I have the DVD Dual Slimypetype thing on my laptop, and I can normally watch DVDs but then it turns out that some of them are nt readbale at all. II had like 20 DVDs last week and out of them 5 didnt work with my dirve. It kept skipping and the green light on the DVD kept blinking but never read it. But when I put them on my home theatre system on the DVD player it worked like a charm perfectly! I wonder why it was nt reading on my laptop drive. Anyone facing the same problem or have come accross a fix or somehting?

Are these DVD's you are having problems with burned or are they original retail stamped DVD's? If they're burned, it could be a compatibility problem with the disc type and drive. If it's a retail stamped disc, then it could just be that the drive is flakey. You may want to see if there's a new firmware upgrade for it and try upgrading.

Oh, one other question, did you by change run one of those RPC1 firmware patches on your drive? If so, that could be causing the problem.

Well these are normal retail DVD copies, but i got them from a cousin whos in asia who gets them cheap, if u know wat i mean. But wat i dont understand is how come it plays on my home theatre system and not on my DVD Drive on the laptop. And its only a handful of them that I am tlaking, others play reptty fine. I have nt changed the region of the drive as yet and its still set to none or default or somehing like that.

And by the way wats the RPC1 firmware? I have nt done anything to the drive, but was hoping to upgrade the frimware after doing a bit of research. The drive is the Slimtype SOSW-852S. Thanks for your current input though.

If they're from Asia, it's possible there might be a Region Lock on the discs. Therefore it'll only play on similar Region Coded drives or on a Region Free drive. Since these are "cheap" discs from Asia, the quality could also be lower and therefore causing problems on your notebook. It's possible your home theatre system just has better disc support than your notebook.

Personally, I wouldn't upgrade the firmware unless it's directly from the manufacturer. The "tweaked" firmwares that are not done by the manufacturers could lead to other problems (possibly not reading DVD's at all) and it's possible it may not be reversible. Therefore you're stuck with a non-working firmware and a drive the manufacturer will not fix (because you used a non-manufacturer supported firmware). That's just my opinion.
