Okay, apparently there is no serial port available on the 5920G, so I had to use my old Dell Lattitude to do a firmware update on my Integra 9.8DTC surround sound processor, which was a tad annoying!

Is there any other way to do these sorts of upgrades with this laptop? Does a "USB to RS232" cable exist or something along those lines? Would hate to have to always revert back to my old Lattitude to update my various Home Theater components (many of which are updated via the serial port method)!

    Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure about this, but I believe that USB to serial cables have a little chipset inside the plug. At least that's what I came up with after looking into it.

I experiment with Linux. External, serial-connected US Robotics modems are the most reliable way to make a dial-up connection. I bought a couple of Sabrent USB to serial cables at Newegg a few months ago.

Ubuntu Linux had support for the cable right out of the box. Even though they were advertised as Vista-compliant, the included drivers didn't work and Vista was unable to find drivers online.

USB to serial cables do exist, but be careful when you go shopping because it's not as simple as you might think.

Some members on an HT forum have suggested a Keystone USB to Serial adaptor as the way to go. So I will be looking for one of those in Canada ...
