Here is my review after using the Aspire VN7-791G-73AW model for a month:
Pros:
Display - It is perfect! I was read a lot of reviews where the users says that display isn't bright enough, it's dim or so. I can say that mine is perfect. It has a great range of brightness and colors, so everything looks great. Also IPS allows that picture looks the same from almost all the angles.
Keyboard - Very easy for typing and produces a low noise. I had an some old Acer model once and I can say that they didn't change arrangement of the letters on the keyboard at allwhich is good. They only changed their response and quality.
Speakers - It's incredible thanks to Dolby. Not so much for music where you need a better bass, but for movies. It is like a home theatre, where you hear surrounding sound. And it's loud, very loud.
Speed - I rarely play games, but I use it for business (8-9h a day). It is so fast that opens the applications instantly. Visual Studio loads a project in a few seconds. This is a result of I7 CPU and SSD. Also, there is no lag at all. The only thing where it need a 1-2 sec to respond is when you need something from HDD, and in power options you set that HDD turns off when it is inactive.
Noise - None. When the fan is running you can barely hear it. Only when Dust defender is active you can hear the fans running, but it last for a few seconds.
Heat - I didn't notice by now that it heats at all. Only if I put it on some soft material and work from there for a few hours or so, then it's barely warm. But I didn't play some demanding games by now so it is not relevant.
WiFi - I didn't notice any problems with WiFi. In fact it is the first time that I got the same net speed over WiFi or LAN. My router is in another room (about 5m).
Cons:
Touchpad - I like all the features of the touchpad. It is responsive as expected and multitouch works well (2 fingers scroll, 2 fingers click for context menu). But the main problem is a rattling sound that produce on stronger touch. Like it have a little more space than it should. In fact if you type a bit stronger on keyboard without relying hand on laptop, you can hear the touchpad rattling. I don't know is this normal or my laptop have this defect?
Noise when running on battery - I noticed that when the laptop is unplugged it produces some processing high pitched noise on any action (when loading something). It is a low sound but it appears only when it is running on battery. I read about processors C states in which it enters in order to save energy and because of that it produces this noise. I tried to level processor settings when it is on battery with when it is plugged in in power management (I've even changed hidden settings from registry), but the noise remains. Does anyone knows how can I fix this?
I hope that this review was helpful. -
Since someone refered to my post I would like to explain what seems "better" after I replaced Atheros chip with Intel.
Number of bars seems the same but it obviously doesn't show the real situation.
Signal to noise ratio is cca 3-6 dB better with Intel when checked with "Wifi info view".
Also, Atheros tends to loose connection to the internet when moved to some locations in my house although it shows 3 or 4 bars.
Intel doesn't loose the signal at the same locations but speed drops very much.
When I test the speed with "Speedtest" Atheros has many ups and downs and Intel is much more stable.
But, to emphasize once again, even with Intel chip, 591G has much worse reception than any other laptop, iPad or phone that I use at same locations.
I've tried many channel, driver and settings combinations but nothing helps.
Only thing that will help this laptop is to design antennas in completly different way.
I'm very curious how Killer chip compares to Atheros and Intel when placed into 591G.
Best regards to all. -
Apart from the size, is the panel mounted on the 17" different from the 15"?
I'm planning to go to Berlin this weekend (I live in the Netherlands) to buy the VN7-571G-56W6 version at cyberport store for 729€, I hope that I will not get a defect model!
EDIT: While reading the German forum of notebookchat it appears that many of the VN7-571G-56W6 models have the following issues:
- Space key with scarce feedback or noisy.
- Loose touchpad vibrating when typing.
- Case not properly closed/locked forming a 3mm gap near the USB ports.
- Dead pixel
I'm starting to question whether I should buy this notebook given that it would be quite problematic to return it to the shop since I'm living in another country...Last edited: Jan 19, 2015 -
I love mine...it's everything I wanted and could have hoped for!! -
In regards to post on page 100, I decided to revert back to the stock Windows 8.1 and just run classic shell on top, because there was an issue with the trackpad while running Windows 7. The trackpad is a "precision" trackpad and apparently is only compatible with Windows 8. While it does run on Windows 7, you lose the scrolling functions due to the lack of drivers.
