Hi guys... new here.. from India.. just bought myself an Acer Aspire 1683WLMi... Just a few doubts here that hopefully someone out there can help me with...

I read the Huge thread regarding the AOPEN DVD writer (Slimtype DVDRW SOSW852S) with the PRS7 firmware.. i have the same drive just wanted to know if there is anyone out there who upgraded the Firmware (and from where?) and wrote a working DVD+R DL....

Secondly i have a 60GB 4200 RPM notebook drive which kills the fun in doom3 (at certain points in the game because of hard-disk access in the middle of the game). Firstly i wanna know if its due to having only 64MB VRAM or 512 System RAM (The lags appear to be because of loading certain sounds in the game..) or is it due to the hard drive? I get great framerates in doom3 at 800x600 Ultra Quality (0x Antialiasing) except when there is HDD access.. (ATi Radeon Mobility 9700/64MB)

I want 2 know if a 7200RPM Drive in an enclosure (USB2.0/1394) will speed things up... (in short will it be faster than a 4200RPM drive on UltraATA133?) Will someone do the math for me and help me out here?? :)

    Thanks a Lot!

personally i would up the ram to 1GB, and take out the 4200 RPM drive and put it in an enclosure and replace it. With a Hitachi 7200 rpm drive.

Need i mention, im from India... pretty difficult to get notebook accessories here... i'm planning to use a 3.5" enclosure 2 use a regular Desktop IDE 7200 RPM drive with my laptop (USB2.0)... will it speed things up or slow them down?

USB will be slower in general, because of the speed of the device from the USB and the latency.
