You can but that's not a good idea. That is not a good card and neither is AC version of 7260 (both have issues with 2.4GHz band) but the AC version at least offers something for your trouble - 866mbps theoretical connection with a 802.11ac router (which works great).

7260 N is like Intel 6230 only worse since 6230 doesn't have issues on 2.4GHz band.

Either go with AC version of 7260 (especially if you plan on upgrading the router) or stick with a previous generation card that will work correctly.

    There's a m.2 slot

Then likewise i can argue not everyone iS willing to take the entire machine apart just to add more ram and you'll be in more trouble if youmessed up there. Like i said before, the only solid advantage vn7 has is the m.2 slot, other than that it's just your preference

Is the battery on the V Nitro series replaceable or is that soldered?

Battery is 'glued' I've heard, though acer will swap the battery out of required for a reasonable fee. Doesn't help the fact you are without your laptop for that period and the associated risks when in transit.

Impartial reviews seem to be impressed with the build quality. Perhaps due to the bar having been set relatively low in previous showings from Acer. Im seriously considering this if it ever gets released in uk!

    Hm, ok,

Can u give me 1-2 links for wlan cards u would choose? I only need stable 50Mbps 2,4GHz/5GHz.

Do u have experience with the intel 6235?

    Thank you!

Wouldn't that (the speed) entirely depend on how far away from your router you intend to use your laptop, and the obstructions in between? Most cheap cards would be fine less than 1 metre, but if you want to work at (e.g.) 15m with 2 brick walls in between your options change.

But I find two models on Newegg
    Acer Aspire V17 VN7-791G-77JJ Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16 GB DDR3L Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit - Newegg.com
    and
    Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition VN7-791G-73AW Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2 GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 8.1 - Newegg.com

They are both equiped with 860m, and all the other parameters are same, but 300$ difference on price, so what is the difference?

Maybe the more expensive one comes with an UHD-panel and Newegg only listed it wrong? Because I have seen such configs lately.

First hand experience - no. Second hand experience - yes indeed. I'm a moderator of a networking section here on NBR and because of that role I have read every single post made in that sub-forum for no less than last 5 years :hi2:

To be honest the best 802.11n card is Intel 6200/6205. It's cheap, dual band, has (and always had) perfectly stable drivers and never caused any problems. Intel 6230/6235 is basically the same card but with Bluetooth added. It had some problems in the past (limited throughput) but Intel never admitted that there was an issue (just like they refuse to admit that 7260 has issues). Still - there haven't been any problems with 6230/6235 for a while now so it looks like they have fixed it (it looked like a driver issue from the start)

Basically - if you need BT I'd recommend 6230/6235 if you don't 6200/6205. Just don't buy a card advertised as Lenovo or HP card - these won't work even though Acer doesn't white-list cards. Lenovo and HP cards work only in Lenovo or HP notebooks respectively and those notebooks accept only those cards (so it work both ways).

Speed would depend on many factors including distance, obstructions, interference from other neighboring Wi-Fi networks and non-Wi-Fi transmissions (cordless phones, child monitors, Bluetooth and many other devices work on the same 2.4GHz band) and last but not least on the router/access point. You may have the best Wi-Fi card in the world but if your router/AP is crap, it won't make any difference.

They don't do that for sure.

Well, i got the laptop in on Friday. Didnt have a chance to mess with it till saturday evening.

    Initial impressions:

Superb build quality. I mean it really feels like a nice piece of kit. Little to no screen flex, almost no chassis flex (i.e. from resting palms while typing, etc... And i have fat sausage hands too). The laptop has a really nice texture both on the lid and the area around the keyboard and touchpad. Doesn't take fingerprints unless you've been grubbin on some potato chips (I think you red coats call them crisps) or something. Its very sleek and thin, almostly laughably so. I pulled out my old clevo (this thing is like 6 years old, had a 9800m GT in it to give point of reference) and its close to 1/3 the thickness and probably half or more of the weight. The screen looks very good. Better than any TN i've seen. I've never seen a professional grade IPS so i can't comment on how this consumer grade panel is compared to a high end IPS, but i can tell you it blows even a good TN panel out of the water. The Laptop is also dead silent while running normal windows stuff, i.e. surfing web, typing stuff up, etc. The laptop starts up and shuts down stupid quick, like less than 10 seconds from power button to typing in your password.

I also can't comment on the touchpad as i plugged a mouse in (i'm pretty much anti touchpad, they could ship without them for all i care).

Ok. So, my excitement with the laptop has been subdued by my (now) unbridled hatred for win8. I mean. honestly, . I want to find the guy who thought the design / UI for win8 was a good thing and dump a bucket of scorpions down his pants. Unfortunately i spent the majority of saturday night getting pre installed crap removed, and figuring out how to make win8 look as much like win7 as possible. That being said i didnt get to run any gaming tests with it, so i can't comment on the 860m.