Also, I have installed an m.2 ssd (256gb Transcend) in the ssd slot, as my boot drive. Does anyone know what size screw I need in order to secure the ssd to the motherboard?
If anyone is having trouble getting Windows 8.1 installed onto their ssd, and changing the standard hard drive to a storage drive, let me know and I'll help you all out. -

Could you advise me what kind of m.2 i need, so that it fit and work fine? I'm thinking about 128gb, thanks guys! -

for your question of different panels: yeah, those panels are different - they have to be, as the one is a 17'' LG versus the 15'', which is still manufactured by LG, but has to be a different model.
verdict: I still love my 791G - it's everything I was looking for. awesome looking, nice backlite keyboard, awesome screen, very quite (well, silent in idle and not to noisy while gaming) and good performance in games (the one I play, at least). and the speakers are okay, too! last point: pretty fast SSD plus a HDD for storage and a optical drive on top (BR-writer).
what I just discoverd lately: the laptop run more quite while I have it on my legs (okay, I pay attention on how to place it, so that my legs don't block the fan-intakes). had it on my flat wooden table last week and it sounded clearly louder there (still nothing extreme). -

Jaggyjags
You probably talk about 15' version, cuz i think only 42mm lenght module will fit 17' version ? Thats why i'm looking for comfirmation here. -
No, it's 80mm one too.
See a screenshot from a video where they dismantle VN7-791G I made
The video in question is here look around 9 minutes mark. -

Yes it is the same.

- Space key with scarce feedback or noisy - it's a bit noisier than other keys but it's not a big deal.
- Loose touchpad vibrating when typing. - this is the answer to my question, so it's normal for this model
- Case not properly closed/locked forming a 3mm gap near the USB ports. - I didn't check this before. It looks like there is a gap but I wouldn't say it's 3mm. Maybe 1-2 most.
- Dead pixel - I've looked for those but it looks like I got a good display.
Thanks -
Guys I feel devastated. Really. Nothing works to stop the horrible throttling.
3 Days ago bought Acer Aspire Nitro VN7 591g 15' version. 860m 2gb, 1tb 5400rpm hdd, i7-4710hq. 2.5Gz (3.4)
I am currently staying in pretty cold room, cold enough to make me shiver sometimes.
First thing to do after windows install was to check the performance. So I've installed... Watch Dogs. Set presets to high, resolution to 1920. Graphics have amazed me. Mezmerized me. I spend 15 minutes slowly walking around doing tutorial, all is smooth and im happy as hell. 40fps+. That is untill I begin to drive fast. Fps from 40+ drops to 10 every half a minute. I install HWmonitor and a bunch of other cpu monitoring programs. Results are:
Once CPU hits 3300mhz and 100% thread usage, temps get to 96*c and CPU drop to 800mhz and ~12 fps for 5 seconds. I tried to lower settings and it gets better but... you still get trottle to 800mhz once temps are too high, even when you game on LOW settings and have usually 60FPS. Why didnt they make it so when theres 60 fps, cpu uses say 3000mhz instead of full speed and doesnt overheat? ?
Battlefield 3. Same . 50 fps all good and then throttle to 800mhz and huge fps lag spike. Medium settings, a game that is 3 years old.
I tinker with Watch Dogs settings and manage to find a sweetspot when cpu doesnt overheat. No throttling, im happy.
I then decide to install something new from 2014.
THIEF comes to mind.
On normal settings solit 50+ FPS, on all ultra 38 FPS. No throttling. I look at CPU speed graphs and see that it is used the other way. It never stays at max 3300mhz for a long time. So maybe it was a poor optimisation issue in Watch Dogs that caused overheating and throttling? I decide to try and stress Thief. I run around on full speed on max settings and few minutes later my cpu drops to 790mhz. Here it is. HWmonitor reads Thermal Throttle = yes.
GTA IV. That's something I always wanted to try. I know it was poorly optimized, but hope for the best.
Medium settings, 1600x900 = ~average 45 fps. Pretty good. Untill it drops to 11fps cause of overheat again. I lower settings to LOWEST possible. Runs at 60 fps all seems to be great, and then BAM! throttle and lag spikes again.
Star Citizen. Nope. Was a bad Idea. Why was I even hoping? ~7fps (by personal feeling) in hangar but atleast no throttling.
