Odd Acer Aspire 6920g Intermittent Backlight

Post title sums up the problem but the detail is:
The backlight on my 6920g only works intermittently. When the initial Acer boot-up screen is shown the screen is fully lit but afterwards it can go off at any point from then onwards. The longest the screen has stayed on is 30 minutes, but usually it goes off after less than a minute.
Shining a light on the screen shows there is an image being displayed.
Pressing Fn + F6 and then any key can restore the backlight from anything from 1 to 10 seconds before it goes off again, although this does not always work.
I have used the HDMI output to use my television as a screen and that works fine, although that's obviously not an ideal solution.
The inverter has been replaced as a attempt to solve this problem.
While I am running Vista Home Premium normally, attempts to run Ubuntu and OpenSUSE from memory sticks and CDs haven't made any difference.
Prior to this problem the screen was fine, and I hadn't performed any recent updates. I used the laptop in the morning, switched it off for about 6 hours and when I turned it back on the screen no longer worked.

Hope somebody can help as I'm at my wits end, and I really can't afford a replacement right now.

Hope this post isn't too long :p

If it was the backlight it would have just died on you- not try to annoy you.
    It's more likely that it's a faulty cable/ribbon-cable.

Could also be a dying inverter. I would replace both cable and inverter at the same time, since they are generally really cheap and simple to replace at once.

I appreciate the help but as I've said the inverter has already been changed. I suppose it could be a faulty ribbon or cable, but wouldn't the backlight only go off if the cable was moved? And would Fn+F6 still work?
I've already fiddled a bit with the cables to see if it makes a difference but haven't actually replaced them yet.
Thank you for the advice so far :)

Reading whole messages, not my best part :D

If the inverter is already replaced, problem could also be motherboard or the panel itself. So many different possibilities.

I realise there are many different possibilities; that is the point of asking for advice and guidance, however, I cannot see how it is the MoBo as I have a good image on an external monitor. I have now reflashed the BIOS and and reinstalled all the display drivers to the latest standard with no discernible effect. So, has anyone else had a similar problem preferably cured without replacing the panel?

It can be the mobo, if the circuits driving the inverter are faulty. Or, the backlight CCFL itself (in the panel) could be dying.

    Hi all,

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I figured it would be the better option since I have the same exact problem as the OP with the same exact model laptop. I'm new to laptop repair so I had a few questions I wanted to ask before I get started and order parts.

So I've figured out that I probably need a new CCFL bumb and inverter, however doing online research got me confused.

First question: There are a bunch of youtube videos thats show people replacing the screen in 6920s and say "you no longer need an inverter board". Is it correct to assume that I still need one since I don't plan on replacing the whole panel?

Second question: There was one youtube video titled "Converting 16inch LED screen to CCFL for Acer Aspire 6920" (I'd provide a link, but I'm posting this from my iPhone). This got me confused. Does the laptop come with a LED lit screen or did they just title the video wrong?

I also want to make sure I get the correct parts before I start.
The CCFL bulb I'm looking at: 16.0" LCD Screen CCFL Backlight Bulb Lamp Laptop Acer Aspire 6920-832G32F 6920G | eBay
(I'm worried about that bulb because when I took the screen apart (not the panel) I didn't see a connector like that one)
    The inverter: NEW Acer Aspire 6920 6920G 6935 6935G LCD Inverter IV22 | eBay

So long story short: My plan is to order those 2 parts and replace them, is this correct or no?

Hi, I have just replaced the screen on a 6920G and the reason you will have seen something about the inverter no longer being required is only if you are replacing the original LCD screen with an LED one.
The old (Original) screen is no longer manufactured although you do get some second hand ones being sold on e-bay but if you do a search for the screen for this Acer you will be offered the LED one and you bypass the inverter.it is simple to substitute the screen, but of course Acer have made it an absolute pig to get the front bezel off to do it

    Hi all,

I have the EXACT same problem on my Acer Aspire 6920.
Right now I am working on an external screen, which works perfectly.

Does anyone have a solution to this?
    I didn't replace anything yet.

If it would be the cable, does anyone know where to buy it? I can only find webshops that sell the backlight inverter.

    Many thanks,

    Simon

    Hi Simon.

I fixed the problem by swapping in a new screen. You can either go for a new CCFL screen + new inverter or a new LED screen + conversion cable. I did the later. If you have the 1366x768 screen you can get this http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=200657286655&index=3&nav=SEARCH&nid=50164969710 (although it was way cheaper when I did it in December). Thats the exact part I used from the same seller. It was a very quick 20 minute repair job and my laptop has worked perfectly since. The guys are also very helpful if you have any questions. I called them twice and they were able to give me guided step by step instructions over the phone.

I think like 1% could sum up the amount of bad connectors and invertors, the rest of 99% are bad LCD screen displays, and they have to be replaced.

Thank u guys for the quick reply's!

I'm wondering if Maverick542 got the problem fixed?
I am doubting to replace my screen or to buy a new laptop. The laptop charger connection is also bad. Its not the charger, the connection inside the laptop is bad. When it's connected badly my screen starts to flicker.

@nigh7ang3l: Nope, the most common reason for backlight issues is a failed inverter.

    Hi
I could not have said it better!
And I am at the same point! Replaced inverter. Did you ever figure it out?
Others should have started there own thread instead of writing all over yours!
I'm looking at seeing what it takes to replace the back light bulbs. My computer is not worth putting very much money into.
Please let me know if you figured it out.
