Thanks, installed it without actually knowing what it does, also installed the Lan driver from the acer site since it newer than what was installed by win 10. The only problem right now that I encountered is that I cant make control the Screen using Fn + left/ FN + right. Any idea?

What do you mean by controlling the screen? You mean the brightness?

haha, thats exactly what I mean, controlling the screen brightness. Sorry must have accidentally deleted the word brightness or something. Should have written "The only problem right now that I encountered is that I cant dim the screen using Fn + left/ FN + right. Any idea?"

Hey guys , owner of a v17 . I notice when just doing basic browsing, my cpu temp is around 50 , when my charger is in. If my charger is not in, ts hovers around 44. 5 degree difference , is this what you guys are experiencing as well ?

hi guys, i seemed to be having better scores with intel XTU benchmarking, although i did add another 8 gb ram and 120 ssd as boot drive so that may be reason and not the fact i upgraded to windows 10. I have noticed notable drop in temperatures with intel XTU stress test as well, however i also noticed that only one core is active while running the stress test, was it like that when it was still in windows 8.1? Or is there an option to run all cores during the stress test?

From the pictures of the updated V15 nitro, they seem to have changed the layout of some of the USB card and SD card.
There is a USB 2.0 port and the SD card port on the left side of the laptop now. So you can connect the mouse to the left side instead of the right side which I didn't like before.
Use to be no ports on the left side of the laptop I think and the SD card port was in the front of the laptop which only allowed the card to be put in about half way.
Also the SD card port before had this cover that was really hard to remove.
I think it was also 3 USB 3.0 ports on the right side, now it looks like USB 3.0, USB 3.1-Type C and USB 3.0 on the right side?

Also hope the 4k version comes out soon and at the same price as the version before. Looking at amazon, the 4k version might start at $1799, 300 more than the older version.

Yes indeed, you are right. USB and SD have been moved to the left side as well as headphone jack. That said there should still be 3 USB ports on the right side - 2xUSB 3.0 and 1xUSB 3.1 gen2 with Thunderbolt 3.

Other changes worth mentioning - 802.11 ac Wi-Fi seems to come as standard and DDR3 RAM is being replaced with DDR4.

This doesn't seem to be merely a refresh though - motherboard most likely had to be redesigned completely which brings up the question of cooling system - I wonder if it was upgraded as well.

    I have a question.

I just got an Aspire Nitro V Friday ( VN7-571G-7561).

It has the i7-5500U and after I got it, I noticed while gaming it would get hot. Playing Skyrim it would hit 95c on both cores. I decided to tear into it and re-paste the CPU and GTX 950. Was really easy to get apart and get the motherboard out, no issue, probably took 10 minutes. I also put my SSD in it.

Now when playing Skyrim the CPU will hit 88-89c on one core and 92c on the other. This is pretty warm. If I play a game like Banished, It will hit 71c on both cores.

I have the back of the laptop propped up where the air inlet is located. This is a single fan model. Should I be worried or is this CPU made to run hot? With a 15W TDP, I would think it would run cool. At idle it is great, 37-41c.

I have to say, I wanted a laptop I could game on and this is replacing a laptop with an i7-4810m and this is every bit as quick during daily stuff, very impressed with the Broadwell CPU in that regard.

    Thanks for any help.

Drivers seems working fine but I have some issues with Acer Apps on Windows 10 clean install. There is no CoolBoost and DustDefender in Acer Quick Access and Dolby app does not work for me too. I am actually thinking to go back to Windows 8.1 haha

    Running on V15 - VN7-591G-70FN

Would be interesting to know how many users stay with 8.1 and how many went for Windows 10 upgrade / clean install.

AFAIK, the 591G does NOT support DustDefender, it wasn't working with Win 8.1 either. same should go for CoolBoost, but there I am not sure. Dolby App is something I have to check, didn't realize this at all till now.

    I own a 791G from end of '14 (i7-4710, 860M, 1 TB HDD +128GB SSD, 8 GB RAM).

I am struggeling myself if to update or not for quite some time. and I would only do a upgrade, no clean install.

    Tomorrow I'll get the Aspire V15 Nitro (6700HQ, 8GB DDR4, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, GTX 960M 4GB). Will swap the SSD for a Samsung 850 EVO 256GB probably pretty soon.
You can ask me questions about this model.

Hi there! Would very much like to know about temperature/throttling of the cpu and gpu. If you could conduct a stress test and see if you could provoke throttling that would be awesome! Can't find that kind of test anywhere even though the laptop's been out for a few weeks now..

    Thanks!

How should I test the throttling? - don't worry, I can do anything easily, just never tested this myself (never cared).

Great! I've actually never done that kind of test my self either (though I've ha a laptop with throttling cpu and say never again). Anyway Intel has a program called "Intel extreme tuning utility" witch seems easy to handle and good for monitoring temps and detecting throttling. Then you just need to make sure to stress the cpu for 10-20min and analyze what happens with temp and cpu frequency. To stress test you can use prime95 (cpu stress test program), or keep it simple and run a performance demanding game on high settings. If you try with a game you will also test the gpu at the same time so that might give different results/temperatures. From what I heard the cpu should be the biggest problem though so try to keep the cpu load as close to 100% as possible on all cores for best test results.

Hope the "instructions" make sense That's about how I would do it but if you have a better way (or anybody else got a better suggestion) go for that instead.
Looking forward to see the results. Big thanks!

