15". Sure I do, my idle temps before are about 45-50, sometimes go lower. While browsing it is 50-60 and in heavy load i'm using coolpad with 600rpm which is lowest and temps are 70-75 without it goes above 80. Everything in CelsiusBTW I have i5-4210h.
I'm waiting on my new WiFi card, but maybe I do it earlier.
I had i5-4200M in Y510p and idle were about 25-30 and even in heavy load it was like 60.

@Mattthev
So you got 70-75° on your cpu with stock paste and in a 15" Case?
Can you please test without Coolpad?
Please do a 3dmark11 and cinebench 11.5 run and post your CPU / GPU temps
Thanks -
I'll try to post it tomorrow.
BTW did your latop make beep sound when it's not plugged to charger? It happend me sometimes seems like HDD, but SMART is ok. I had this HDD before and never do this beep sound.
Edit: Dafuq! Now I've got one faulty pixel in the middle of the display :/ This is my worse laptop in terms of build quality...Last edited: Feb 17, 2015 -
I got the 15.6" model not long ago, and I did a fresh install of windows 8.1. I've got pretty much every driver installed - but one device is still showing up as unknown in the device manager....
"PCI-Kommunikationscontroller (einfach)" is "PCI Simple Communications Controller" in german. Any idea what that is and what I need to install? -
Which processor do you have ordada?

(I am afraid I can't answer your question about this missing device) -

Hi. My collegue has a problem with his Acer : the keyboard does not work completely. There are several bips when booting , and then boot continues to windows. Some functions still work (like screen brightness), but the rest don't.
Anybody had the same problem ?
Edit : When rebooting in UEFI the keyboard works, but not in Legacy. It just happened today !
Edit 2 : Well, after converting his windows install to UEFI it stills bugs. Boot is longer than it should, and the computer is beeping several times. The keyboard works in the BIOS but not under windows :
Here is the error :
Code:Ce périphérique ne peut pas démarrer. (Code 10) (This device could not start) STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR

Can Somebody with Nitro 17" can confirm the Coolboost feature?
No matter if I turn it on or off, there is no difference in cooling.
What are your experiences? -
@kalle101
Same problem, no difference in temperatures or fan speed. -
Maybe someone here are using cooling pad? I'm thinking about Notepal u2 plus, but i'm not sure is it worth it? Some say that cooling pads aren't effective at all, but i think since with Nitro model, you can see both fans and even actual heatsink trough grills on the bottom, if fans would blow directly in there, it suppose to be effective?

what's the correct RAM type to buy to upgrade? From what I can gather from CPU-Z, there's a single 8 gig module inside, but not much else is displayed there

Hello all. Despite the throttling and wifi issues, I decided to take a chance on this laptop. I just ordered the new version;
VN7-591G-73Y5. According to Amazon this was just released 1/25/15. It comes with 802.11 A/C, i7-4720HQ, and nvidia 860m w/ 4gb. Hopefully the new wireless card will solve some problems, although I would guess the antennas are in the same place. I should have it tomorrow and will post preliminary results. Let me know if you want me to test or look at something specific. If it doesn't work, hopefully returning to amazon will be easy. -
Cool boost does nothing on my vn7-791g. However, based on the great work with rw-everything from someone in an earlier post I created some scripts to turn the fan up to max and back to auto. When I run the fanfull.bat script the fans become quite loud, much louder than I have ever heard them without it. The bottom of the laptop doesn't get so painfully hot, not sure how much of an effect it's having on the cpu temps. Hope this helps.
These files require that rweverything be installed, you should be able to google it. You'll need to change the paths to match your system. Following are 4 files, fanfull.bat, fanfull.rw, fanauto.bat, fanauto.rw.

I have had this laptop for an hour now. Good news is it came with an Intel Wireless-AC 7265 chip. I am getting great reception and ping right now, but will be testing it fully.
Unfortunately, the touchpad is pretty lousy; seems to have trouble making small movements. Could be the touchpad surface itself, but seems like it might be a driver issue too. Hopefully I will adapt to it somewhat, because it seems pretty bad right now. Currently it has Synaptics 18.1.22.2 drivers. That is what's on Acer's support page too. I tried using v17.0.19 from synaptics.com, but they didn't take. Any options here? I am also surprised by Win8.1 limited touchpad options. Shouldn't there at least be a speed setting?
EDIT: Running Prime95 shoots the CPU up to 98 Celsius within 30 seconds. Limiting processor to 99% seems to keep it around 90Last edited: Feb 24, 2015 -
A few more preliminary results. Laptop is on a desk, no cooling.
-Idles around 50°C
-Limiting processor to 99% (cores at 2.6ghz) Prime95 Small FFT test (most heat) it is around 90°C after a couple minutes
-Limiting processor to 90% (cores at 2.3ghz) Prime95 Small FFT test (most heat) it is around 85°C after a couple minutes
Haven't seen it throttle yet. I read this article:
http://www.pugetsystems.com/blog/2009/02/26/intel-core-i7-temperatures/
Seems to suggest the i7 can take a bit more heat than other processors, but this is still concerning. I agree with a previous post that it is unrealistic to think a laptop can run Prime95 without heating up a lot. Still, not sure what to make of this.
Also, still don't like the touchpad, but I'm getting a little better with it. -
Hi everyone, I ordered this model and it hasn't come yet. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314704
VN7-791G-7484
Is this a model with the 'crappy' atheros wifi card? If so... god damnit, I should have purchased the newer version. -

