It worked in windows 8.1 and only after the upgrade to win 10 it stopped working.

For those of you looking for the dolby digital app, try installing the win 8.1 driver from acer website, I think that's what I did (can't be sure), and its working.

Are the 15" Nitro V's typically hot? I have the Skylake / 960m version and wow after an hour of playing Fallout it was hot. Fans were pretty loud. Is it warranty voiding to re-paste CPU / GPU? Is there a manual fan control?
The Nitro V is my 'on the go' machine that I take with me as it's smaller, so I'm not devastated about the heat, but I would like to cool it down if I'm able.

@Templesa It's not warranty-voiding to re-paste as long as you don't break anything while doing so. If something unrelated breaks down later on, they will not refuse to repair it just because you've opened the laptop.
And yes, Nitros get pretty hot.

    Hi there,
I brought the Acer VN7-792G a week today and am having major issues with the CPU overheating when gaming.
I've tried several games; Battlefield Hardline, Rocket League, Sonic Racing and PES and all somehow make the cpu reach around 90c, sometimes higher.
I have changed everything from in game detail levels, to closing applications in the background and still nothing seems to stop such high temperatures

I've read through afew posts on here and it seems it's a Acer issue with the cooling fan, is this correct? If so what can I do? Has i've spent £800 on a laptop and can't play any games - even games which are 3 or 4 years old struggle with major throttling from overheating. .

I have those same temperatures too, I play Battlefield 4, sometimes 10 hours straight, with absolutely no problem whatsoever.

Those temperatures are in the core of CPU And GPU, but the notebook remain pretty cool.

If I understand correctly, CPU can easily handle temperatures up to 100. And yes I have around 90c on Nitro too.

Did you reinstalled drivers from Acer web site or did you leave drivers that Windows 10 found? Cheers!

I disable turbo boost on the CPU by limiting it to 99% max power in "power options" it remains at 2597Mhz and 75C

another help would be using the Intel XTU program and undervolt the CPU a bit. my 791G works fine with -60 mV and this lowers temps while gaming roughly by 5 degrees.

it's totally simple and does not harm your NB at all. the absolutly worst that can happen is a bluescreen, which causes the NB to reboot with standard voltages.

What @SCARed wrote is absolutely true - undervolting does lower temperatures, DOES NOT lower performance and has no risk attached to the procedure - the worst thing that can happen if you overdo it is the notebook will become unstable under load and will either reboot or hang.
Mind you - you have to find the sweet spot for yours - just because someone else's notebook works fine with certain lowered voltage does not mean your CPU will handle it as well (although yours can also work fine even more undervolted).

Basically you have to experiment with it and test in under full load to confirm it's stable until you find the limit of your CPU.

no it's time for me to ask a question: I own my VN7-791G with a BR-drive for now almost one year, but never tried to actually watch a BR before. last week I got a movie from a friend, only to find out, that my PowerDVD Mediaplayer seems to have some issues. the program refuses to play the BR and even normal DVDs, which I tried afterwards. it keeps claiming, I need some sort of upgrade to watch clips. I did an update, but nothing changed.

watching DVDs via VLC works without problems, so it can't be a problem with the drive itself. after quite some searching I have found a free BR-player ( http://www.leawo.com/blu-ray-player/) and the BR worked like a charm.

still my problem remains: what is wrong with the PowerDVD 12-version, Acer included with the Nitro? is it something I might have caused or are other experiencing similar problems? I even deinstalled the software bundle and reinstalled it via recovery - without any effect.

    Hi everybody!
Sorry for my english, but i'm an Italian student (i'm 18).
I want to share my experience with you. I bought Nitro VN7 591g. I had some issues with WiFi. So i decided to change the wifi card (i replaced the atheros with an Intel 7265 m.2).
I also did some measure with the old card and with the new one (using inSSIDer). Here the results (measuring rssi)
10cm close to router: -31 (Atheros) -22 (Intel)
    In my room -60 (a) -50 (i)
    In my living room -62 (a) -50 (i)
    Downstairs -72 (a) -60 (i).
The connection is not perfect but now works very well

    1. Intel XTU and try -100mV
    2. ThrottleStop 8.00 (find latest beta) and disable TurboBoost
    3. some kind of simplest cooling pad, just to make it easier for the fans to suck cooler air

With these, you should be fine

Just picked up a 592g edition from Microcenter the other day. I love the build and feel and size of the laptop. I need something portable for the road that can handle some FPS games.

I am highly disappointed by the cooling system however. I tried undercoating the CPU by -75mV. I disabled turbo and locked the CPU to base 2.6ghz X4. I forced full force fans with the rw everything trick.

I did manage to get the CPU to stay around 70-75C with this but the GPU still hit 88-90C. This is unacceptable for a lower tdp Maxwell chip.

