A couple of NBR users have requested information regarding optimizing Acer notebooks. Here are the steps to do it.

First of all, read NBR's notebook optimizing guide found here and follow the steps. Doing that alone brought down my processes a whole lot.

After completing the guide, proceed to uninstall Acer's Empowering Ultilities through the Control Panel Add and Remove Programs. You will see a list of Acer Empowering this and that, but just choose the stock Empowering. That alone will uninstall every other e utility. Please note that eRecovery will not be removed. You can still access it and use it like normal after removal of everything else.

Restart your computer and head directly to AMD Turion's driver download site found here.

    Proceed to download the following:
    -AMD Dual-Core Optimizer
    -AMD Power Monitor Version 1.0.1
-AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2

    Install in this order:
    1. X2 Driver
    2. Dual-Core Optimizer
    3. Power Monitor

It is important to note that the x2 drivers are newer than the one included with the computer, the aspire 5102.

If you are using Turion, follow these steps:
-AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2
    -AMD Power Monitor Version 1.0.1

    Install in that order.

If you are using Sempron, follow these steps:
-AMD Sempron™ Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2
    -AMD Power Monitor Version 1.0.1

    Install in that order.

You should see a decrease of processes from around 60 to the mid 40s. Not only that, but your load times will be faster, and memory usage will drop from around 450-500 to around 300.

Good luck, and post any results that you have.

If you want to reduce processes and power even more, don't install power monitor, since that by itself takes 5% cpu power. Everything else is good.

Do you think that ALL Acer notebooks have Turion X2s??

You will notice that I also have Turion and Sempron in there too AFTER the x2. I haven't used an intel computer in 4 years, so I couldn't write about it.

Well could you at least change the topic title to "Optimizing AMD Acer notebooks"?

Because right now the topic title is pretty misleading.

I haven't touched an intel computer in 4 years, but here is what i know.

Intel cpus use speedstep technology, which allows the user to control cpu speed. I would find speedstep first if it isn't included with the core duo and then uninstall empowering just in case. I don't know where to find it, maybe intel's support site?

I have downloaded the dual-core optimizer and when i try to run it "RUN" nothing happens.
Am I doing some dumb thing?
I will try to download it again.
I already loaded the Chip set BIOS.
    Thank You

There is no need for that because intel processors do not need a driver for speedstep to work in windows you just change the setting in control panel "power options" to portable/laptop and speedstep is automatically enabled, however turion and sempron processors need the amd driver for their cool 'n' quiet to work. Therefore for AMD users they will have to use those drivers but an intel user would just disregard that and do the other optimizing suggestions posted, after all the empowering framework is installed on all acer notebooks whether they be intel or amd.

deltafx1942 perhaps you should edit the first post of this thread to highlight that. Something like intel users disregard the following information.
Also don't forget to tell windows XP users about Acer's Preload Security Patch for Windows XP this is critical if you are using any acer notebook that originally came with windows XP. You can get it here http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/utilities.html (this is for win XP users only)

It is the first one labeled security patch. Every time you restore windows XP on your notebook using the factory image you HAVE TO run this fix. Acer discovered this error and it has been replicated with their windows XP OS recovery image for years so you still need it even if your notebook is a few years old (my previous acer from 2003/2004 has the same active x error). It doesn't matter whether you have Pro,Home or MCE you need this patch. The patch fixes an active x exploit that was found and makes your computer vulnerable to attack using internet explorer.

Does the AMD Power Monitor do anything NHC doesn't do?
