The M.2 port is one...
You mean that it can read both? I'm not sure about that...

I sent a email to Acer about the 3 problems that I have with this laptop :
1. Impossibility to update the bios (why update a unusable bios ?) - Minor
2. Problem with my M500 and sleep (100% usage + response time = system not usable after waking up from sleep mode). I saw a lot of topics about this. It may be drivers related, it may be BIOS related. - Major
3. The touchpad. I doubt that this touchpad can't handle 3 fingers gesture, and I can't stand the scrolling delay. I would really like to have a option panel (using Synaptic stock drivers)
I'll keep you updated.
Anybody having the same problems with a custom SSD ?
EDIT : After installing Intel Rapid Storage last drivers, it seems to work correctly. Amen.Last edited: Jan 4, 2015 -
Two weeks ago, bought a laptop . Replaced the HDD to 2.5' SSD plus add 8 Gb RAM (sum 12 Gb). Clean install windows 8.1 pro . All drivers from the site apart from power management(not need - windows do it better) and touchpad. All good.

I searched for vender 8086 and device 8c3a but could not find any driver for this. anyone can help? -

Acer's upgraded laptops include one with a motion-sensing 3D camera
Acer is showing up at CES with a lot of laptop upgrades in store, and its Windows PC revamps have a few tricks up their sleeve. By far the highlight of the mix is a new version of the high-end V 17 Nitro that includes an Intel RealSense 3D camera. The depth sensor lets you control games and other supporting apps with hand motions instead of reaching for the trackpad and keyboard. If you're the creative sort, it'll also let you scan your face and other 3D objects for inclusion in games or 3D printing projects. There aren't any major upgrades under the hood, although you're still getting a beefy 17-inch desktop replacement between the quad-core 2.5GHz Core i7 chip, GeForce GTX 860M graphics and combination of solid-state (128GB or 256GB) and spinning hard drive (1TB) storage. You won't have to wait long to give this system a try, as it's shipping in January. However, it's not yet clear what the trick camera adds to the price, if anything.

It is really disappointing that my 2 weeks old laptop is already outdated. -
So... No 960M yet

Mine is the vn7 591g 744p (i7, 16GB ram, 256GB ssd + 1TB hdd)
I made a win 8.1 fresh install with all drivers installed and updated. Now I have some problems and need your help.
I have breaks in every game I tested (insurgency, grid 2, euro truck simulator 2). All games run normal but every 5/10min (approximately) the laptop breaks for 2/3s and then return to normality.
What do you think is the problem? Or if it can be anything how should I analyse whats happening when the breaks occurs? Any program recommended? -

@xqzt
Look into the possibility of it being CPU throttling. It might not be the case but it looks like it from the description you gave. -

Hi, I am thinking on replacing the wireless card inside my 17inch V nitro. I have already disassembled tha laptop and checked all the components. Just wondering if a chip like this will be compatible with our board.
Amazon.com: Intel 3160 Dual Band Wireless AC + Bluetooth Mini PCIe card Supports 2.4 and 5.8Ghz B/G/N/AC Bands: Electronics
Just under 20€ for ac wifi with 5mhz compatibility.
Any thoughts? -

I will check the 2 options and report back the conclusions. Thanks

Hi, i have a 17' version and i'm runing windows 7. I know most people here will recommend to use windows 8.1, but i just like 7 too much. My problem is touchpad. It's terrible overall, but i could live with that, bearing in mind that everything else is perfect for me. But i just can't find any working drivers so that at least scrolling will work. Drivers from acer website just say that they can't found any device to update drivers... Maybe anyone else running win7 and can help me? Many thanks, btw sorry for english!
-
Best guess anyway: Don't look back, there will always bee something newer and better, once you pulled the trigger. And my 791G does a fine job so far, so I am happy. -
Now I can say that imo is different and is better.Daft Paolo likes this. -
If you want to... Just disable the Metro Interface... And it will look exactly like Windows 7

Guys, is there any problem if I add an M2 SSD and use the preinstalled Hybrid Disc (ssdhd) as a storage hard drive?
Since is not a normal Hard Disk, of course...
Thanks -
Well guys, i tried win8 for a few days, but i don't know, ir's just not for me i think. I think about giving a try to win10, as it looks like vista / win7 scenario when vista was only so so and then win7 delivered all you want. But i think win10 will be in the end of the year, or i'm wrong? Anyway, as far as i know, touchpad drivers have issues with win8 as well? By the way, what's your temperatures while gaming with 17' version, guys? I tried nba 2k15 and it vent pretty hot for my understanding (~80 and more cpu, gpu pretty hot as well) even though i've read only good opinions bout cooling on this lap. What you think about cooling pad option? Thanks.
-
In the meantime I will try to run the games on the ssd instead of hdd. -
my v17 reached 75 Celsius playing titnfall , didn't try other games till now -
Temperatures playing nba never reached 80c. So temperatures ok, touchpad... well, i can live with it. Then wifi... Have problems with bad reception as well, will try to read older posts in this thread, maybe i'll find some drivers that can help... Anything else is perfect for me. Damn, i would'nt mind paid some extra money for this laptop if it don't have these stupid issues....