Looks like it will be going back to microcenter unless there is a way to unlock the vbios and allow me to undervolt that GPU. As it stands it's just way too much work to cool it and this is with a brand new laptop with new fans. New paste and little or no dust.

    Any other ideas??

Is this available in the US? If so is it configurable on the Acer website? I want to see if it comes with a 4k screen, no dvd and a 500 GB 7200RPM drive along with a M.2 PCIe drive.

First I stayed with the drivers of Windows 10 because everything just worked.

Because my wireless network card started loosing its connection I installed from Acer:
Bluetooth Intel Stuurprogramma voor Bluetooth 17.1.1529.1620
Wireless LAN Intel Stuurprogramma voor draadloos-netwerk 18.12.0.3

To get Dolby Digital Plus back I installed from Acer:
Audio Realtek Stuurprogramma voor audio 6.0.1.7553
I had to install it twice before Dolby was installed along the Realtek drivers.

    Furthermore I installed from Acer:
    Power Acer Power Management 7.00.8109
Quick Access Acer Quick Access Applicatie 2.00.3006
To get CoolBoost and DustDefender back.

Everything is working stable and without any problems for me now.

Already returned and got the Dell with 4gb 960m and i5 6300hq quad. Temps are great with no adjustments and even better win a slight CPU undervolt. Runs mid 60s CPU and GPU on auto fans and I can now overclock the GPU +135/200mhz and never experience any throttling.

For $759 on Amazon it was a steal!

Keyboard is fine, the Acer had a better soft touch keyboard with a bit more travel in the keys it felt like, but this keyboard is your run of the mill chiclet style keyboard. I am so used to my mechanical keyboard for my desktop at home, but I find this keyboard to be pretty darn good. Little to no flex unless pressed down very firmly in the middle. They keys are plastic but a softer touch/rubberized plastic. Its backlit white, with two levels and like the Acer the lighting turns off when the keyboard is idle for too long.

I just had the GPU overclocked playing Rainbow Six Seige beta and the temps were excellent. +135mhz core and +300mhz memory and GPU maxed out at 70C with CPU max temps of 68C. Thats about 20C cooler on the GPU compared to the stock Acer GPU. Fan was audible but very quiet.

Anyways since this thread is Acer Nitro series, just PM me if you want any other information. But IMO if you can deal with a slightly larger laptop, the Dell is a phenomenal deal at this price point.

Amazing - I actually don't think the keyboard is that good, but maybe you are more subtle with the fingers than I, because my fingers really hurt when typing.. I guess you look at the laptop with loving eyes, unlike me (-:
Yes, temps and the cooling is very good for this price + battery
I know this is a VN thread, but that's why it's important

Hi guys I really need help,
    I have a V17 nitro with a 860m
I finally received my notification to update to windows 10, which I did saturday.
after the update everything was fine, until I started gaming.
I have had multiple crashes and BSOD since.
mostly i have the "Nvidia Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" error.
I also had "ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT" in GTA V and "Fatal Error: Direct3D An error occured in the Direct3D device" in USF4
most BSOD occurs playing SFIV, Street fighter X tekken , USF4 and then i have these messages:
    VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR
    VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL

Nvidia drivers are up to date, I have tried to reinstall games but it doesn't help.
I have tried to install older nvidia drivers from from the acer website but it didn't help either.
All the games ran perfectly on Windows 8.1.
I really don't know what to do, I'm thinking about going back to Windows 8.1.
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Thanks

start from removing both Intel and NV drivers completely - do it with the DDU freeware. Then, install the latest drivers for both, Intel first. Let us know how it goes

Are you on the latest build 10586.14 ? (You can check run and type winver).

It seems that the latest Cumulative Update (KB3120677) solves those problems (did it for me).

many thanks ! it almost solved all my problems !
    here's what I did :
last night, i removed all drivers with DDU, then installed Intel and Nvidia drivers from the acer website. result : every game runs fine.
this morning, removed those drivers with DDU and installed latest Intel and Nvidia drivers (359.00). result : "nvidia display driver not responding" error is back when playing games...
so then I left the latest Intel driver, removed Nvidia driver 359.00 with DDU and installed back Nvidia driver from Acer website ( 353.54 ). result : every game runs fine again. I have to run Street fighter games (SF4, USF4, SFxTekken ) in compatibility mode though ( win 8 works ) because there's a small bug when turning on and off V-Sync ( game kinda hangs and I have to go back to the desktop and back to the game again to make it work (or not ).
So I really think there's a problem with this 359.00 driver and windows 10, for me at last. I'm gonna try to test more recent drivers than the one I have right now, we'll see.

this morning I checked, i'm on the latest build but I still had Nvidia display driver errors with 359.00 driver.

