Aspire AS7720-6604: original hard drive (p/n WD3200BEVT) 320 GB crashed and need to replace. Is it alright to replace it with p/n WD5000BEVT 500 GB hard drive. I want to get it but want to make sure its compatible for my laptop.

Yes, it will be compatible. Both are SATA-300 drives.

Thanks A Lot Andy!

How is the new hard drive working? I have been considering similar upgrade for some time, but I couldn't force myself to actually buy the hard drive.
-
Most SATA HDD are compatible. I swapped from a 320 GB 5400 rpm Hitachi that mine came with to the 500 GB 7200 rpm Seagate and it works fine. Most early HDD failures are just bad luck with the pick.

I HAVEN'T GOTTEN IT YET. I JUST HAD A FRIEND CHECK THAT BAD HARDDRIVE AGAIN. HE USED "SPINRITE" TO CHECK. WITH THIS "SPINRITE" SOFTWARE CAN CHECK AND FIX MOST HARD DRIVES. ON SPOTS THAT CANNOT REPAIR IT PLUGS THE BAD SPOT WITH FILLINS THAT ALLOWS YOU TO USE THE REST OF THE HARD DRIVE; IT DID THAT FOR MOST OF THE BAD SPOTS ON MY HARD DRIVE; HOWEVER, ONE SPOT COULDN'T SO I NEED TO GET A HARD DRIVE. HE SUGGESTED I GO TO "WWW/ SPAREPARTSWAREHOUSE.COM" AND LOOK FOR A HARD DRIVE WITH AT LEAST THESE SPECIFICATIONS & IT SHOULD RUN GREAT: SATA-150 / 5400 RPMS / 100-120 GB's.

You should avoid SATA-150 hard drives. They are obsolete and 7720 uses SATA-300. I can't see any reason to do a downgrade if you are buying a new HDD.
-
At the same time, it doesn't really matter. No notebook hard drive can exceed the SATA/150 spec anyways.

@OP - WD5000BEVT is pretty nice drive, I'm very satisfied from it's price/performance/capacity ratio, it's currently unbeatable
Okay to replace orig. HD with another type?
