So I recently purchased Acer Aspire V15 Nitro - Black Edition with the 4710HQ, 860M, 15` screen. And of course after I installed the OS, I wanted to test it on some games. The first one in mind was Diablo 3, which is not that demanding game. Nevertheless I really wanted to see how it looks on almost max settings. So I put it on all HIGH, 1920x1080 and was amazed how bad the FPS was - 20-40 FPS. So I said to myself, well it's a laptop, you can't expect something great from it. So I googled to see how the other owners of the same laptop are running the same game on the same HIGH settings, and they were from 70-120 FPS. So I started searching what is causing the low FPS. At first I thought that the laptop is using the integraded graphics card over the 860M. But after some tests I determined that this wasn't the problem. The laptop felt like it didn't want to try harder for running the games smoother - really low temperatures, silent. So I started to test the other components. The first one was the CPU. And I noticed that it only runs on 8x multiplier - 800MHz. And no matter what application I ran it was the same consistent frequency. So I googled the problem and found out that others have the same issue. Lots of suggestions - from BIOS settings (which in my case didn't help at all because there is no Advanced tab in the BIOS) to changing the power options (no luck again). The only thing that helped me was this software - ThrottleStop, from which you can disable the option - BD PROCHOT. And what a surprise - the CPU was running fine again. So I ran some test (Prime95) with the newly configurated CPU. The temps were really high (90-95C). So I have some concerns - Are those temperatures fine or do I have to worry about them? Is it okay that I disabled that BD PROCHOT which is causing the CPU to throttle when overheats? Is there any way to fix this issue, with the constant 8x multiplier, without disabling this BD PROCHOT? And is it just me, or the fans are really silent? If someone has the same or similar issues and know a way to fix it, please share. Thanks in advance.

Hey, thanks for your reply siluetaz. Yes, that’s what I want- a backup to restore my notebook from if something goes wrong (I used the recovery media every couple months with my old HP notebook when it started slowing down which is why this matters to me). I don’t have much tech knowledge so using other programs and methods is something I would rather avoid- I’d be much happier if the Acer Recovery Program just worked like it was supposed to!

I called Acer Tech Support and they advised they would need to book my notebook in for repair to have the OS re-imaged. I’m not too pleased about having a brand new laptop repaired but I’m hoping that it sorts out my problem and I can put this behind me and start enjoying using it. At least they have extended my warranty and are providing a next business day priority service which is usually an extra cost.

Will post back once I receive it. Cheers

So i changed the thermal paste with my heatsink and was getting between 90-94 degrees too. It is normal to have those temperatures. But what i do is i turn off Turbo Boost Mode by going to power options>edit plans>Advanced and under processor power management change the maximum processor state to 99%. Do this for all your plans. This way it never goes to a 100% and it will bring your temperatures down to reasonable temperatures by 10 degrees. But it will stop overclocking the CPU and giving u maximum performance but it is still just as good. I don't know why you had these initial problems because i had zero. You should always have it plugged in, by the way, for maximum performance. Anytime it runs on battery it defaults to low performance maximum battery state. You should also buy Cooler Master Slim Cooling Pad it is great at keeping ur laptop cool while giving you a nice little podium for your laptop which i personally like. Performance laptops are meant to be on a desk connected to power they run hot because performance parts are such.

    UPDATE:

I had an issue with appropriate packaging in which to ship the notebook to the repair centre so Acer have now agreed to arrange an on-site repair and advised I will also have my hard drive replaced. I just have to wait for the part to be sent to the local technician. Shouldn’t take more than a couple days so I’ll post back then.

Hi, I have a question, does the 17 inch version with the i5-4210h and GTX 850 have the same thermal issues? Could any one owning this version post your temps here after some stress testing? I'm not able to read all the 76 pages of this thread so I'm sorry if some one already did this.

Do you have ssd in you laptop? If you don't, i would strongly advice you to ask them to install one for you. It's a day and night difference having ssd vs no with this laptop. Also, with ssd you don't need to worry 'bout slow down after couple of months. That mostly happens because of fragmentation in hdd, ssd doesn't have that problem.

I would say, stop worry about those temperatures, they are ok. I7 CPU can take 100c at which it should start trottle. 90-94c is damn hot, but i'm pretty sure this CPU can take it. I'm getting these temperatures sometimes playing as well, i don't think that limiting performance computer performance is smart, because you bought it because of it's performance, ain't you ?

    Hi all!
I'm about to buy a vn7-571g, and I've been reading that a lot of you have problems with the wifi adapter of this model. Mine will be of a very new batch, since it comes with an i5-5200u and a Geforce 940m.
Has anyone have any experience with these new batches? Have they changed the wifi adapter (it's an ac capable one according to the specs)? Or, will I have to change the adapter to an Intel (or a Killer) one to get acceptable wifi performance? Thanks!

