Hey all
Most ppl post here because they might have found somethin wrong, or need to haev something fixed. But I want to find out from all those who own an Acer Aspire 5672 WLMi what you think of it from having owned it for sometime. What are the good things, what are the bad (over the long run) and how much would u rate on a scale of 1 to 10.
Thanx
-
Owned mine since mid-Feb., and love it. From 1-10 I'd give it a 8.5, no 10 because that'd be perfect and there is NO perfect notebook, computer, phone, etc. But I cannot pick out anything particular I don't like, maybe battery life could be better. Video card could be faster, but then again, they could ALWAYS be faster couldn't they.

I bought this laptop for my gf march 14th, that would be last week. If you look into the technical specifications, its pretty cool, allthough there are some thing I really find quite annoying, things I find stupid and things I haven't even got working yet.
Yesterday our screen began to flicker on the right side and it became worse as the seconds walked by. After 60 seconds you couldnt see anything on the screen, so we decided to shut it down for a minute and rebooted it right after, works fine now. It wasnt a heating issue, it was placed on the table.
The S-Video output doesnt work. I've been fixing and fiddling with it for hours now, no luck.
The VoIP phone software the AcerVCM was a pain to get working, it works now though.
My overall rating would be 7/10. I'll give it a week before I turn it in for a replacement. I bought it at work, so no problems at all getting a new one.
Cool regards, martin, Denmark -
I was wondering, how is the weight of it? Is it very portable (say... to university)?

its 3kg and I would give mine an 8/10 as its replaced my desktop very well and is extremely portable

really? extremely portable?? I don't have much experience with laptop weights, but... are you exaggerating a bit? it just seems like 6.6 lbs is kind of heavy although I have no idea... anyone else?? -
Bo@LynboTech Company Representative
I would consider a laptop heavy at 5kg.
of course extreme thin and light laptops go from approx 1.7kg upwards but they dont have the performance thats available from this machine.
Its not uncomfortable to carry around. So yes Compared to a 17" DTR its extremely portable -
9/10. Only knock is that it's kinda rickety when carrying it around with the screen open. Things shift.

well I've had my laptop for around a week now... and all I can say is wowieeeee!
This is my third laptop... the first was an acer a year back, then I bought a compaq in June, and now I bought this one, because I needed more power and memory for my development work.
It weighs around 3KG and is rather slim compared to the compaq I had, but slightly less portable than the previous Acer. Don't ask me the model number of that one... I forgot now!
I love the power this CPU gives me, and the flexibility that the 2GB RAM gives me... I was working on some heavy duty applications the other night, Netbeans, iTunes playing music, 4 firefox windows open, ObjectDock running, windowBlinds running, and one Word Document open... I thought about checking the system stats, and I was using around 1GB of memory, and the page file was 860MB. And was the system laggy? NO WAY! the system was just as responsive as it would be if there was just one application running! Now that's some SERIOUS power!
I played Doom3 and Half-Life2 demos, and HL2 was running smooth at 1280x800 resolution (mind you I have a clean winXP Pro install and Omega Drivers installed, but not tweaked). I didn't tinker with Doom3 that much because I haven't had the time, and Need For Speed:Most wanted runs smooth with almost all the settings up at 800x600... didnt try anything with that either!
I installed simplyMepis 3.4.3 in around 17 mins flat! XP Pro took slightly shorter. Everything seems to be running perfectly at this time too...
I like the screen, I find it better than the BrightView on my Compaq, and the Acer previously was a Matte Screen (I incline towards glossy now...).
Haven't yet carried it around school, but that'll happen from Tuesday... Spring Break's on you know!
Well as a testament, previously I used to have to wait on the system to complete my coding... and nowadays the bottleneck is my thought-process! geez... isn't that how it should be?! as soon as I think of something I should be able to put it up, and not have to wait on the computer! This satisfies my needs! I run eclipse too.. and man it's smooth now! :d
I have the one gripe that I guess everyone shares with me... it can get pretty HOT around the palmrests... so that is a major issue!verheat:
Overall... I like this.. I think I'm really gonna enjoy this system! My rating: 9/10 why...? dunno.. because it's not perfect, but then, what is?!
CHEERS! -
I am planning to buy this one.. I ordered the PRO version 1195 and then i realised i dont really need the PRO, so i cancelled that and I'm ordering the Home version (really short on money.. yup!!). But one thing that ppl kept talkin abt was the heat. Is it hard to have it on ur lap for a long time?
-
O also, i dunno what Omega drivers are. Could some1 let me know pls. I've seeen that mentioned a bunch of times, and how it helps. Also converting from Fat32 to NTFS. Is it a big process? Do I have to re-install windows to convert it? Wrong forum i know.. but its based on the 5672. Thanks guys..!