I'm having a really hard time finding a backpack for this laptop. All the "17" backpacks", are for real 17 inches. This laptop is almost 18, for that useless bezel. Has any of you found a good backpack?
-
-
Yeah, i have one of those. But i need a backpack.
-
What you suggest to clean this laptop with? Matte finish looks really nice but it's kinda fingerprints magnet.
-
I use a glass cleaner kit, applying the liquid to the little fabric.
-
Btw, was wrong with acer keyboards ? My old acer had funny "3" button , now this one has "z" which makes kind of clicky cracking sound and doesn't feel too stable. It seems like every acer laptop should have one strange button.
-
What are you guys using to monitor temps on your laptops?
-
I use HW monitor.
-
I bought this & this. Can't go wrong with both of these for the price. Wish I had bought them earlier since I was carrying my huge V17 haphazardly around campus for a month. The bezel on the V17 nitro is a clear engineering fail especially the bottom part. They could should correct this to make the laptop more functionally carryable.
I carry the smaller bag inside the bigger bag. The swissgear products are crap

The Condor 3 day backpack has a lot of functionality built in. You can remove the hip strap (its velcro) +1
If you're wondering about the color of the backpack, its black not grey
Another one of friends has the Condor backpack which he uses to carry his 17" Macbook proLast edited: Feb 28, 2015 -
@degoydegoy
Can you please describe your scripts again? I have rw installed and created these two .rw files.
But when I run the batch files, cmd goes up and nothing happened.
Did I miss something?

Greetings all…
I see that no one has checked in yet with new model VN7-791G-730V, I guess I will be the first.
I had been in the market to replace my aging HP dv6000 for a while now, and the initial versions of the v17 Nitro ticked all the boxes except for its inferior WiFi card, so I didn’t bite. When I saw that updated models were available on Newegg with wireless AC, that was enough for me… so I ordered one up! The unit arrived on Thursday at my work, and I immediately unpacked it and went to device manager to verify what the card was. Well I nearly flipped my lid, as it listed “Qualcomm Atheros” and I only saw wireless a/b/g/n modes in the device properties. I could find little information about the Atheros QCA61x4, except that it *might* be the same chip as used on the “Killer” 1525… so I calmed down a bit and waited to get home to verify (we only have wireless N at work).
Sure enough, I connected to my Linksys AC1200+ (6350) @ 866Mbps, and observed 50+MB/s file transfer speeds to my corporate home network in preparation for a reformat and clean install of Win 8.1 Pro. Afterwards, loading the acer drivers revealed “LITE-ON Wireless LAN_M 3rd WiFi 2x2 AC+ BT M.2 QCA NFA344_11.0.0.373_W81x64” though it is listed in Device Manager as “Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Wireless Network Adapter”. However… since the reinstall, it is still connecting @ 866Mbps but I’ve only been able to manage 20+MB/s transfer speeds. So I need to see what’s up with that.
The other niggler prior to ordering was trying to determine whether this model had a backlit keyboard or not. I was dismayed to find the specs on Newegg had the keyboard as “Non-Backlit”. Going to ACER’s own website to verify only led to more frustration… as NONE of the 17 inch models had “Backlit Keyboard” listed in the specs, while all of the 15 inch models specifically DID. Indeed… if you apply “Backit Keyboard” to the filter when selecting available models, only 15 inchers show up. I took a chance and ordered anyway due to actual user feedback… and why would they introduce a new model *without* the backlit keyboard?? Sure enough… nothing has changed in that regard, and happy the keyboard *does* have a backlight. That ACER itself adds to the confusion is inexplicable.
On another note… I don’t know why anyone would be unhappy with the brightness of this screen. I have it throttled back to half… lest I suffer retina burn! Certainly worlds better than my old HP…. -
UPDATE on WiFi speed issue:
Reading through this thread... I suspected it might have been due to tinkering with power management settings. I restored Windows "Balanced" mode to default settings, and was still only getting 20MB/s transfers. I had avoided reloading ACER's power management utility, so I did that, and voila... back to 50MB/s speeds. I have yet to determine what the setting is, but ACER's power management scheme obviously offers something over stock. Just an FYI...
I just verified that the Killer N1525 driver suite works with this new "LITE-ON" Atheros NFA344 adapter in the Acer. The setup will not run, as it does not discover "Killer" hardware in the machine. However, it you manually point it at the k1525w81 driver folder (using Device Manager), it loads and runs just fine. The setup for the bluetooth portion runs and loads without issue after that.
*Note: After loading the new driver, my wireless AC connection dropped and became un-visible... as it defaulted to a lesser mode (01 - 11 b). I switched it to "12 - 11 a/b/g/n/ac" and everything immediately came back... without modifying the connection properties. Incidentally, the previous driver did not have a specific ac mode listed, only a/b/g/n... which is what caused my initial confusion as to whether this was an AC adapter or not.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 1, 2015 -
I installed an SSD and more RAM on my VN7-571G. Mainboard layout looked different from what I found online, but similar enough. M.2 slot is at the bottom, and nicely enough Acer put in a single 8GB module
I used Paragon to clone the HDD to the SSD, then deleted the HDD partitions, and it seems to work, rather straight forward. I ran CrystalMark on it, and the numbers look good to me (total SSD noob), only the '4K queue depth 1' is rather low. Anyone mind interpreting the attached screenshot, is there some issue with how I cloned or does it look fine? To be honest it feels a bit less snappy than my friends 840 EVO, but then again that one is powered by a desktop i7 quadcore, whereas I only run on dual core ULV. The SSD I bought is a 250 gig Crucial MX200Attached Files:

