Just ripped out the alps touchpad that came with my notebook and replaced it with a synaptics one, felt the difference on the first touch![]()

I did the same with my 8320T. I have no idea what companies are thinking when going ALPS, except for saving money.
-
I don't think it's not about the money. The same model often has Synaptics and ALPS depending on a unit.
Synaptics is the only company that manufacturers really good touchpads- I think there's just not enough of them.
Acer seems to know ALPS is worthless because they often replace ALPS touchpads with a Synaptics one for free when someone RMAs notebook because of it. This leads me to believe that they wouldn't buy ALPS if they were not forced by shortages of Synaptics ones. -

My 5935G came with a synaptics one and without opening the 7738G I could tell it had Alps.
I think downloads is right, they run synaptics till they run out. -
Given that Synaptics is the leader in touchpads, I'm surprised to see that they are not developing touch sensors for tablets. Would be so great if they did because their software/driver implementation is pretty impressive.
Would love to see a honeycomb/ipad tablet with synaptics-like gestures. Three finger hold to launch an app, three finger swipe to go back/forward, etc.
... dibs on the idea! -
There was no need to touch the alps pad to complete the warranty work. The Acer tech just knew how much I hated that Alps.

Yeah I was in no position to send it in for repair.
A tech would take one look at my machine and go *!?* -
Is it true that Apple uses only Synaptics?
If so, kudos! -
I had to swap-in all of the original parts, including bilingual KB, I3 CPU and remove the bluetooth module. Had to swap them all back in when it came back. A pain, but the touchpad was a nice bonus. They threw in a new motherboard since they had to take it out for the repairs.

Could not find a specific part number, looks like it may just come with the upper case assembly.

Any place you can get: 56.PAD01.001
Note that trackpads are stuck on the casing and can be hard to remove. -