Superb specs, fully featured, (4 USBs, firewire, Bluetooth EDR, gigabit NIC etc etc) very fast, upgradeable processor (hopefully), lovely screen IMHO, decent weight/size, good wireless reception, Seagate hard drive (personally my favourite for support and cool/quiet operation), keyboard is...OK, usable power.
Gets very hot on the palm rests, and positively sizzles under the touchpad, wobbly plastic construction, poor Acer software, FAT32 partitioning, stupid recovery system, keyboard is...meh OK, DVD burner is HORRIBLE!!!
My 2 cents. -
Converting to NTFS is totally simple and does not require a re-install of Windows. Just read this: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/convertfat.mspx and follow the instructions. Very quick and easy. -
Thanx a bunch for the info intensecure.. altho after all those cons.. dunno whether to get it.. heat seems to be a maaaajor issue. wobbly plastic.. ouch.. (fall apart in a year, if its in a year atleast we can replace it).. and DVD burner is slow??? altho i thot the slot based system is nice.
-
Have to say that it depends what you want to use it for.
For me, it is very much a desktop replacement, with occasional travel, so I reckon the build quality is up to that. If I was a daily traveller, I really would buy something else.
Also to qualify, the DVD burner is slow (does not burn at the correct rated speed for many discs, and I have tried Sony, CMC, TDK, and even my best MCC003 Mitsubishis take 12 minutes to burn, instead of 8 on my LiteOn burner), cannot be made region-free (which is why I called it HORRIBLE, because I need region-free ability) So I will be swapping it out for a suitable replacement when I can find one.
Just look carefully at the alternatives, in a shop, directly comparing, because what you see is what you get.
PS - I still kinda like it though! -
I've had it for almost a month. I'm not an experienced laptop user, this is my 3rd one but my previous 2 were slow ones from years ago. So far I like it very much and I'd give it a 8.5/10. The issues I found so far were that it does get hot and the burner is indeed slow. These are not major issues for me, so I think it's great, and really you get a lot of features for the price. It is a very fast laptop, the core duo is pretty nice. The graphics card is pretty good also, and I play games with no frame loss. It was by far the best deal.
-
It's a nice machine!Pretty impressive for that price!
Acer software sucks!! Windows power management controls better the heating!
Good graphics, you can play all the new games with good quality and no frame drops!
The processor is upgradable!
Very nice pack for wireless solution:Bluetooth,Wireless LAN,Infrared!
Nice screen!
Score:8.8/10 -
I think the machine is great, based on using it daily for about a month. It isn't too heavy and it is powerful. I repartitioned, switched to NTFS, and upgraded to XP Pro. I'm running a virtual PC, too, and there is literally no problem with performance. The screen is awesome, the wifi and bluetooth work great, and the keyboard has a good feel. For the negatives, I'd love better battery life and the heat through the top and to the right of the unit is a bit much, but not unbearable. I'll go with an 8/10 from my experience.

I think the burner issue is related to the included software for burning discs, Nero gives me speeds up to 8x which is what its supposed to do.
left at default the drive burns @ 2x
and yes the laptop does get warm, maybe an indication for the user to take a break eh?!?!?
the heat is my only downside with the machine as anything software related can be dealt with.
However it is quite cold in the UK at the moment so I welcome the heat.....also there are laptop coolers that sit under the machine available, I think I might invest in one -
Don't worry about the build quality.. I had an acer before which was worse than this one in build, but it is being used by my dad extensively and everywhere, and there is absolutely no issue with the build after over a year. and yeah, this one is even sturdier than that one!
-
As for heat, I am in Malaysia - I really don't need wrist/hand warmers
I am using a Vantec2 cooler pad, which helps keep processor temps down by about 4C, and a couple of degrees of the HD temp as well, but does nothing for the wrist/touchpad area. I only mention this because there are some coolers out there with 3 fans, one of which is nearer the front - might be worth checking those out for maximum efficiency with this particular laptop.
Got to stop again - heat induced break! -
I've only owned the notebook for a day, but my initial rating would be about a 7/10. What i like about it first is the price to performance. Honestly there isn't another Core Duo notebook on the market right now with the same features at this price. The screen on this machine is beautiful, great colors, little ghosting, perfect size and so on. I've owned 2 15.4" notebooks in the past, and this one is by far the lightest and thinest i've owned, huge plus there. Performance is great for the price, could use a little beefier video card, but this was something i was willing to sacrafice.
Now for what i don't like about it. First off, no CD's that come with it?!? First thing i do when i get a notebook is reinstall windows. I expect to find the drivers on a restore disc, to my supprise there isn't one provided. This caused a minor setback as i needed to download the drivers on another machine and transfer them useing a USB drive since i had no net access. Not a big problem in my case, but it could have been. Next is the bloated, worthless Windows install they provide. Not even worth letting it all install before i was already formatting. Next, the USB ports on the side, i'm not a fan of that. Two on the side, and 2 on the back would be ideal, just a personal preference. The fan blowing on the side of a right handed mouse user? I'm not sure who thought of that, but pretty bad design, not to mention this thing gets just a tad hot. For my setup, i don't like the a/c adapter on the left side, but that's just because of the way i have my laptop setup, very minor annoyance there. Lastly, i don't like the audio ports in the front. That just doesn't work in so many ways. Lucky for me, i more than likely will never use them.
Overall i am immpressed with this machine. Mainly just aesthetics as far as gripes go. Build quality, performance and all that seem to be great so far. -
Good to hear all this, I just order mine. Gr8 value for the money. It should b here pretty soon. Yea, there are some complaints.. but hey.. u get what u pay for I guess. And in this case, maybe even a little more.(the 1.3MP cam, bluetooth.. etc).