All in all, so far, i'm EXTREMELY pleased with this laptop. It is exactly what i wanted. I'm very glad i didnt wait for the Asus G550, or go with the GS60 ghost.

One of the 15 inch versions is available for shipping right now on acer.com!

Acer Aspire VN7-591G-75NJ Notebook | Acer Store

If buying it on acer.com make sure to use coupon code PoweredByYou (Supposed to expire 10-31-14)
So, you can save 10%, which comes out to 120 USD on the model that acer.com is selling!

Also, Amazon finally posted the listing to buy this laptop yesterday but than took it down today for some reason.
When it was up on amazon there was no exact release date. It just said ships in 4-6 weeks.

Newegg still has it for sale though with a release date of 10-20-14 or 10-31-14. Depending on which version your waiting for.

Wow, that model on Acer's website looks like a great deal after the coupon. Less than the base model from Newegg but has the 128GB SSD and 4GB extra RAM.

I read a couple pages back about people thinking about replacing the display. Is the display on this laptop subpar? And I saw some notes about thermal throttling. Does it maintain reasonable temperatures at least as a result?

It gets quite hot under load, but it throttles a lot less than the Y50, for example. I posted some graphs with cpu load, cpu freq, and cpu temperature earlier in the thread. Basically, turbo boost will be disabled intermittently under heavy load with high temperatures, but will be enabled again once the cpu has cooled down slightly.

Just found your earlier post. The CPU hit 98C just while playing a game, not benchmarking? That's fairly concerning.

i am typing this on my brand new new acer v nitro 15" with 256 gb ssd and 1 tb disk and 16gb ram...i got it about 4 hours ago, and i have been sitting in front of the tv playing install/uninstall

first of win8 sucks...i have been using win7 for a loooooong time, but this is not acers fault, acer does load it with some software ranging from games to links to dropbox and a trail of office to pokki start menu....they are now gone

for comparison i have had the y50 for a week, and msi gs60 on loan for about half a day, the msi was a friends and it was high on my list until i heard how noisy it was , a shame cause its a really nice laptop too, the y50 was returned cause i hated the screen, its horrible unless you sit 100% correct angle in front of it....forget about letting people looking over your shoulder...

    hardware,

biggest beef is the screen, its thin, really thin and it flexes, in both upper corners theres quite a bit of window screen/bleed, its mostly contained to the edge, and only noticeable when screen is dark, i had a y50 fhd for about a week, and could simply not accepts the narrow viewing angles it offered, on the acer the picture still change a bit depending on angle your viewing it from but it is light years better than the lenovo, best of all it is a matte screen, the coating seems to work well, but the weather is crappy outside so not so much sun or glare through my windows

keyboard on the lenovo is better imho, how ever i like some of the tweaks thats on the acer such as extra large "enter" key, extra wide shift, the feel of the individual keys are something i think most will just get used to...i am typing about as fast on this as i am on any other keyboard....and so far the touch pad has not sent the cursor to a random spot while typing so thats good....greasy oily fingers show imidiatly, but the keys are flat with no texture so should be easy to wipe off

the touchpad will take me a while to get used to, but it dont feel it sluggish...but rather im used to using my left thumb to left click, and with two hads on the pad it gets confused it think

screen hinge seems sturdy and the chassis seems strong, but does have some flex...its been sitting in my lap while i played supreme commander 2, and the fan spun up a bit but not annoying at any point, with a tv in the background i doubt you will notice it much at all however after launcing wolfenstein the fans got going but still nothing compared to the msi, in SC2 the fans never really got spinning

im very much jet lagged, i spent 16 hours in airports and flying....so its not a thorough review....i think its an upgrade over the y50 because if its screen, speakers on the y50 was better....the msi beats both the nitro and y50 if noise is of no concern, so so far happy with the acer....it fit the bill, under 2.5kg, thin and not an apple

i think i am going to drop win7pro on it

ohh and the bios allows you to do nothing really except decide boot order and set the time

why do you say PCIe ssd sucks? this test seems to say the opposite:
    Samsung XP941 & Plextor PX-G256M6e M.2 Qualification - Puget Custom Computers
what i dont know because i'm bit ignorant on the subject, is if Acer V Nitro motherboard does support pciexpress bus on m.2 sata. On devices specifications i could find these voices
    "Intel 8 series/C220 series PCI EXPRESS root port #3 - 8c14"
    "Intel 8 series/C220 series PCI EXPRESS root port #4 - 8c16"
"intel Xeon processor E3-1200 v3/4th gen core processor PCI EXPRESS x16 controller . 0c01"
plus, in the article they say they could boot on almost every motherboard they tested the ssd. But I can't understand if those are comparable to the Acer V Nitro series.
Asking this question to acer support, they answered to me that they do not give support on customization, but just generic information, so when i asked again to know some more specifications on motherboard, they answered to me:
"these are the availabel informations on the motherboard: VN7-791G-70BU + Poseidon_HBS" :)

