    Hi all,

I have bought an Acer 5920G, T7300, 8600M GS etc laptop and so far I am very impressed with it.

However reading through posts on here I have seen that people have overclocked their graphics cards for extra performance. Being a sucker for tweaking and improving things, I'd like to do the same... :)

How safe is it to do this on a laptop. I don't want to burn it out. I think I've already bricked my Dads laptop thanks to Acers dodgy BIOS update for the 5790.
    (See post http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=205496)
I'd rather not see mine go down the same road :D

So, that being said, could you walk me through the best and safest way to overclock my graphics card (and maybe CPU) or point me in the direction of an "overclocking for dummies :D " guide.

    Thanks :)

Safest way is software level GPU OC.You can use Rivatuner . Search Gaming forum section

What about CPU FSB OC?? I found the name of PLL Clock Generator for 5920G (SLG8SP514) however there is no application that supports this PLL, ClockGen have only SLG505YC56D support

Why would u want to OC the T7300 cpu? It's good as it is. U dont want to OC the cpu and gpu, this will heat up the notebook too much. I would stick to OC the GPU with Ntune, Rivatuner or Atitool. I prefer Atitool.

Hmmm, I've tried RivaTuner, AtiTool and nTune and all three won;t overclock, the just revert back to factory settings (450/400) as soon as I press OK.

    Anyone have any idea's?

Ok then it is probably not overclockable. If i am not mistaken that driver is just on updated version of another 169.xx driver for people playing Unreal and having problems? Maybe try 169.09 or another 169.xx?

I use 101.45 :) Its overclockable for sure

Do 101.45 work on laptops? I'll give 196.09 a try.

    Thanks for you're help Jezzer

I had to go down to 169.04 to get the overclocked settings to stick. Not sure why the later drivers don't let you overclock.

Are these good drivers to use?

What are some good overclock settings to use with the 8600M GS?

    Thanks

U should try to find the right setting yourself because it's dependent on your notebook, cooling, enveriment and sometimes even the gpu revision. Try to find a stable setting but never clock too high in one time but step for step and monitor the temp.

Cool, thanks so much for your help Jezzer.

    Just one last question :)

What are safe temperature limits and whats a good program to monitor the temps?

myself i use atitool 0.26. it's an OCtool wich also monitors the GPU's temp.

At really a full load 80c should be fine , but i have another GPU. I think there is a OC topic about your GPU here somewhere, maybe there some more specific information.

    Np and goodluck

After tweaking this evening, the highest stable settings I've managed to achieve are 675 Core and 575 Memory. Any higher and I get errors. I used nTune to tweak.

    I've tested with 3D Mark06 and got 3407

After some further testing with games I found 650/550 to be the most stable, any higher than this and I get wierd flashing in the games. 3DMark06 gave me a result of about 3250. Can't remember the exact value as I'm at work :)

the highest setting i can get w/ rivatuner 2.06 is @620/440.
above it, it would start flashing... how can you all managed to get higher?
and the temp is already @ 97'C

    btw, i got 4700-something on 3dmark06...

I really donno how you guys achieve this with Riva. Currently i use 174.xx

I have set Core / Mem at : 501 / 426 but while the graphic card actually works, it shows - 581 / 425. When I step up the settings, it still runs on the same settings. So when will I achieve ur target? I'm kind of doubtful whether i'll fry it. :D .

    Alright,

I'm using 169.09 too and overclocking my 8600GT.
Still tweaking but currently reached 550/1100/435.
Pixel Fillrate of 4.4Gpixel/s and Memory Bandwidth of 13.9 GB/s (use tool GPU-Z)
    3dmark score of 3890.
    Temperature hits 85 at load.

4700 is extraordinarily high. What laptop are you using? A 5920, T7500 with 8600GT DDR3? And if so, what drivers?

    I'm having 8600M GT GDDR2 256MB.

So far my most stable settings are with 600/1200/475. Have not benchmarked yet, but I'm happy with the performance in Crysis and COD4. I only overclock with my Cooler Master Notepal Infinite. Temperature is stable at 81 degrees. Using 174.16 drivers..

Can you guys please post the URLs for the updated ForceWare drivers you are using? I can't find any that are compatible with my 7720-6152 unit. I even tried the modded ".inf" trick, with no success.

Wow, please post what drivers you are using. Cos I'm interested whether the newer ones are better than the 169 or vice versa. I can see on your ORB you are using "6.14.11.7431" but I have no idea what Forceware Version that is.

Do you also have a 3d mark result? Very interested since you have the same clock as I do but newer drivers. Thanks.

Lol yea I found out now, didn't notice the last 4 numbers of the driver version were the actual ForceWare version.

    "6.14.11.7431" --> 7341 --> 174.31

    5920G, T7500, 8600GT 512 DDR2, Forceware 174,31...
    Latest 3DMark06 score was 4900-something @mem 453...
but, why my gpu can't handle mem clock over 453...
you guys can get over 500 and stable...

this is a well known issue in Vista, the only way to OC is to change bios clocks and forget about it when instaling new drv. Check Bigspin bios modification guide step by step.

I have the acer aspire 5920g with an 8600m gs and after purchasing left4dead i was disappointed to find I could not get more than 10-20fps.

I decided to overclock my gpu so I grabbed the 167.26 drivers and the modded inf from laptopvideo2go and then used rivatuner to overclock.

I managed to get my settings to:

    core - 655
    shader - 1310
    memory - 550

At these settings no games crashed or had any weird glitches. I now get 30-60fps average in left4dead :)

    Yay!
