So I sorted my 5315's battery problem (it was the AC adapter), only to find that now the touchpad is quite unresponsive. It won't move smoothly, constantly stopping and starting. I've played with all the settings I can find, and installed the latest Synaptics XP driver, but Windows seems to see it as a "PS/2 port pointing device" - the laptop doesn't have a PS/2 port, so this is obviously incorrect.

    Any help would be appreciated.

It's normal to be reported as PS/2 port pointing device, my 5715(same mobo as 5315) is reporting the same thing. I guess this PS/2 port is internal and the touchpad is connected to it directly.
As for the unresponsive touchpod problem....try to use Acer's the drivers instead.

I installed the ALPS drivers instead of the Synaptics ones, and this worked for a couple of days, but now the problem's back worse than ever. I'm worried that it's the touchpad hardware itself, which is a major problem as it would require a complete case replacement to fix.

    Anyone got any other ideas?

You are right it is a PS/2 port internal one connected via a flat ribbon cable.
If I were you I spend more time optimizing the Vista instead of wasting time downgrading to Xp.
Hardware support on Xp now sucks since Win7 is using Vista Driver Architecture.

Thanks for your input, but that doesn't solve my problem.
