is there much of a difference between the P8400 and P8600 in games?
also how do they compare to the T9400 in games?

Keep in mind that games rely primarily on the gpu, and NOT the cpu.
You would only experience a smaller boost in frame-rates (5 to 10 FPS ... which can be considered high gain actually) if the difference between the cpu's was 500Mhz or probably more.
As it is, the difference between P8400 and P8600 is 200 Mhz in terms of clock speed.
Difference between P8400 and T9400 is 300 Mhz.
Not really worth it either way and won't have a noticeable increase.
However, if you upgraded to say T9800 ... THEN there is a possibility you'd gain an increase of 5 to 10 FPS (depending) in games.

The most visible difference would be in programs that rely on the cpu for the most part (such as CAD, 3ds Max, Lightwae, Maya, etc ...).

If you want to upgrade, then wait for the prices to drop and get yourself T9800 if your chipset/socket support it.
But honestly, your cpu really won't be a bottleneck in games.

Doubt the T9800 will ever drop in price. Just stick with the P8400, it's more than enough for games.