    1. the current PCIe ssd's 4k performance, which is what impacts normal usage the most, is not that higher if not equal to sata ssds
    2.
Motherboard BIOS Version Samsung XP941 Plextor PX-G256M6e
Asus Z97-A (Haswell) 1205 UEFI Only BIOS & UEFI
Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 (Haswell) 1202 UEFI Only BIOS & UEFI
Asus Gryphon Z97 (Haswell) 1202 UEFI Only BIOS & UEFI
Asus H97I-Plus (Haswell) 2202 UEFI Only BIOS & UEFI
Asus X79-Deluxe (Ivy Bridge-E) 0801 No Boot BIOS & UEFI

this clearly shows that it's not bootable on every motherboard. unless you have z97 or above it's not gonna bootable. for mobile chipsets you have to wait until hm97 is out which is gonna be half a year at least. vn7 has a hm87, which doesn't support boot up from PCIe ssds

what would you like to know....temps while doing what ?

40C on all cores just sitting doing nothing ...gpu at 27 (realtemp)

i had my steam directory with me, so i got supreme commander 2 and wolfenstein...arma3 and ace combat...so that is all i can bechmark...but i got no table to sit with...so if theres a way to enable a demo mode let me know and i will run it

@macknew...thanks for looking i havent gotten that far yet...i am on vacation, with limited internet (i got 5gb which has to last me 14 days arghhhh)

the palm rest and touchpad are a grease and oil magnet ....its nuts how easy it "stains"...but it also wipes easy

I had the MSI GS60 for a couple weeks. I was ok with the noise. I ended up returning it because:

    1) Its chassis is nearly as big as a 17" laptop. It wouldn't fit in my bag designed for 15.6" laptops.
    2) Swapping the Alt and Windows keys may work for gamers. But I ended up staring at the Metro tiles screen every time I tried to use an alt-key shortcut in my apps. It's not something I could "get used to" either because I use an external keyboard at home.
    3) Battery life was "only" 3.5 hours, which isn't bad but not up to par for a modern laptop, especially one with such a large chassis.
    4) Uses a Kepler 860m instead of the lower power Maxwell 860m.

Beautiful laptop otherwise. If the above things and noise don't bug you, I'd highly recommend it.

The screen on the Y50 is ridiculously easy to replace. A good replacement IPS panel costs about $110.

With that in mind, would you still pick the Acer over the Y50?

(The other advantage of the Acer is being able to take an M.2 and 2.5" drive. The Y50 is limited to a single 2.5" drive.)

I'm wondering about that as well. For those who don't know, the M.2 spec allows for both PCIe and SATA drives. A full implementation would be able to use either type of drive.

Most of the implementations so far only allow a SATA drive (has 2 notches in the PCB connector). A few only allow a PCIe drive (1 notch in the connector). I haven't yet seen a laptop M.2 slot which allows both PCIe and SATA drives. The Kingston SSD (on the 17" Nitro) is a SATA-type M.2 drive, same as used in the GS60 in fact.

I have the Acer VN7-791G-70BU for a few days, i noticed a very nasty problem on display. when you adjust the brightness level, there are some values where the screen "flashes". There are 11 levels ov brightness, i noticed this on levels 3, 4, 5 and 8,9,10, most marked on level 4. This really disturbs so much that for me I cannot work setting brightness on these levels. Plus, when increasing brightness you can hear a little noise increasing, probably something related to the power of the IPS display. At maximum level, this noise is disturbing to me.

    temps

prime95 alone it starts out with turbo hitting 3.1, but once cpu hits 94 ish the fans go full speed, and it throttles to get temps to about 80c or about 2.6ghz....and then it stays there

prime 95 and furmark (1080P) cpu hits 95c fairly fast, and gets throttled to about 2.5-2.6 ghz....gpu never got above 85c...stopping furmark but letting prime continue, the clock rate jumps about 2.9ghz, and cpu temp drops to about 80c

ffurmark alone cpu stays under 60, gpu stays aroun 78c

the room i am in is about 19c and laptop sitting on a hard table...pretty much optimal conditions

btw the cpu has an intel 4600 in it....this is enough for a bunch of older games...supreme commander plays nicely on it, even whits 500 units on screen

This is an Internet forum but if you had read KasperA's posts you would have noticed he is from Denmark. And by us I actually meant me and him, not all of us ;)

Point being- unfortunately he meant Celsius.

Yeah I know :D I don't want to derail the thread and get into details but it's a running joke with me and Canada. I see now how all of that made no sense to you in the first place

    EDIT:

    To avoid being completely useless:

Here's translation of an interesting review of 15" version of Nitro from Czech Republic. It's a good one with temps and all the interesting bits.

And here is a far less thorough one of the same notebook also from Czech Republic - apparently these are rolling out there at the moment.
