The electrical noise may be coil whine, it often happens on desktop components (especially graphics cards) and it seems the problem extends to powerful notebooks, not sure if this a new though (my laptop, very likely the graphics card, make a strange whine under load too). Even my power adapter whine slightly, for almost 2 years, with no problems.
It can be annoying but it won't harm your pc.

In Linux I get a pop when audio starts and a pop when I stop my audio app. I believe this is due to (my) enabling power saving for the audio card in Linux. I assume Windows does some fancy dance to power up the card quietly or maybe it just doesn't ever power it down.

I don't hear any noise (other than whatever music I'm playing) once the card powers up. It sounds to me like you are hearing the power up 'pop' and then once the card is powered up you are getting interference from something.

Might be some useful info in the link inside this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lin...ware/737869-loud-popping-noise-shut-down.html

What tool do you use / how do you enable powersave for audio (and usb channel,
    as you mentioned previously)?

Powertop It has a "tunables" tab that shows you stuff you can toggle to enable power saving. Typically it's a command like 'echo auto > /sys/somedevice/power_save'. You can give Powertop a flag at startup that writes all the commands it thinks you could run to enable power save to a file. I copied those to a file that I run by hand as root.

    echo 5 > /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode
    #iw dev wlan0 set power_save on
    echo '1' > '/sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save';
    echo 'min_power' > '/sys/class/scsi_host/host4/link_power_management_policy';
    echo 'min_power' > '/sys/class/scsi_host/host5/link_power_management_policy';
    echo 'min_power' > '/sys/class/scsi_host/host2/link_power_management_policy';

    echo 'min_power' > '/sys/class/scsi_host/host1/link_power_management_policy';
    echo '1500' > '/proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs';
    echo 'min_power' > '/sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy';

I had to comment out a few of them that did power save on the mouse pad, my external mouse and the wireless card. For the mice, power save makes them lag when you first move them (or worse they hang for like 5 seconds every 30 seconds) and power save isn't supported for the wireless card.

I will point out this is a very manual way to do it. I'm guessing Ubuntu, Arch, etc have ways of doing this in a more automated way.

    hey,
my acer vn7-791G is 4 months old. since the beginning i wondered if it has one or two built in microphones? In the user manual stands, that the two small openings on the front are "microphones" and under the description is written: "internal stereo microphone for sound recording".
So my question: is in the vn7-791G one microphone or two microphones? besides: i've the feeling that only the right opening is actualy recording sth..

Joedo, VN7-791G has only one microphone. Placeholder for the second one is empty. Look at the photo from Notebookcheck.net review. Little green board at the bottom of this photo is the microphone.

Thanks, I already installed powertop but forgot about it, because I was busy
to figure out how to switch off the nvidia chip with the bbswitch kernel module,
that's part of the "bumblebee" package.
That saves 8-10W, as opposed to the nvidia "tunable" setting in powertop, which changes
nothing for me. But powertop saves another couple Watt and Kelvin cpu core temp.
Didn't have the problem with wifi, after changing the powertop setting gnome showed
"airplane mode". But it didn't work for bluetooth. So I did rmmod btusb, don't need
    it yet anyway.

But I couldn't figure out what's the flag you mention. Looked everywhere.
    Seems to be undocumented?
Anyway, thanks to the fine Intel folks, the lap is useable with Linux,
left alone with Acer, one would be screwed. According to Acer, this
is "specifically constructed for Win 8". LOL.

    ---

Regarding electronic noise, the high pitch beeping when suspended
seems to be ubiquitous with the Nitro series.
I also recognize a certain buzzing if I use my usb mouse while on
    battery.

Hi guys! I'm having hard time deciding if buying an i7 version worth the money compared to the i5 one...

The heaviest task that I would ask to my laptop would be playing video games...

    What do you think?

    Thanks!!!