    @Uttern & @anb8
While it might not be the best way (or it may be), an "industry standard" is running Prime95 and FurMark simultaneously as well as something like HWINFO64 that will show max temperatures recorded as well as if there was thermal throttling.

I don't see the the latest Aspire V 17 Nitro (announced in Sept) VN7-792 on the US website. its the one with the usb Thunderbolt 3 3.1 type-c port and NVMe PCIe SSDs. I want to see the options (specs) for that it does come with a 4k Screen option I think? I also want to know if it can be purchased without a DVD player (I don't need that).

First test done with Intel Extreme Tuning utility
    upload_2015-11-6_9-49-34.png
It allows you to run CPU, Memory or Video stress test.
This was a 10-minute CPU stress test, all 8 cores were running on 100% the whole time (per task manager), the max temperature was 75C and the core frequency was stable at 3.10GHz.
I hope this is enough for the first quick test, I may do some more later today or over the weekend.

A 5 minute and a 10 minute stress test in XTU, now you can see the thermal throttling information which is 0%, so I guess there is really n upload_2015-11-6_14-21-4.png o thermal throttling happening with this laptop.

Thermal throttling is more likely to happen in games where both CPU and GPU are under load, that's why it's recommended to test for it when both CPU and GPU are stressed.
While this is much more likely to happen when CPU and GPU share the cooling system (i.e. heat-pipes from both lead to one radiator), it's also possible that it might happen whith separate heat-pipes and radiators.

Another reason to test both is that in recent times we've seen underpowered PSUs and when both CPU and GPU are under full load and therefore are most power-hungry they draw more power than the PSU can provide. That will cause either battery to used which means that you can only play for as long as the battery can supplement PSU or the notebook becomes unstable.

Either way I would recommend using the same testing procedure everyone else uses - for once there is a reason it's being used and another thing is that that makes results comparable.
That being said your current results @anb8 seem very good (although 10 minutes is not long enough)

Ok, another test here. This is after about 15-20 minutes playing Witcher 2 on High at 1920x1200. The CPU temp is now in 78-85C range and the throttling occasionally kicks in at 1% or 2%, you can see the small green spikes at the bottom of this chart:

This is after playing Trackmania 2 for about 15 minutes. Temp 80-85C, highest throttling 3%, mostly between 0-2%
    upload_2015-11-6_16-4-27.png

Are these results good compared to other laptops?

I posted this a few days ago. The re-paste helped in some instances, but in others it seemed to have no effect.

Since when I was in the machine I installed an SSD, I knew this machine would remain faster at a lower clock, even for gaming. I played a game earlier tonight and I hit 102c on one core and 98c on the other, not happy with that. I have come to the conclusion the cooling in the laptop is just not up to the task and I don't like heat.

Here is what I did to fix the issue and to cool this down. I could have probably lowered graphic settings in order to eek a small drop in temps out of the machine in games, but why? Why should I look at ugly graphics in order to make a machine run cooler that should have had the right cooling to begin with? I went my own path since I don't care about the big numbers in benchmarks, I care about real life performance and went that route,

I created a new power profile in windows 10 and named it "high temp gaming". Now, going in and out of the power profile manager is not at all my idea of fun. So, after the profile was created I cracked open the command prompt and typed this in:

    Code:
     powercfg -l
This listed all the plans on my computer including the one I created with the GUIDs listed. I then opened notepad and typed in:

    Code:
    powercfg -s (GUID)
I then saved as, made sure to hit all files (not text files) and named the file "game.bat". I created a second one for balanced when just browsing the web and playing light games where the cooling can handle such things.

Now when I game I click the bat file for the gaming profile which I have the max processor state at 80%. This leaves me with temps in the low 80s which I can live with. Now everything is an easy click to change from one to the other without having to open power options.

I know this will not be everyones cup of tea, but I figured I would post it for those whom hate high temps and still like nice visuals. The 80% runs my CPU at 1.9 ghz which I can live with and only notice a very slight hit to loading with no issues in gaming at all.

I hope this falls on the eyes of one person that hates heat as much as I do and finds this a help :D.

That would have been true for every version of Windows before 10 as well for me. But setting my CPU to 99% does not result in disabling turbo for me. It only takes 1% from the CPU top speed. So instead of disabling turbo, it takes my turbo speed of 3 ghz and knocks it down to 2.988 ghz.

The 1% trick does not work for me any longer.

I am happy with the above result, it works with no issues.

strange that we get different results. BTW my webcam is not visible in the device manager in win 10 but worked fine in 8.1! Do you have any idea how to install the correct drivers for it? I can't find them online.

Should be able to go here:

    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

Just punch in your credentials and you should be good to go.

Absolutely no problems with my Nitro VN7-791G-576X and Windows 10, but it was a clean install.

I'm wondering if it is a Broadwell issue.

I did a clean install (installed new drive) and it was the same before and after. It don't really bother me. In a way, the way this chip is clocking makes more sense. It is not "seeing" turbo as turbo but instead is "seeing" the whole speed of the chip. In a way better and gives me finer control of the clock in the full range available using percentages.

Windows 10 just found mine and made it work.

The only driver I had to get was the SD card reader. Does it show up in the device manager under imaging devices? I would wonder if there might be a hardware issue if not.