Well, I so have the 791G, but even with the i7 and the 860M, I don't have any temp-problems. Even while gaming (World of Tanks, very demanding for CPU and GPU as well), my temps only climb to 85°C on the CPU, haven't checked the GPU yet.

I believe you check your temperatures wrong way, i.e. look at real time numbers, probably when alt+tab your game ? If you'll run some log or use program which logs highest temperatures as well as live numbers, i can guarantee you'd see temperatures as high as 95 or even 97 c, although that's just fine with this CPU anyway.

And if this not a case, then:

    1) You live in Alaska
    2) Your CPU is somehow limited and doesn't go into Turbo Boost mode
    3) It's an X Files case and i'm calling agent Fox Mulder...

I'm in the same situation as SCARed, no throttling, FPS are as they should and cpu reaches about 85º max on any high demanding game, living in the south of Europe, ambient about 20º. I think there are some manufacturing variations on the quality of the thermal paste installation as some are experiencing high temps with the same laptops. Also the 17' has better cooling as what i am reading.

Install Core Temp program, play any of your games for a while and take a screenshot of Core Temp window. Would be very interesting to see.

I'm calling agent Fox Mulder, it's an X Files case... No, actually i have read about tolerances in making CPU's, i believe it was said in article that difference in temperatures between ideal and not so ideal but still passable CPU could be about 10, maybe even 15 C. Just wasn't convinced till i saw this. Thank you. Minimal temperatures are very low as well, is your laptop normally idles like that or it was just turned on? You are indeed lucky, although everybody else including myself are still just fine with higher temperatures. For instance mine shows max temperatures as:

    96
    97
    95
    90

With the identical CPU and VN7-791g version. I've played nba2k15 for a while.

I am idling at mid 40s right now with no use, I really don't know how I had those low temps because I remember downloading the app and installing it just before launching it, more than enough to ramp it up a little.

Cpu will start throttling at 95ºC, it prevents it from reaching 100 so you wont never get temps higher than yours, I would consider applying new thermal paste if you know what you are doing. Check intel extreme tuning utility and keep it open to check the max % throttling after a gaming period.

managed to get Acer to swap my Atheros card to an Intel AC 7265. The wifi is great. However the service centre neglected to configure the bluetooth drivers. So I am having problems trying to get the blueetooth drivers and devices detected (is not visible in my device manager). Not too keen to send it in again (3rd time) . Any tips i can try? Restarting, rerunning the acer package, trying to detect new devices were all unsuccessful.

It doesn't update the bios, it gets stuck and after 10 minutes had to reboot. Anything changed, tried for a second time, running as administrator, any clues?

Edit: I now swaped back the caddy I was using to the stock br-reader and now works fine, don't know if that was the cause but nevermind, bios looks identical, no new features or options.

Not sure if that particular FAQ has always been up. However, two patches are now available for download which claim to address this issue.

I still haven't tested it thoroughly, but Wi-Fi performance may actually have improved. I'm using my laptop at the exact same spot as usual, and am getting 3-4 bars of signal, as opposed to 1-2. I can also stream 1080p60 videos from Youtube without any stuttering. Didn't used to.

Give it a go and see if it helps.

As I already wrote a couple of posts back my V15 (5200u + 850m ) with Qualcom card doesn't seem to be affected with wifi issues: signal is stable and I always get 5 out of 5 bars.

Although i was very sceptic at first, i should say that acer's patches really improves WiFi signal. There's two right now. I have installed them both, started with older one. I also have configured my power plan settings manually afterwards just because those patches mess with them and make changes that i don't like. So i thought after i set everything what i want back to my liking, my WiFi will be as it was, but no, it's better. Give it a try, guys!
Besides, any ideas what's updated in new BIOS version? I've installed new one, but don't have any idea about changes, probably just some minor bugs ? Shall i say, i also only have tested my WiFi after flashing BIOS as well, not sure if that can be related, but just in case. :)

I have encounter massive Problems with my V15. Since the Last Windows Update, I got system freezes if i move my mouse ever 1-10 sekunds. Everything runs fine as long as i'm not moving my mouse verything runs fantastic. Bute the moment i move it ist start freezing for about 1-2 milisec. If i switch the usb port or restart, I got for arround 10-20 min tilll it starts again. I use a logitech wirreless mouse if unifying. Some guy at a forum said it was cause of the last windows update and he had encountered the same problems. But It seems reinstalling the audio driver helped him. But it didn't help me and he doesn't answer. So maybe someone here has an idea wtf is going on and how i can fix this. Cause im kinda desperate right now.