    @Daft Paolo

Core i7 will be better regardless of the task and if you can afford it, buy it. That said version with Core i5 is very competitively priced, offers good performance and seemingly suffers less from thermal throttling.

Ultimately it's more about the money than anything else.

The --html or --csv flag will do it. In the filename you supply, you'll get a section called "Software Settings in Need of Tuning". With all the settings in the file I pasted earlier, enabled, it shaves off another 2-3W, (which gets me from 3:00hr to about 3:30hr battery) but yes the Nvidia is like 6W idle for me when it's on, so bbswitch is critical.

For the Nvidia card I just installed bbswitch and added "echo OFF > /proc/acpi/bbswitch" to my local.start. I tried bumblebee but it requires a login manager (XDM, GDM) which I don't use and didn't want to mess with. There are hacks to get around that but I didn't feel like messing with those either.

I only use the Nvidia card for Blender 3D, and as it turns out, I now have a setup that's even better than I had planned for. I have the CUDA toolkit installed, so Blender uses the Nvidia card to render (after I turn the card on) and uses the Intel card for the editing UI. Nice!

I got a new behavior with the Wifi.
It was working perfectly well, but since I reinstalled windows (I changed the SSD, and got a student MSDN copy from my years as a student, so I wanted to have a clean install) the wifi connexion is dropping after a few seconds.

    1. I connect to the network (5m away), great reception, great speed
    2. Few seconds after that, pings stop. I can't even connect to the router. But reception is still perfect.
    3. Disc/Reconnect, same thing.

So I have a feeling this is completely driver driven, but despite installing the Atheros drivers provided on Acer website, I still have this problem.

Anyone tried making a recovery USB flash drive? When I tried to create one, it tells me to get an USB flash drive 16GB in size. So I went and bought a 16GB flash drive. Turns out it really needs to have 16GB.. and I don't think any "16GB" USB key has more than 15GB. Now I have to think if I really want to spend the money to get the 32GB flash drive to use as a backup recovery....

I created the recovery on a 16gb flash drive without any problem, weird.

Note ; It's a shame that Acer Softwares are not available on their website ...

When I plug it in, the button is grey out. I saw that the drive is there under file manager and everything seems fine. The only thing I could detect why the button is inactive is probably because the available space on the drive is 14.5 GB. The text says "the drive has to have at least 16GB space..." I guess I could try again and see if it was just a glitch.

Hello everyone, I'm typing this from my new Acer Aspire V Nitro, the 900$ one (i7, n860m,8gb ram, IPS) . I'm planning to install later the SSD M.2. The computer is working just fine, the wireless, the keyboard no problem so far... The only things that bothers me a little is the touch-pad, IMO it doesn't feel soft and it feels a little cheap.. the computer started with a lot of bloatware, but I can fix that.. The computer is very slim, I was impressed, I thought it would be bigger. I haven't tried any kind of games or heavier programs yet, but I will. The other thing is, I don't know if its only my computer but the lower right side in top of the stickers very near to the arrow keys it feels

"warm every single time, is that normal or just my computer? "

I would appreciate any advice please.

I've noticed that area gets warm when the Nvidia card is running. I have it off almost all the time so I don't know how hot it gets. I haven't played any games with it or anything.

Coming back with new Wifi tests.
I'm now in my family house, with 4 floors (Ground floor + 3 floors). The router, a good Netgear one (don't remember the ref, but a really good one, with good reviews, 100€++), is on the 1st floor. I'm now testing the wifi on the 3rd floor (old house, stone built) and everything it working perfectly. I got a really good signal and connection, as good as the one I had with my desktop and it's wifi card with 2 antennas.

So in the end it seems the wifi problems are not such a big deal. They may also be linked to poor routers.

Hi, I finally got Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition, but i am worried about joints. Joint on the right doesnt fit like the one on the left. I dont know if it is worth to return the notebook to a store or not.