I have had this laptop since February 2006, and while I was very happy at first, my opinion has changed a bit since.
Pros: lots of goodies such as input/output, etc.
Cons: HEAVY, runs hot to the touch (not warm, but HOT), flimsy case and build quality, no customer support.
Yesterday (04-2007), the power supply started shorting out, smelled like burning plastic, and stopped charging. I emailed Acer support and below is the response. Basically, they want $449 to replace a $30 power supply that is only 2 months past the 1 year warranty. My last laptop's power supply lasted 9 years! Buyer beware, you are on your own with Acer, and you get what you pay for!

I purchased this Acer laptop 14 months ago. The build quality is flimsy, the headphone jack gets static if you touch or move the cord. Yesterday, the power supply started shorting out, smelled like burning plastic, and stopped charging. I emailed Acer support and below is the response. Purchased in April 2007.
Outstanding laptop. Score 9/10.
This machine has 4 Usb port - which is not common. And its very useful.
An outclass graphics card.
processor can be upgraded.
you can upgrade memory to 4GB.
Screen is beautiful glossy and wide.
Very quite.
It has a very efficient system of heat dissipation.
and stays cool in all conditions. whether the load is high or low-temprature
reamins stable.
Vista runs beautifully.
but a point lost in speaker department - speaker performance dosent
match with the rest of the machine. I had JBL speakers in my last laptop.
And it really makes a difference.
Otherwise:
This laptop beats other brands in price plus gives extra in its class of
laptops.

hi
i think i come too late but i will rate mine
first of all i think i buy it because i need the 2 GB of ram really and i need a big hard drive
when i buy it i have to wait for more than 20 minute and leave it to install everything
then i was very impressed it's faster than my old acer 400% because my old one has celeron and 256 of ram and 40 GB of hard drive
for me the keyboard is comfortable
the temperature is not that big deal but you ca think and turn on your mind and think for positive thinks that can keep your computer cooler
for the battery it's not big deal for me and I'm waiting for the free battery
trust me you can safe your battery my battery is from june(time i buy the NB) and since know it's still can live for more that 2 hours with medium cpu speed Med.
the build quality is nice i have 2 problems with it
2 USB ports were dead and i solve the problem for just ~20$(but i think that it has 2 USB hubes one for right and one for left)
right speaker were dead also and i get replacement for ~30$
but i think that a normal with computers
i think i will rate it for 8.5/10
thanks -
Amazing Laptop especially considering the price. Purchased it last year. 80GB version with X1400 Radeon since I never play games, on PC, and only, temporarily, use a lot of hard disk space for video encoding. Very impressed with the responsiveness and sheer power of this model, so much, in fact, that it has completely replaced my desktop system, for personal use. The internals have been well thought out, too. I was, easily, able to upgrade the RAM and the CPU to Intel model T7600 (updated BIOS too). Now the system literally flies.
The only problems I had with the machine are the following:
Pre-installed software. I don't need most of that Acer stuff. You either need to unistall what you don't want, or do a fresh install from a Windows CD, since Acer only give a restore disk. I did the latter.
The amount of heat that the laptop generates. The wrist rest and touch pad can get uncomfortably hot, even when the machine is idle. I used Arctic Silver 5, on the CPU/GPU (removed their pointless thermal pads), when upgrading to T7600 and now the machine runs much, MUCH cooler. Sometimes, it's as if the machine isn't even on, when I'm doing simple tasks on it - very cool.
If 10/10 is perfect, then I give 9/10. The closest thing to an issue, the laptop had/has, is they poorly applied thermal pad, thus, poor heat dispersion even though the laptop is physically built to remove heat very effectively.
Owners of Acer 5672 WLMi..Rate it!
