I have aspire 5739G since 2009. I never had a problem with him. I thought about upgrad it. I just ordered an Intel T9800 processor for it. I will also buy a 240GB ssd drive. I have some questions for you and I will be grateful for your response.

1. Can a laptop use 8 GB of RAM? I currently have 2x2GB. If so what bones? Do I need to switch something in the BIOS? Is there a sense of exchange 8GB vs 4 GB?
2. I know that the T9800 can be used - only if it does not emit more heat. Has anyone used it and is there a big difference between the T6600.
3. Do you have to use thermocouples or just a thermal paste when replacing the processor?

1. It can use 8GB of ram but not all modules works in it (HMT351S6CFR8C-PB works for sure cus I am using these myself). Best would be to test before buying. No additional steps in BIOS or elsewhere needed. What it does? Well, it depends what you are doing. For browsing, yt, and other simple daily stuff 4GB is enough if you aren't gaming. Tho, SSD's use ram to improve SSD performance (at least samsung ones do) which might make 4GB a bit low

2. I upgraded from T6600 to T9600 (2.8Ghz) which is basically same chip as T9800(2.9Ghz) just mine clocked lower. It needed some tinkering around to keep temps stable on extended intense use (like playing games) specially on hot days- good thermal paste and lowering CPU voltage with Throttlestop solved it (even tho I done much more than that, this had the best effect). Finally, yes its very noticeable performance difference between T6600 and T9600 (in your case- T9800 should do slightly even better)

3. No you don't need to use thermal pads when replacing CPU. You leave GPU in place and disassemble laptop so you could take out motherboard while all heatsinks are still on it. Once MB is out unscrew CPU heatsink and lift it up . GPU and CPU fins are separate and just sticked together with tape. That allows to remove CPU without taking out GPU (which if taken out needs thermal pads)

 

I just checked RAM, but I'm using DDRIII 2x4GB 1333 from another laptop.
The BIOS shows 8GB RAM installed, just like Windows.

Is RAM: 2Rx8 P3-8500S-07-10-F2 worse than DDRIII 4GB-1333?
Can I normally use 1333 instead of 1066? Will it be any difference?

 

1066 is max on this laptop, so, as long as system detects 8GB of ram it's all good, because it will automatically set ram speed to 1066Mhz no matter if its 1333 or 1600(like mine) sticks and in the end it will have no difference.

P3-8500 means its DDR3-1066 sticks, it would be slower sticks than DDR3-1333 but as already mentioned this laptop can run stable RAM at 1066Mhz only, so they will have no difference in this laptop(not accounting possibly different latency) as 1333 RAM sticks still will be clocked at 1066.

While its possible to overclock RAM to 1333 with few software combination, system becomes unstable, so it's not worth it(did that myself but scraped that idea because of instability)

(LONG POST AHEAD)

I'm new here, and I have been using my Acer 5739G - t6600 @ stock 2.2Ghz, 240M 1Gb OC-ed @ 669 Mhz Core Cock - 1473 Mhz Shader, 4Gb RAM (2x2Gb), with recently upgraded (last year) SanDisk SSD 240 Gb (real world speed in my case ~140mb/s).

Gotta say I love this "Toy Machine" as i call it! Been using this puppy for everything!
From gaming and 720p movies to graphics and editing work.
2d to 3d cad (even some impressively large files that other desktops with GT 9800 struggled with - back in the day when gt 9800 was still "relevant" in the work environments i was in - advertising sign making and prints+interior design+rapid prototiping )
Rendering, photoshop work, etc, all of it.

So, most of my work was done on this machine since the day i got it till right this day. And the same goes for gaming too!

Cleaned regularly (recently every 3/4 months), Arctic Silver 5 all 'round (haven't changed the thermal pads on gpu tho), used with Targus Chillmat for optimal cooling and comfort (used to stay at ~75C under load for CPU and GPU slightly above at ~78C)

Very portable and very rugged. It WAS.. Now?.Not so much.. )

Last year I dropped it kinda hard, on some stairs, big metal steps, at the metro. It dropped for maybe 1,5meters (freefall), then landed on it's corner right on the edge of a step, then "bounced" a few more steps down ) Believe it or not, none of the internals were damaged. The "incident" only broke the back plastic grill covering the fan and some other plastics on the frame al-around.

Here is a list of things i need to fix/adress:

KEYBOARD -> on my second keyboard here and it's starting to sowly die. no more backspace for me, no more numpad 4,2,7, etc..

FAN -> i sat the laptop down on a table full of tools, on some tweezers, the thing made contact with the blades of the fan while it was spinning (bottom cover was opened, for better airflow - usually had it on for the workshop environment, but this time i forgot about it) -> fixed by breaking 3 other blades at 90degree, 180degree and 270 degree away from the one that originally broke - this balanced it very good and am still able to run everything as before -> new load temps 75-79 CPU and 76-81 GPU (in a really hot room ~26C) and it's still really quiet too so it's partially fixed i would say, at least for the moment..

CASE/PLASTIC FRAME -> dropped many times, still in "one piece" but really almost all of the plastics need changing. Some screws are eating away at the plastics because of all the flex in the frame. Getting bits and pieces falling off every now and then when moved, i can even see the PCB through a ~1cm hole in the front plastic cover, 3cm to the right of the track-pad.

LEFT HINGE -> recently broke in two, still barely usable - if laptop is not moved. The plastic around the hinge is also shattered, the whole lower left corner all around the lcd panel itself - the plastic back panel of the screen and the front plastic bezel , shattered when it fell at the metro on those steps as well, just as the heat exhaust grill did, but the pieces are still hanging on for these. I can now, using very little force, push the whole LCD off of it's left hinge and it still rests on the right one. Just as easily able to push the frame back to where it sits "firmly" back in it's place. Until the laptop is moved again, that is ) So I have to be really careful with it 'till i order the replacement part. using it as a desktop pc now. And still, everything runs just fine.

POWER JACK (on pcb)-> Changed it myself with a new replacement part I bought from a local pc shop. De-soldered the old one (the plastic part in it was crumbly, looked almost charred) and soldered in the new part works like a charm now and much less heat coming from the top-left side of the keyboard and from around the power button. It used to get really hot. Now am starting to see a problem with the cord from the power brick to the laptop. Cat played with it and I think she nicked it - in some positions the cable is fine,it gives current but in others the beast doesn't get power anymore.

It's great to see that even after all these years you guys are still going strong with these machines. I've been following this thread since last year, I've seen what you guys have done to this machine and it makes my heart grow

As a "last stand" for the beast i'm thinking of fixing up the plastics on it, the hinge, fan and psu, and after that i would like to upgrade.
So,this is what i'm thinking:
- CPU - P9700 (2.8Ghz and low tdp 27W- much better than the t6600)
- GPU - FirePro M4000, M5100 or even GeForce GT 1030 ?

- *also looking to get a better fan for the cooling in this machine, i saw people talking at one point about an MSI one. can anyone tell me more about those?
-**and also wanted to get a tray for a second hdd/ssd in place of the dvd. anyone know where i could buy one.

Prefferably a shop or shops that deliver in south-east Europe - Romania.

I think it's not very worth while to drop 200$~ in 5739g today as it would be outperformed by miles in every task by new 500$~ laptop. Not to mention that with new laptop you get all the newer, faster stuff like sata3, usb3, ddr4, pristine/new condition of overall chassis, screen, keyboard, connections, battery... While you still can do stuff on 5739g today, investing this much $ is not worth anymore, unless you got some huge sentiments to it or just spare parts lying around and doing nothing- it's time to move on.