Hello guys this is my first post on this forum.
I have bought the Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition from France (VN7-791G-71R3) for 1090 euros (1335$), which is a bargain considering the specs:
    -CPU: Intel I7-4710HQ 2.5GHz-3.5GHz
    -GPU: NVidia GTX860M 2GB DDR5
-RAM: 16GB DDR3 with 800 MHz speed, which is a bit disappointing considering the availability of 1066 MHz
    -SSHDD: 256GB + 1TB
    -ODD: Blu-Ray
So I decided to share with you my experience with this laptop and give you a quick review.
Display: It is an IPS panel and a really Great one but it pales compered to the screen of my brother's ASUS N56 when it comes to brightness and color precision and reproduction.
Sound: Honestly, a sublime sound quality, and when paired with the screen it gives a complete experience for movie enthusiast as myself, not to forget the audiophiles and videophiles.
System: Speed is the right word to describe it thanks to the SSD.
Keyboard: It is an adequate one, nothing special about it.
Track pad/Touchpad: After reading the whole thread I was terrified that it will be that Bad to an extent of not being usable, but it is not. Yes, sometimes it stops responding or hangs for a few seconds but that happened one time through the 10 days and for about 20 seconds then everything went back to normal. It is on the low grade middle end scale, it doesn't have a smooth surface on which you can freely swipe your fingers or use all the gestures easily, but after sometime and getting used to you can cope with it in a short time. Plus, it is totally usable even for games like Dota 2.
Software: The described bloat-ware isn't that much and can be uninstalled in matter of couple of minutes, yet there are some good stuff that you might consider keeping like "Acer recovery management", "Acer quick access" and "Acer care center". In addition, I haven't faced any problem updating the drivers of the GPU or any other drivers of the other components.
Build Quality: This is where the Nitro falls short, the lid is good but everything else seems cheap and leaves fingerprint marks after a long period use.
Heat: No problems whatsoever, but the back of the Nitro gets a little bit hot, though nothing major when gaming.
Noise: It is absent to minimal most of the time, but you can hear the fan's little murmuring when the "Dust Defender" is on and this is the only time when you hear it.
Connectivity: This is the Achilles' Heel of the Nitro, I suffer from the same unreliable Wi-Fi card and yes it is the Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Wireless Network Adapter and no there is no solution just try living with it if you don't want to change it to void the warranty. This is the conclusion that I have come to after trying everything to fix it from tweaking the adapter's settings, to the router's and even reinstalling the drivers. It disconnects and have a really bad reception signals (1 bar to none) when I'm 5 meters (15 feet) away from the router, heck I get 4 bars when I'm one meter (3.33 feet) away.
Battery life: It lasts for 3 to 4 hours maximum. I wouldn't complain if it lasted more though.
Overall impression: The looks, the speed, the display, the sound and the illuminated keyboard are so striking that you get attracted to the Nitro in no time, but when you spend some time with it and start discovering all these small problems, you start to hesitate about the decision that you have made. Nevertheless, after a long day at university or/and work the Nitro will give you a pleasant feeling even an exciting one every time you open the lid and witness its speed.
Passing days will unravel how this beast of a machine will age when facing the inevitable time, no high expectations though considering the build quality.
I totally recommended the Nitro to anyone who can survives the averagely short battery life, the poor Wi-Fi performance and the sticky but useable touchpad.

Nice review. I found this wifi problem quite strange, as I don't have any performance problems, even when I'm far from the router. Could you try another one ?

For the trackpad, I wish we could install the stock synaptic drivers, as we can't access any parameters right now.

I got some troubles since I changed the SSD and reinstalled my system. My SSD got a 100% activity time, even with nothing happening (I used the system monitor to track apps). Transfer rates are low (nothing is really using the disk) and response time get crazy (+2000ms).
It reinstalled the stock drivers from Acer website for the intel chipset, and tried intel website to update them : it seems that they are the newest available.

I'll run more tests, but it seems that this behavior is happening after my computer exists sleep mode. Any similar problem ?