I just installed driver 358.91 and every games run perfectly.

Also, I was wondering how do you turn off Keyboard Backlight permanently ? I'm tired of pressing Fn+F9 after each reboot or waking up from sleep. sorry if it has been asked before.

There is a known problem with latest win 10 nvidia driver and 860M (should also applied to 960M, not sure). Last stable driver for these GPU is 355.98.
Nvidia is aware of the problem and is working on fixing it.

If it concerns 860M than it must also concern 960M as it's the same card/core (with some factory OC).

All of a sudden, my Nitro V17 keyboard registered every keystroke as double. Took me a while to figure out that I could use the on screen keyboard to log in. Everything I type on the physical keyboard would be like "hheelloo tthhiiss mmeesssseedd uupp" Even the spaces, backspaces, etc.. are doubled. I even booted into BIOS and the arrow keys to move around the menu are doubled. I hope this is not a hardware issue... :(

You mean like open up the laptop? Hmmm I will probably try calling Acer service first.. since I think it is still under the 1 year warranty? I will try to find an usb keyboard to plug in and see if it is okay. It is kind of strange the keyboard will suddenly do this... never seen it on any keyboard before..

    Thanks!

Like Daf Paolo said, it seemstobe a connector issue. Opening it up and fixing it yourself is the fastest way. If you're afraid/don't have the proper tools/skills to do it,contact acer support. But it will take one or two weeks.

OK, I think I have finally cracked it......buttery smooth games with an overclocked GPU and no additional cooling.

    1) Strip down and clean up thermal paste and replace with something better (MX-4 that I used, arctic silver etc). This significantly reduces heat build up. I can't get the GPU over 75 deg C even clocked at +135mhz on the core, and +375mhz on the memory (equates to 4~5fps on Kombustor via afterburner)! My build was a mess with Acer using a pre-applied patch rather than a blob, so the paste cover the entire heatsink and chip and a few mm thick, turning ut into a big lump 'o' heat.

    2) Download XTU (Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility), and create profile with the CPU dynamic voltage underclocked by -80mV. -100 and -90 blue screened for me, but even -80 reduced CPU temp by 5 deg C. As long as your PC is stable, it will automatically set the new voltages on startup.

    3) This was the big one for me. Download CrystalDiskInfo, and go to Functions, advanced features, AAM/APM control and disable the Advanced Power Management.
It seems the WD Blue 1TB data drive has an inbuilt power-saving feature that spins down the drive after 15-20 seconds. If you have an M2-SSD (I have the 60gb lite-on), and use this drive for games, they load fine, but after 20 seconds the drive spins down (WD power management 'feature'). When you are moving round a game and dynamically loading and if the drive's not used for 15-20 seconds it spins down, then has to spin up and causes a freeze for 2-3 seconds as the bus is starved of data (usually audio files) and is bloomin annoying. Downside is more power use, and case under your right palm will be warm as the drive is generating heat. The windows power setting then takes over then (ie 15 min).

I'm going to experiment on the settings to see if there is a better setting, but for now, I can play Tomb Raider in Ultimate with TressFX hair, at 1080p, 40fps with the GPU at 70-80 deg and the CPU between 80 and 90 deg.

No throttling, no lag spike, nothing. I'll see what else I can optimise.....

    Done.

    Edit - additional notes

    1) CPU is set to 100% on all profiles

    2) If I could overclock more than +135 mhz on the core, I'm sure it would, but that's the hard limit.

    3) You could put the pagefile on D: it would keep accesing it and force the drive not to spin-down.

    4) The latest drive update from Nvidia gives blue screens galore for VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR and VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL. Known last stable driver for the 860M / 960M 355.98. (see notebookreview new-acer-aspire-v-nitro-series)

    5) On a side note, ACER you crippled these laptops. The fans can go much higher and are only set to around 60% duty for noise lowering. Either patch this, or release a profile application so we can adjust them, these are gaming spec Black Editions!

Proof of the pudding....laptop is a Aspire Nitro Black VN7-591G-56JG

Stress test. This is HeavyLoad runnig 100% on all cores and the integrated graphics, and Kombustor stressing the GPU.
Beyond worst case scenario, forcing the CPU uo 92 degress, but still no throttle after more than 5 min. Even games don't do this.

@BishBashBozzer Good results however "more than 5 minutes" is not relevant in any way. Make it at east half an hour if it's meant to be a confirmation.

Been playing Borderlands 2 for the past 3 hours.....not a glitch, seems stable to me.

Edit: Took your advise and tried 30 min, still no issues.

On a side note, the benchmarks were overkill, and way past anything the laptop would be doing in real life. Not even the most taxing games max out every core for continued periods and set the GPU into a high utilisation loop.
