Does anyone know any good retailers, or online retailers in Canada (Toronto area) that sell Acer notebooks, at a great price. I want to get the Aspire 1681 but it seems to be sold out at most places I go.

    Hey Sugar_150,

Rather than looking at the 1681 (low battery runtime), why not look at the 4501WLMi? This unit is spec'd pretty much exactly the same as the 2012WLMI & 1681 series, but is rated to run 5hrs (8 cell battery). I think price is about the same $2199 for this unit. They sell at CompuSmart. There's a location in downtown Toronto & another in Scarborough. A few differences I noticed, $250 more, 40GB HDD, 8 cell battery, XP Pro. Do you think it's worth the extra $250 to get a system that will run longer (without buying extra batteries) and has XP Pro as a standard feature?

What's the difference between XP Pro and Home, I'm a student so i don't know if i really need XP Pro, What are the extra features. As well I'm gonna be pluged in most of the time, so i don't know if i need the extra battery. Plus i can get he Aspire 1681 for $1863.85 from grey tech (sold out). And the lowest price of the 4501 i've seen is $2040.50, but i'm trying to get a notebook that is just a little over $2000(max $200 over)Canadian with tax. So unless I can find it cheaper, i'm gonna have to stick with the 1681, unless you can come up with a better unit.

    Suger_150,

As Noikz listed off, XP Pro mainly has additional Networking and Security features that XP Home doesn't. If this will be used to log into a university network, you may want to get pro. I've read on this site that using XP Home may cause problems or may not log into a school network.

If you're gonna be connected all the time and don't plan on meing mobile much, then the 1681 would be a good unit to consider. Since the specs of the 1681 vs 4501 is mainly the battery, HDD & OS, everything else is the same (spec wise).

You can try getting the unit from the US and then ship/bring it over. I think a user got the 4501WLMi for $1300US, which is approx $1690CDN (30% exchange rate). I think if you were to add the taxes (15% in Ontario), you'd still be under $2000CDN, but I'm not sure if/how much duties will be added.

I've changed my mind, and I'm now looking at getting the 4501 instead, cause i like the security features on XP pro, also I found it for a great deal and it will only be about $134 differnce, and i think it's worth it for $2218 with tax.