Im back to GTA IV. Read about Intel CPU management software. Installed, Undervoltaged (-90 and lowered CPU modifiers like the image from user on this forum showed). Game runs at the same FPS, CPU temp stays at 91c which is pretty good comparing to what it was. Throttles almost do not occur but my PC becomes unstable and just crashes. So i leave undervoltage alone and just change x35 multiplier to x31. And at 3090 mhz it still manages to hit highest temp and throttle.
So. For a gaming laptop, performance is not what I would expect. From my feel:
If you run games on ultra you get 30 fps and throttle cause cpu cant keep up.
If you run games on low you get 60 fps and throttle cause cpu runs too fast and heat builds up to the point it drops to 800mhz. Although at these low settings it could simply use less mhz, say 3000 to not overcool, it doesnt. And thats what pisses me off. (Even when I limited CPU clock in Anti-Throttle program, it is seldomly dropped to 700mhz. )
I will try battlefield 4 tonight and see how it performs.
I am seriously concidering taking laptop back and switching for 17' version. If they let me. I hope.
>>>>>>>>>>> QUESTIONS FOR 17' GAMERS <<<<<<<<<<<<<
1. Do you experience same s### as I do? Under heavy gaming, does FPS drop down drastically for you? IS COOLBOOST technology efficient enough to swap 15' for 17'? Maybe theres better cpu speed management in 17' version bios? I've read in reviews it doesnt throttle. IS THAT TRUE?
2. Did anyone try GTAIV or Watch Dogs on high settings and managed to keep stable FPS?
3. Maybe its just my thermal paste being applied in a really bad manner? Some people write that their 15 doesnt throttle. Then again, looking at that Far Cry 3 gaming video on youtube I can see occasional lag spikes that other commentators seem to miss.
I mean, with all the trouble now, I cant imagine how horrible it will be during summer time
I like the laptop, how it looks and how it feels, the keys and screen, but god damn it, that throttle means that I wont be able to play ANY future games, as their demand for cpu will increase. I cant even play 3 year titles on high. Its definitely not what I expected from a GAMING laptop.
Spend a day to configure a game so it runs smooth? I thought those days of Pentium D and 9800GT were over. it really pisses me off to get same experience from A GAMING LAPTOP.
Should I try to switch it for 17'? Will it help the cause? -
17 inch user here, I think there should be a problem with your heatsink or thermal paste, After half an hour stress testing both cpu and gpu with Prime96 and Furmark no thermal throttle was measure with max temps of 78 ºC for the gpu with always constant FPS on Furmark and 88ºC for the cpu, of course after certain temperatures cpu stays at nominal frecuency (2.5Ghz). If I were you I will repaste it and apply small pressure over the heat pipes just over cpu and gpu, I can't think of other problems as a game like that would never stress your laptop at its maximum.

Have one last question
Since i'm using win7 and so had no touchpad drivers, and because touchpad is so big, i always touch it when typing and that's very annoying. My question is, in win8, is there's any setting (or maybe that happens by default) to deactivate touchpad while writing ? I think i need win 8 after all...
-
Touchpad settings
"To help prevent the cursor from accidentaly moving while you type, turn off taps or change th edelay before taps work."
*No delay(Always on)
*Short delay
*Medium delay
*Long delay
*Turn off taps
Personally I was against win8 as I got used to win7 a lot. But after a couple of days, I changed the way I look at it and I thing win8 is the way to go. Excluding some comptability issues.
UEFI win8 system wakes up from hybernation REALLY fast even without SSD. -
With delay I mean, the first time you move the touchpad, it will not react immediately. -
A user form a German forum told me his VN7-571G-56W6, produced at the end of October (production date can be found on the back of the laptop) doesn't have any of the mentioned issues (see post #1261), there could have been an improvement in the production or simply stricter quality check.
-
-
Mine is from 23 october.
However, the touchpad sucks and also the screen is not what I expected.
On german forums I found a lot of people that are complaining about the screen in the 15 inch model. There is even someone who swapped the screen with the screen of the Acer v5.
They all describe the same thing. When you move your head a bit, or you look at the screen from an angle, the screen is not evenly lit. There apears a shade of grey, specially noticeable on a white background. Also it's not the brightest screen.
I'm sure others should have noticed this on there 15 inch model. I have a iiyama IPS screen attached to it, the difference is very very big.