I just got to open mine yesterday and I have to say after messing with it for every waking hour pretty much, that two things that others find as issues are not bothering me:

Wifi is working great for me on both freqs at any distance that I have used other devices in my home. No issues whatsoever for me.

Trackpad is also working great for me...feels a little cheaply made, but tracks great, clicks great, no issues with that either.

Will update other thoughts after I have had the lappie for a bit...cheers! BTW, I have the 17 inch VN7-791G-77JJ, loving it so far!

Thank you for your compliment @RDeluxe :D
As for trying another network, I don't personally think that it will change anything because my brother's laptop can get easily 3 bars when he's at the further corner of the house and far away from the router, when I get no reception of whatsoever.
I will give it a try with another router and I'll get back to you, meanwhile if you have any other solution I'm all ears.

I read something about some cards having cables plugged in the wrong order : Fix for Lenovo G580 WiFi Issues on Windows 8 | James Croft

Surprisingly, it seems that a lot of Lenovo computers have this issue (some people are still finding this tip helpful with 2014 lenovo laptops). Nothing about Acer, but I find it surprising that some of us have so many problems when others have none, with the same card.

Anybody managed to install Synaptics stock drivers + settings panel ? I would like to use more gestures (3 fingers app switching ?), and to see if the trackpad scrolling reactivity issue can be solved.

Edit : About the SSD lag and freeze (100% activity time, huge response time) it seems to only happen after " sleep". I just tried " hibernate" instead of sleep mode when closing the lid, and everything is fine. After recovering from sleep mode the system starts to get slow, the SSD activity time jumps to 100% for nothing, and its response time goes crazy. Anybody witnessing this behavior ?

I'm just a spectator since I do not own this laptop but since Most synaptics settings are usually stored in windows registry, has any one tried messing with them a bit to fix lag and tweak gesture etc etc ?

This option is not really the problem. It disables the touchpad while you are using the keyboard, creating a small delay if you swith from the keyboard to the touchpad.
Even if I disable this, it does not change the real problem, which is a 0.5/1sec lag between the moment your start scrolling and the actual scroll.

Any idea why after performing clean install of Windows 8.1 on V15 Nitro (VN7-591) and installing drivers my system ain't able to detect wifi adapter? While running previous win 8.1 version (the one that was installed by manufacturer) my wifi connection worked (at first was really slow, often got disconnected but this was fixed by resetting wifi router and since then everything worked fine) but then my Windows updated and wifi adapter hasn't worked since then so I reinstalled windows to hopefully solve the problem. How to fix this problem? I also checked if airplane mode is turned off so that can't be the problem.

I have a 571g and it looks exactly the same. Didn't notice it though until I saw your pictures. Can someone else confirm this is standard and not a problem with some units? Also a cracking noise can be heard when starting to push the lid up and apparently it comes from that right hinge.

But the thing that really annoys me is the fan noise when idle. It's not very loud, but you can definitely hear it humming - it's like the case vibrates, hard to describe -, even now when the only thing running is my browser and the CPU is at 45° C. Is it the same for you guys, or is my laptop a faulty one? (just as I was writing this, I turned it upside down to listen where was the sound exactly coming from and it stopped "vibrating", so I suppose my fan has issues). Still I would appreciate your feedback on this matter and if possible to control fan speeds

I really enjoy the keyboard, which for my typing style seems perfect. The touchpad on the other hand is non slippery and has some kind of delay when two finger scrolling. The only gestures configuration possible is limited and can be accessed by Charms/Settings/Change PC Settings/PC and Devices/Mouse and touchpad. After extensive research on this matter and "successfully" installing Synaptics, ALPS and Elantech drivers, I came to the conclusion that this is a joint Acer - Microsoft problem, that can't be surpassed at the moment. Apparently we have now not a brand touchpad, but a so called precision touchpad. I read it on the Acer forum in a post of an Acer representative, but I can't find the link now. Also I think the following articles support this theory: Microsoft aims to fix trackpad behavior in Windows 8.1 - CNET, Microsoft working with Intel to finally improve laptop trackpads with Windows 8.1 | The Verge.