Moving the games to ssd solved the breaks. Finally!
Two more questions guys:
1) The camera has very poor quality. What about yours? I did not install any drivers.
2) Is there a way to set default keyboard light false on boot? I will use it very few times and I have to turn it off every time I boot the laptop. -

concerning the keyboard lighting: I don't know a way. perhaps in BIOS. haven't looked there, yet. (plus I haven't searched how to enter BIOS at all ...

You can change the card as many times as you want, it may not help much because of poor antenna placement.downloads likes this. -
So I received the VN7-791G-77HR two days ago. Spent a good amount of time updating, uninstalling bloat, setting things up.
I'll do a full review later on, but so far, here are my impressions:
*Great screen. Bright, good viewing angles, nice colours
*Very quiet, even when gaming it doesn't get too loud
*Bad track pad - hard to use right clicks, and it's hard to move your finger over
*Thermals are pretty good. After a few hours of playing Dragon Age 2/Mass Effect 3,CPU temps didn't go above 83C, and GPU topped off around 71C
*Looks good, very sleek. I had a Lenovo Y50 before, and they look very similar from the front
*No WiFi issues so far, but I'm pretty close to my router, so that may not mean much
*Default HDD is ok, but I definitely miss an SSD.Last edited: Jan 7, 2015Daft Paolo likes this. -
How hard would it be to replace the touchpad? Isn't it a quite standard size? Would it be possible?

Ok, so for anyone who's thinking about installing Windows 7, here's what I did:
- First, you'll have to get into the BIOS of the system and change the boot system to "legacy" instead of UEFI (at least that's what I did, so I could get my bootable USB to run)
-Once you've changed that setting you'll need to change the boot order in the BIOS to make sure that the USB boots first, before the hard drive (I didn't need to do this step because I took out the original hard drive and replaced it with a faster 7200rpm drive, and that didn't have an OS installed on it, so it wouldn't boot up anyways)
-Turn off the laptop
-Plug in your bootable USB that has the Windows 7 ISO on it
-Turn the laptop back on
-Laptop should detect the usb and begin to load Windows
-Follow instructions and install Windows 7
-That's pretty much it....Once it's installed you'll need all the appropriate drivers so that everything functions properly...Here is what I used for the drivers:
Bluetooth Driver (atheros) --> Acer Website
Card Reader (realtek) --> Acer Website
Chipset (Intel) --> Acer Website
VGA (Intel) --> Acer Website
VGA (Nvidia) --> Acer Website
Wireless LAN (Atheros)--> Acer Website (Same insallation file as the bluetooth, so you can use either file, both bluetooth and wifi are installed at the same time, with a single file)
Intel Usb 3.0 functiionality --> https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...?DwnldID=22824
Ethernet/LAN --> Realtek
Intel AMT driver --> the driver from the Acer website kept giving me an error, when I would try and run it, I'm going to try and find the driver from Intel's website and see if that works
Synaptics Driver --> This driver from Acer's website also didn't work, So I'm going to try and find a driver for this from the Synaptics website...although the touchpad still functions without it
Other than the two drivers I just mentioned, everything else installed perfectly...and everything seems to be functioning fine so far.
Also, there was no driver on the Acer website for the webcam...is there a driver available/needed for the webcam?
Also, I haven't checked but in order the have the hotkeys functioning, I will need to download and install the Acer Launch Manager Application, right?

Seriously, just give it a few days. It's 99% the same OS.
After installing those new Intel Disk Drivers and being able to use the sleep mode again, I must say that I'm pretty happy for now. I would really like to solve this scroll delay problem ... i'm going to boot using an ubuntu live CD to check is this behavior is hardware related. -

This is not a thread about Windows 8. There are quite a few of them and all are problematic. Please stick to the subject.

Had my laptop for about 3 weeks. Love it (and the wife hates it
)
Here in Malaysia the 15" was available for about 3 months and 17" just released last week. Price-wise, with weakness of our currency, the 15" was a very good deal (priced similar to the Y50 TN screen Freedos option) and I got a 2y to 3y warranty extension and 3y McAfee subscription for free.

Classic Windows Shell install (not a Win 8.1 fan) but have not removed the bloatware. A M.2 SSD is in the plan
Am also having the wi-fi problems, but with the antenna discoveries and the lack of M.2 Wifi card availability here in Malaysia, I got around it by travelling with a TP-Link Nano router TL-WR702N (MYR59/USD17) set up as a wifi repeater.
Would like to see better bios optionsLast edited: Jan 9, 2015
