to the opposite end of my house yields upload and download speeds that were faster than sitting right next to the router previously. The only strange thing I've notice is that latency has actually gotten worse with the new car. Before I would consistently see pings to my ISP around 9 ms, and now they're around 23 ms. No idea why this would be, but overall it was $30 well spent and a straight forward installation.