The 15 inch Nitro has the LGD0443 screen. The v5 has a B156HAN01.2 screen from AU Optronics, which i saw yesterday in real life, and is much better.
I contacted Acer support about the touchpad. Default answers, like send it in for repair, do a bios upgrade etc, not helpful.
In all other aspects the laptop is great. But these two things just aren't allowed to be that bad for a € 1000 laptop ?!?!
Someone have an idea how to address these isues to Acer? -
On the subject of Wi-Fi. Did you guys notice where one of the antennas is in the 17" model? Right bottom corner (palmrest). It would be hilarious if it wasn't so dumb...
-
Side note: I had trouble deciding if 15 or 17 inch version, I think I made the right choice with the 17 inch one after all the problems some of you are encountering. No issues here, screen viewing angles are great, touchpad works perfectly for me, love the double fingers to swipe, no heating issues. -
Hey guys,
I've been reading this thread a lot before making a purchase and appreciate feedback.
I have run into a hiccup.
I have purchased the Qualcomm Atheros Killer N1525 network card to replace the older model Qualcomm card people complain about network connectivity with.
I found links to the drivers on Qualcomm's website and it looks like the links are dead now. I found drivers on MSI's website for this card but it seems they are not working. Can anyone that may have installed this card in this laptop guide me through the process? Where can I find the appropriate drivers to make the N1525 work?
Here is the link to where the drivers should be...
http://www.qca.qualcomm.com/resources/driverdownloads/
This is incredibly frustrating haha. It took me 15 minutes to carefully open this annoying case and replace the card and I can tell its going to take days to figure out the driver issues.
Thank you.
Edit:
Found solution. Download Killer Driver Remover tool and the Killer Network Driver from MSI website. Also did a fresh install of OS and drivers and this laptop runs much smoother now. Full bars and network speed in every room of my house. Also Acer bloatware is a bummer, reformatting that hard drive never felt better.Last edited: Jan 22, 2015 -
What about using an adapter from M.2 to mSata?
Are they compatible with Acer V-nitro?
This should be a nice way for choosig a wider range of ssd for this notebook (?) -
-
Just an update. Day3 after pickup, Acer Support seems to have conceded my VN7-591G has a "bad" wifi card and is currently waiting for replacement parts. I tried calling but they refuse to say whether I will get the same Atheros card or a newer Intel 7265NGW card. Just that the notebook is too new and they do not have parts for it yet. They also usually use "refurbished" parts but will test it before giving me the laptop back.

To the guys having throttling issues, there is a simple fix. Underclock and undervolt. 2.6 Ghz & Arma 3 and my cpu doesn't ever get above 70c. You shouldn't see any performance drop in 99% of games because 99% of games are GPU bottle-necked. It just so happens that Arma 3 is a more CPU intensive game, otherwise I could get away with lower clocks, probably below 2.0 ghz.
This is my stable 2.6 Ghz "Gaming" clock.Anyways, here you go.
If you're going to undervolt too, start at like -50 mV and work your way down after making sure it's stable. Don't use the built in stress test of Intel XTU. I found that the best way to test a overclock or undervolt is 12+ hours of Prime95 or a few hours of gaming.Either run Prime95 for a few hours or go play some games. If your laptop restarts then that undervolt is unstable. Don't worry though, undervolting won't damage your CPU.Last edited: Jan 22, 2015 -
A couple of days ago my touchpad suddenly stopped working completely. Disabling/enabling the touchpad with keyboard shortcuts doesn't do anything. Any ideas of how to fix this?
Acer VN7 571G -
What does it say in the hardware devices list?
-
I tried that, found the picture in the beginning of a forum. Undervolting got temps lovered but system unstable and crashing. Tried -90, -50, -20. Crashes all the time. Changing multiplpier didnt help as the card got hot anyway.

Ive been lurking around this thread but posting for the first time.
Procrastinating on Skylake and Windows 10 for a year caused me to miss out on some good laptops
-> the Asus G550jk (but lost faith in Asus after they replaced it with the messed up n551jk and g551) which had the perfect Samsung PLS matte display and the black aluminium chassis with red accents with overall good build quality in a perfect 15.6 form factor. But it vented heat out in the front of the screen. The Acer vents heat at the back below the screen so no issues there.