On the bright side, my WLAN is made by Intel, so I had none of the horrible issues I read people are facing with Atheros. At least so far.

I don't have any fan noise at all. In fact, this is the most quiet laptop I ever had.

    Hey guys,
i have the notebook now for 4 month an iam still very happy with it. It rly took a beating and still feels like brand new.

The wlan is ok with the latest driver, but i will change it with a intel wlan chip nevertheless (alrdy bought it month ago)
someone postet a synaptic driver for the touchpad and multigesture works now pretty well ( but its wobbly, especially the rmb and it gets every day worst).
experienced some throtteling during game (i play in 2560*1080 tho)

but i feel there still some driver issues, hard to explain....

there is a new bios, but it dont works for my machine

    my joints btw:

and the idle noise (very silent) should be one of the strong sides by ther acer nitro

I've got the VN7-571G too and I recognize the humming on lowest fan speed, but I can't confirm the "case vibrating" thing.. I can confirm that the deep frequency of the sound disappears when lifting up the notebook, maybe it's only a reflection of the sound, as it is with the speakers firing down. Have you asked Acer about it? Maybe there are different fan revisions..

I still find the notebook to be very quiet, so other noises begin to annoy me, like the speakers: I hear noise coming from the speakers as soon as a sound is played, continues for about 5 secs after playback and then quits with a crackle. It sounds as if the amp is switched on for playback and of again. It's the same noise you get when turning a speaker system's volume up without playing sound. And it's not volume dependent. Does your model have this?

Maybe vibrating was not the right way to describe it, but it's hard to describe sounds with words, right? I think a cat purring it's more like it. Judging by your comment I think you know exactly what I'm talking about. Not loud, but annoying for my ears, others probably aren't bothered by it. At least I know it's not a problem with my unit now. I didn't talk to Acer, because I still have the option of returning the laptop and I'm trying to decide if it's worth keeping.

I don't have the issue you're describing, but what I found to be weird - on my quest to determine what part of the laptop makes the annoying sound - is that if I listen closely to the speakers they seem to be always on. There is white noise coming from them all the time. Fortunately that is inaudible unless I put my ear next to them.

Probably that's the reason why I don't get the crackle, cause they're always on. I would suggest installing the drivers from Acer website if you haven't done it already and install first Intel chipset, IO drivers Intel and afterwards Audio Realtek. At least, that's what I've done.

Yup I think it is just the same.. purring cat get's it quite right. I'm fine with it, because the fan is usually off during light usage.

I have the stock windows with all preinstalled drivers up to date, and the sound driver does some kind of energy saving to switch the speakers off when they're not used. Unfortunately this doesn't kick in when disabling sound in Windows. It's just making me kind of mad, because this white noise is more noticeable than the "purring" or the hard disk. If you hear it only close to your speakers, then there is hope getting it fixed to an acceptable level.

    Hi to all owners.

I'm on this machine since couple days now , bought it w/out OS. Installed W8.1 on ssd via UEFI bios setting since than I'm heaving issue with touch pad and webcam.

Webcam is not detected in Device Manager it is like it is not present at all. Like it is not connected ??? No exclamation marks in Device manager.

Touch pad has no mufti touch but what is worst it has no double tap for drag and drop. Only way to drag a file and move it is to press the left touch pad button and while pressing move it to desired place. Edge scrolling is not available.

    Anybody having same issue ??

Thank you for any input to my problem.

    Best regards.

