I'm in the process of trying to fix this laptop for a friend daughter. I'm not sure what she's done to it. When booted it displays operating system not found after the acer logo page. Tried to put in the restore disks but the first one just hangs. Tried the Hitachi drive fitness test, and it goes on about a bunch of missing things and sits at trying to load DFT...
    Comp Breakdown:
    Acer aspire 3000
    AMD sempron 3000 1800 MHz
    512 ram
    80 gig Hitachi travel star
    XP home
    Phoenix bios4.0 release 6.0
    chipset SiSm 760Gx

In the bios info HHd model name and serial number are blank. And in security Hdd password is frozen but it does not ask for a password when it boots, just to get into the bios and I was provided that password. Not sure what frozen means. Maybe he needs a new HDD? Like I said I have the four recovery disks and being past the warranty this seams to be the cheapest way to repair this thing. Also this sucker heats up like crazy, I hope the MB's not fried.
    Thanks All

    Replace the HDD.
You can run an Ubuntu Linux Live CD to see if it works.

Its easy to kill one hard drive , if you drop down the laptop.

I vote too, to replace the hard drive.

Nope, the mobo should be fine, but the HDD seems to be dead if it is not detected in the BIOS.
She can try and boot the notebook with the optical drive removed, and then see if the HDD is detected in the BIOS or not.
Otherwise, the HDD is dead....You'll have to get it replaced.

WoW! I just started to get my dinner and lots of great advice. Almost makes me wish I had an acer, but to be honest this thing chewed up my Saturday and runs hotter than hell. Any advice for the heat. I checked the fan and vents and thier clean.
    Thanks again,

About the temp .... in time the cooling system gets clogged and needs cleaning, by taking it apart .

Air spray or even my powerful air compressor , was unable to flash out the dirt.

    Dirt = fibers from carpets - blanket's - hair .

The little fan acts as vacuum cleaner . :D