+1 Acer
With each passing day, my dreadfully slow dv6 was pulling my hair apart. Finally caved in and bought the Acer V17.
Here are my impressions of the the VN7-791G-77JJ after 4 days of use.
- Windows 8.1 is not that bad, I got used to it, but miss the start menu.
- Good speakers L+R
- No keyboard flex yippee, coming from hp dv6 which had bad keyboard flex. The keyboard back-light is not bad, except it turns on automatically when woken up from sleep.
- Good cooling system. Coming from a SXPS 1645 and dv6, the V17 runs silent and cool, Optimus & 2 fans help.
Fans spin up occasionally but most of the time cant hear them unlike the dv6 and 1645.
As I was typing this review on my V17, my dv6 fan was audible, but the Acer was dead silent.
- Good stable hinges, coming from the dv6 which had flimsy and wobbly hinges
- The full sized keyboard with numpad is awesome and a joy to type on.
- No issues with wifi despite the antennas not running along the screen. If you see the pics in the notebookcheck review, one antenna is placed near the DVD drive and the other near the exhaust vent, when all laptops have the wifi antennas running along the two sides of the screen
- Coming from a i3-3110m, 5400rpm HP dv6 which was a living nightmare, manufacturers seriously need to make 256gb SSDs standard. Forget bootup and restarts, everything from updates, software installations, opening eclipse, matlab, etc is lighting fast. Im glad I bought the SSD model. Replacing the HDD with an SSD is difficult if you look up the disassembly videos.
Also if you look carefully in the disassembly youtube video, a single SATA ribbon cable connects the motherboard with the HDD for both power and data which is DUMBFOUNDING a bit.
- The display is bright with good viewing angles and I dont think I see any visible backlight bleed. But I feel the contrast is messed up a bit and the colors saturated. Need to verify this.
Drawbacks
-> The edges of the palmrest, basically the peripheral edges of the laptop are sharp and cut into your wrist while typing making for a very uncomfortable typing experience. This was quite a dealbreaker for me!
This was especially prominent and painful when writing and editing this review.
The reason for these raised sharp edges is because the V17 doesnt have a rubber grommet lining the screen bezel (seen in macbook pro and other laptops, the rubber grommet acts like cushion for the screen to rest on preventing the keyboard keys from touching and forming an impression on the screen) The Acer doesnt have a grommet but instead has has wafer thin raised sharp edges surrounding the palmrest. Curse you Acer for this! Its painful while typing.
I see a lot of manufacturers recently compromising and cheaping out on the rubber grommet bezel lining. My old dv6 had the rubber lining but the newer HP envy laptops dont, Asus had it on N550 and G550 but removed it on the N551 and G551.
-1 Acer
-> The L-shaped power jack is great BUT the power supply cable running from the adapter to the notebook is thinner than that of my dv6. My dv6 HP 65w adapter has a thicker cable compared to the 135w Lite-on adapter. Logic says the cable should have been thicker or atleast the same. Law of Resistivity, thicker wire, more current less resistance, as resistance is proportional to length and inversely proportional to cross-sectional area of a wire
HP 65w, 19.5v, 3.33 amps
Acer Lite-on 135w, 19v, 7.1 amps, double the amperage on a thinner wire than the 65w adapter. Doesnt make any sense.
-> Opening the laptop screen every single time is difficult since it lacks what macbooks have near the trackpad (dont know the terminology, a latch ?)
-> The touchpad is spongy, but sensitivity, gestures and two finger scroll are bad. Not downright horrendous, but could have been implemented better. the macbooks have the best trackpad.
-> There is no dust filter on the intake vents on the bottom!
-> The end key is oddly placed, it should be next to the home key on the numpad but its not. I keep reaching for the end key but end up hitting the pg up key instead, the dv6 had correct key placement.
-> This laptop is slim (slimmer than my dv6) but huge, makes my bulky 15.6" dv6 look small. Its size also makes it more susceptible to damaging it unknowingly. Acer could have trimmed down on the size of the huge screen bezel, takes up a lot of unnecessary space making the laptop bigger. The laptop is not that heavy and Acer could have cut down on the optical drive.
Please make sure you buy a good bag to carry the laptop. I received my AmazonBasics 17.3" laptop bag today and I was overjoyed because the past few days I have been carrying this laptop haphazardly worrying about damaging this beautiful laptop at every single moment. The bag is reasonably small but quite spacious, fits the V17 perfectly and is a steal for the money and quality it offers.