I just got the V15 Black Edition, but the clickpad seems to have a little give/wobble? I've had this type of buttonless clickpad in the past, but I don't remember being able to push lightly and get a sound without actually clicking.
Is my model defective, or is that just how the clickpad is designed? And by push slightly I really do mean slightly. I push lightly and there's a slight clicking sound, but it doesn't register a click, pressing a little harder makes the real clicking sound and the click is registered. It's a little distracting since a normal tap or accidentally touch makes a fair bit of noise. I also noticed it doesn't really happen on the right side of the mouse as much as the left.

I've replace Atheros wifi card with Intel 7260 AC and it's better. But still I have low wifi signal. I get stronger signal with this little USB wifi
    http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v1/...icro-font-b-Adapter-b-font-Dongle-802-11n.jpg
But when I'm near to router I can get full speed, but there is an issue sometimes ping goes for a while up like 600ms and then goes down again. When I ping router I get about 3-5ms average with that micro USB WIFI I have 2-3ms. So it must be antennas problem as well. Did anyone try replace them? I ordered some 3dbi, but then I realize they are to short :( never mind I'll try it. I can't find any good dual band antennas :(

@Mattthev There is no problem with antennas, only with antenna placement. You'd be wasting your time replacing them - it's just a small piece of metal. There are hardly better and worse pieces of metal ;)

Ping issue is most likely related to U-APSD function of Intel 7260. Go to device manager, enter card's properties, choose second tab with advanced driver settings and disable U-APSD

    @downloads Oh ok :(
The U-APSD was disabled by default. But I've made some research and it's much better now. I've disabled power saving in device manager also in power settings set to max power in wirelles settings also PCI-E. Roaming set to lowest. They also matter on WiFi B/G/N mixed is not good for this card only N is a way better. But still almost every mobile phone and micro USB wifi has stronger signal.

I can't cancel order, so I will at least try.

Hi, I have the V7-591G and I tried to install the Killer N1525 wireless card to replace the Atheros card and the Crucial M500.

I clean installed W8.1 on the SSD and the first thing I do is to install the latest Killer Suite.
After installing the driver, my wifi toggle seems to be greyed out and "OFF".

    I tried to:
    1. Install the earlier version of Killer Suite and the pure driver
    2. Go to BIOS and F9(load default)
    3. Reinstall windows
    4. Press Fn+F3 (Wifi button on keyboard)
    5. Restart the PC several times

All the methods above also do not solve the problem.
Is there anything that I did wrongly?

I reinstalled the Atheros wireless card back and installed the driver and it works but a very low signal level.

Origial windows driver? You mean when I'm using the old HDD?
I make the Windows 8.1 USB Installation Media using the tool from Mircrosoft website.
I tried to reinstall Windows but still no luck.

I downloaded the latest Killer Suite and reinstall and restart my PC several times but still no luck.

    The step I always do:
    1. Reinstall windows
    2. After windows is installed, I install the Killer Suite.

My wifi icon change from no device to become no wifi connection with the wifi toggle "OFF" and greyed out. I am not sure how to insert picture here.

I'm mean built in driver in Windows. That automatic installed drivers for new devices. I had some chinese USB wifi and the windows driver work better than one download from manufacture site.

But I think it could be faulty WiFi card.

Guess it's not faulty wifi because it is able to detect the card correctly. The problem is after installing the toggle grey out but still appear in decide manager. Some software problem? Maybe bios setting?

After testing several methods to fix the wifi, it appears that everytime after i sleep and wake my computer, the wifi will be working perfectly. But, after I shut down or restart my PC, the wifi toggle will become OFF and greyed out again. Any idea on what's the problem?

I send my acer to repair center in Wroclaw, POLAND.

The repair issues with wifi. Now its preety good Atheros 222. They replace same cables near RAM slots and do something with the card.
    Now its like 2.5x faster than before. 3 walls aroud 10meters and 80-90Mbits - 1 wall 3meters and 110-120Mbits - 120Mbits is my max

    15 days - terrible days ;-)
whats more they told me that they "clean laptop" and you know what ? The temps are now also better, in idle core temps are like 40-45, before was like 45-55 but still its throttle instress.

I just cut down the max process stat to 99% and no more throtting and everything is cold and quiet. Coz of that i think i5 is better choise.

    My specs are
    i7
    16gb ram
    gtx860
    atheros wb222
    128 SSD m.2 + stock 1TB

@adrkra Awesome! I bought Arctic MX4 and after semester I'll want to apply it but know I think I will send it them my laptop too :D What exactly you want for them to do? I really need to replace antennas because even with Intel 7260 AC card the signal is very poor :(

I have same temps like you had. i5 is overheating too :D even with coolpad :D also use 99% for not overheating. But it sometimes reset the settings...

I don't have V17 but is that USB 3.0? Try reinstall driver. Are they enabled in BIOS?
