    Hi

I just USB connected a Asus PDA to my Acer Travelmate 291LCI, and the screen went White, and i had to turn it off and back on again.
When it powered up i had a Boot option dialog appear, choices were Floppy,CD-ROM,Hard Drive, and Network. Chose Hard Drive, and nothing happened, so turned off, and on again, this time and every time since, there is nothing on the screen, the power lights come on as normal, and the fan runs for about 5 secs, which is normal, but i get nothing on the screen.
I have tried removing the Battery, and just using the AC power lead, still the same.
I have tried tapping F2, but still the same, nothing on the screen.

Can someone help on this please.

    Thanks

Looks like a bad harddrive or backlight.
Try booting from the recovery cd or mount an external monitor

    loucypher,

From your description, it sounds like there could be a problem with your motherboard. Did you turn the power all the way off, connect an external monitor, and then turn it on?

If you try that and it doesn't work, I would send it in to Acer. go to http://www.acersupport.com, click on your country, and then click on Depot Repair.

    Hi superjohnyo

Have been in touch with Acer, and they seem to agree with you, that its the Motherboard.
I would like to have ago at replacing the board myself, just for the experience.
Are there any sites that you know of that specialize in that!

    Thanks

    loucypher,

I don't know of any sites that you can buy those parts at. As for doing it yourself, I think that would void your warranty[ :)].

    Hi superjohnyo

The Laptop is out of Warranty

have managed to get hold of the Service Manual for the Travelmate 290.
    https://www.synapsenow.com/synapse/data/7117/documents/tm290sg.pdf

I have stripped down the Laptop, and removed the Board.

Included with the Service Manual were all the Part No's, so did a Google, and managed to find a Supplier in London.

That Manual is a god-send, Scroll down to Chapter 3 Page 46.

    Hi

Replacement Laptop Board arrived ¾ hour ago, and I now have my laptop running again.
You can imagine what was going through my head as I pushed the power on button.
The thought of it being the CPU that was faulty, had been doing my head in!

I doubt very much that i would have been able to do it without the Service Manual though!

The Board cost £290.00, but beleive you me the cost has certainly been worth what i have learnt.