The bag costs $4 more than the sleeve, better buy the bag. I regret not buying the bag earlier.
-> If you see the youtube unboxing videos, Asus, Acer laptops come in cardboard boxes with no Styrofoam cushioning. I was worried about shipping damage. Learn from Dell, the XPS and Alienware laptops come in a box within a box.
-> battery already had 3% wear despite Dec manufacture
I was really tempted to buy the matte 4k sharp display model. Could have saved $200 on the V17 on Black Friday but in hindsight, I would have probably bought the 4k acer v15 nitro on black friday which was a steal for $1199 with an ssd though i havnt read a negative review about the 4k model. But even the 15 inch 4k model throttles as verfied by notebookcheckLast edited: Jan 23, 2015 -
Wire resistance = 13.17 mOhm/m (16AWG gauge) * 1.7 m length * 2 wires = 44.8 mOhms
Voltage drop = 44.8 mOhms * 7.1 A = 318 mV (1.67%)
Dramatic energy loss! -
Guys can someone with windows 8.1 pre installed, and a DVD that has the so called "Acer bloatware" and is called ACER RESOURCE CENTER make an iso out of it and upload somewhere? Or upload plain installation files? I have linux version VN17, installed win8.1 and theres no Acer recovery manager, Coolboost, Dust Defender, Acer Cloud etc. My resources DVD says Rev.2 so anyone with a newer version could you do that?
-
I'm planning to upgrade to an SSD, as I bought the cheaper 571G model with an HDD only. I guess there are three options:
1. Replace the HDD entirely
2. Add an SSD to the M2 slot
3. Replace the ODD
Does anyone know if any of those routes has obstacles? For instance, do the models shipped without an SSD have a working m2 slot? Where to get a carry to replace the ODD? Would one run into problems installing Windows 8 from scratch, and how does it work with regards to the license/key? -
Sorry for maybe stupid question, but i've saw new wifi / bluetooth drivers on acer website, now there's two types of drivers for different modules - NFA344 and NFA222. How can i check which one i have? I have Aida64 program, but wasn't able to find that.
EDIT: Don't worry i've found it on a back of laptop. :thumbsup:Last edited: Jan 24, 2015 -

Acer CoolBoost (only for VN7 Black Edition) doesn't exist as separate downloadable/installable app. It is the component of Acer Quick Access. It has no its own window and appears only as the switcher in Acer Quick Access panel, and only on Black Edition.
Acer Dust Defender (only for 17" VN7, AFAIK) is the component of Acer Quick Access.
Acer Recovery Management is useless in your case as you have no Windows 8.1 image prepared by Acer in the recovery partition on your HDD, nor the Acer software distribution directory. So this app will simply duplicate built-in Windows' recovery functions.
Acer Cloud apps can be found here: https://www.cloud.acer.com/ops/downloads.
There is yet another important app on my HDD - Acer Color Engine - some sort of color profile loader or LUT loader. This app significantly improves the color reproduction by decreasing little yellow tint which is present on my LP173WF4-SPF1 display by default. However, this utility doesn't exist as separate downloadable/installable app. Maybe it is the component of some other app (Quick Access?), but most probably isn't.
Other Acer's apps (like Acer Care Center, Acer Explorer, Acer Video Player, etc.) are useless and meaningless.Last edited: Jan 25, 2015Nanomed likes this. -
Hello guys,
Some simple questions:
1- Should I use the Acer eColor/eDisplay Management knowing that it wasn't pre-installed on my laptop and in the website's description NVidia GTX860M is none existent? I read the comment of @BeemBoom about the Acer Color Management and searched for it on google and here's the link if anyone is interested in downloading it: Acer eDisplay Management
Direct Download Portrait Displays, Inc. - Acer eDisplay Management Support - Update
And is this the same with the one mentioned earlier?
2- I used the drivers provided by the moderator and they improved a little bit my download speed and range especially after I used channel 11 instead of 6. So Big Thanks for that. Now I checked acer's drivers and I don't know which one to download the NFA344 or NFA222 ? Or at least how can I know which one is for my laptop so I can download it?
Thank you guys in advance for your help. -
