    New Hard Drive

    why doe's my new 320gb hard drive only show as a 298gb ? i have installed it into a usb hard drive caddy done a quick format, ready to clone my laptop hard drive onto my new one.i'm just a bit baffled as to the above. 22gb seems alot to lose.

    because of the kilo/mega/giga calculation. HDD manufacturers count 1000MB as 1GB, although it's actually 1024MB=1GB. same goes for KB and MB. my "1 Terabyte" HDD only has 951MB.

    As whizzo stated above manufacturers count 1000MB as 1GB, They also approximate 1MB = 1000kB & 1kB = 1000bytes. However these should be 1024 instead of 1000 for exact calculation done by the computer.

    So according to manufacturer:
    320GB = 320*1000*1000*1000 bytes = 3.2E11 bytes

    The same number of bytes are available to the computer:

    So according to computer:
    3.2E11 bytes =3.2E11/(1024*1024*1024) GB = 298.02322GB approx to 298GB

    thanks whizzo for your prompt reply. now all i have to do is figure out the safest way to clone my drive,having never done anything like this before could you give me any help or advice. thanks again wayne

    I Think Acronis True Image would be your best bet for this purpose..