So, I got my Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-591G-74SK from new egg, after a couple months and heavy use it was time to give a proper review, here is my list of pros and cons:

    PROS
    - Great Performance, no issues at all with any software, from MS Office, VMware, Adobe Creative Suite to latest games in high resolution. Really liked!
    - Web browsing and video playback just runs really smooth, not lag at all even with plenty (20+) of web pages opened.
    - Nvidia GTX 860m and Intel Core i7 4710HQ runs everything quite great.
    - The combination SSD + HDD just makes it perfect, that it should be an standard in every laptop. This laptop turns on (or restarts) in about 10 seconds or less.
    - No issues at all with the wifi card, tested at home, office and friends routers, probably is not the fastest wifi card, but for me it works fine.
    - Backlit Keyboard is nice and the keyboard has plenty of space to easily access all keys.
    - Slick design and built materials, really enjoy how it looks and feels.
    - For all the power it has, it is really lightweight.
    - Doesn't heat at all, well it does a little bit on the middle right space of the keyboard when you are using high load of resources, but nothing that would turn uncomfortable.
    - It's really silent, most of the time I hardly know if the fans are turned on. (Two fans)
    - Is just great that the fans are located in the back of the laptop, I have never got "steel burned" in my arms.
    - For an IPS screen it is ok, took me time to get used to this type of screen after years of using old TFT screens.
    - Liked how the charger connector fits in parallel with the laptop, avoiding messing up with the cable.
    - USB 3.0 is fast, should be an standard in every laptop.
    - Even tough its 4 speakers are located in the bottom, the sound is quite good.
    - Battery performance is good, nothing more that you would expect for a laptop.
    - Found the relation price / performance the better in the market as today.

    CONS
    - I hate this laptop spacebar, this is my main complain, it doesn't work if you press in any of the corners or in the external sides, you have to always press firmly towards the middle of the key, making really uncomfortable if you are a fast typewriter. Would really like to see a keyboard replacement that corrects this. But for a +$1200 laptop, this should not be allowed!
    - I don't get used to this keyboard, it works, but i would like if it would be more "deep" in response when you press each key.
    - The arrow keys are half of the other keys, if you have big fingers this can be a little bit uncomfortable.
    - IPS screen could be much more bright, it is not as bright as an smartphone screen in the outside. Also, for me the whites are not true white, a little bit yellowish, might just need a proper calibration.
    - Most of the time I have always used an external mouse, so for me the mousepad works as bad as in any other laptop.
    - Not really into Windows 8, is not terrible after a couple weeks you get used to, but would like to see official drivers support for Windows 7.
    - The bottom border, where you place your hand wrist, is too sharp, sometimes so sharp that it hurts.
    - A little bit of a fingerprint magnet.
    - No easy access to take out or replace the battery!
    - Charger is a little bit bulky.
    - A lot of Acer bloatware, nobody likes bloatware.
    - Only 5200rpm HDD, not really a big issue.
    - USB, HDMI and LAN ports are all only on the right side and way too close to each other.

I am a Computer engineer, web developer and casual gamer, really was looking for a powerful workstation laptop that also would let me enjoy the latest games without giving the wrong impression in business meetings.

I do recommend this laptop if you can live with the mentioned cons, there is not such thing as a perfect laptop, just ask yourself what use and needs do you have for any laptop.

My spacebar works perfect, no matter where i hit it.

Imho the quality control on this laptop is the biggest problem.....joints, keys, touchpad, speakers, vents. Everyone has different issues. But maybe its acers way to achieve these prices

Btw: anyone installed the new bios?

    I got a 591g, don't know why it's not working.

Guys, I'm waiting for mine to arrive home, I'm now shopping for headphones for Skype and gaming.
Has anyone tried headphones with in line mic? I mean, the ones that comes with the microphone and audio output all in one cable?
I almost bought some headphones with the traditional 2 cable (one for audio and one for mic) but then realized that this laptop have just one input (audio+mic combo)

Yep, I tried with my Philips headset (headphone + mic, designed for phone use) and it worked perfectly. The drivers ask you which type of device you plug (headphone/mic/headset).

seems like the bios on the acer page is the non secure version and our bios is a newer version that has secure bios which is used to prevent unofficial modification to the bios
