Picked it up from Costco yesterday. I'm a self-employed writer and needed a new laptop for work.

I thought about getting a gaming laptop, but in the end decided to get a budget model instead and upgrade my desktop. It was a tough choice between the Aspire and the HP DV6-6013CL, both $600. I liked the housing and keyboard better on the HP, but it had a slower processor and less RAM.

For the price, the stats on the 5742 couldn't be beat. An i5-480M Sandy bridge CPU with 6GB of RAM and a 620 GB hard drive. I was dismayed to find the audio is mono, though. Going to get one of those Logitech lap desks with the built in speakers and fan to make up for it.

I'm coming from a 5 year old Compaq Presario V5000 that ran XP, so there's a lot to get used to. It's so nice to have a reasonably speedy laptop again.

I'm still tweaking the settings and adjusting the menus.