acer just release patch to improve wireless performance but i can not run it.anyone know how to run it?

. Anyway a half of an inch is missing to be perfect.

I afraid it is a Superfish like in lenovo!

Guys, are you serious? It works, it just opens and closes pretty quickly automatically, but it does what it suppose to (changes your power settings). Actually i think just disable power saving on wireless adapter, one simple step you can do by yourself, i was mad because it made my power config default, which i was already tweaked to my taste. Nevermind, did that again. But honestly i don't think that's gonna really improve anything, i think most users here have already done that.

Hey guys, I’m from Melbourne and just bought a V17 nitro that’s causing me some grief. It’s actually my second unit as the first was exchanged due to the same problem in addition to other issues. Basically the problem is that I can’t open Acer Recovery Management to create a recovery backup as per the user manual (nothing happens once I allow the program to access the computer). So I called Acer Tech Support to report the issue as I really don’t want to have to return it for a refund (as I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near the same specs for the price I paid in another lappy).
I was told to do a reset and advised it would take 1-2 hours. After 2 hours plus however it had only completed 13% of the reset so I called Acer again. This time I was told that it could actually take up to 7 hours (however at the rate mine is going at it will be something like 20 hours)!! So now I am waiting for the reset to complete to see if that fixes my problem. The rep was quite apologetic and upfront- he told me that it’s something he’s come across before and that a reset fixes it in about 50% of cases, otherwise Acer have to reinstall the OS or fix the partitions, or some other mumbo jumbo I didn’t understand.
My question is (seeing as I am not keen on getting a refund or having to repair a brand new notebook), is this a problem any of you guys have come across or do you know how I can fix it myself?? Now keep in mind my tech abilities are limited but I can follow instructions if there is a guide somewhere on resolving this. I’m fairly certain a reset won’t fix it given it’s the second time I’ve had this problem on the same model notebook. And I can’t get another exchange as there is no more stock.
The model I have is the VN7-791G-70ST. I paid $1,600 AUD, which works out roughly to be $1,240 USD or €1,100. The specs are i7-4710HQ, 16GB RAM, GTX 850M GPU, 256GB SSD, 2 TB HDD, Full HD 17.3” screen, Blu-ray writer etc..
Thanks in advance. -
Oh and another thing, how are the pixels on your screens? My first v17 had 1 blown pixel in the middle of the screen and this one has 1 stuck pixel at the bottom which isn’t so obvious and which I think I can live with..
-
UPDATE:
Well the reset has completed now (about 6-7 hours like Acer said), but unfortunately it has not fixed my problem accessing the Acer Recovery Management program. It does appear to have fixed my stuck pixel however so at least I am pleased about that! At this stage I am thinking that I will just call Acer tomorrow and demand that they send me recovery media for the notebook. That is, unless any of you guys think that my problem may not just be restricted to this particular program and could be indicative of wider problems?? Are there any sort of diagnostics I can run to check?? I will post back tomorrow with what the Acer tech has to say. They have already offered to extend my warranty by 3 months for the trouble but I am probably going to buy extended warranty anyway so I’m not sure how that will work. Cheers -
Well, if i'm right, there is lots of software for that. My favorit are Acronis. But if you don't feel comfortable with 3rd-party software, windows has built-in tool for that. Even more so, if you didn't tweak your windows settings, windows are automatically making restore points for that. Now let's get this straight here - personally i only use Acronis program, because that's my favorite way of restoring OS in boot mode (i.e. it works if your laptop fails to load, some other methods do not) and i don't need to worry about my license. Now in your case, i don't know which method or program would be best, you can definitely use same programs with legal windows, it just may (or may not) include some additional work to do, i don't know. But what i'm saying, you are NOT restricted by that stupid acer program, who doesn't work hell knows why.
