My problem is about the fan. The fan turns on every other minute after it shut off during idle. The bottom of the notebook is a little bit warm but there is no problem to touch. I used the Intel Thermal Analysis Tool to measure the temperature of the CPU and I also used Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) to manage the power of my notebook.

I used Dynamic switching to minimize the power usage (use Intel speedstep)and to achieve lowest temperature possible.

I have attached screen shots for the lowest and highest tempatures (during idle in room temperature around 22C) that are measured by Intel Thermal Analysis Tools and NHC.

I notice there are actually different fan speed settings build-in into the hardware. During idling, the fan will only turn at the lowest setting. If I use the intel thermal analysis tools to push the cpu to 100%, then the fan turns at significant higher speed and make much louder noise.

Is my notebook defective? should I return the notebook because of the fan turn on every other minute after it shuts off. Is my notebook overheating?

Is there anyway to control the fan if my notebook is not defective except writing ACPI program in NHC to control the fan speed? I tried speedfan and it didn't work.

Thank you very much and your help is very much appreciated.

    Best,
    Al

    your notebook is fine.
    not defective.
the fan only turns on when it need to.
    perfectly normal
    however, i have one question.
maybe someone can tell me if the new 5400rpm harddrives all make -clicking- noises.. while idling and accessing...
because i just tried 3 different laptops.. and they all result in the same clicking noise, that is not present in the 7200rpm drives.. or the older 4200rpm...
    plz advise?! lol
    thanks^^

I have a 5040 (see signature) and I'm having the same "problem." There's no pattern to the clicking either, it can happen every few seconds, or every couple of minutes; and it doesn't matter if I'm idling or working on something! Weird ...

    yea.. it is weird..
    b/c i tried 2 gateway laptops, AND 2 as5050..
all but 1 gateway resulted in the clicking noise..
and i think the reason that gateway did not result in the clicking is because i returned it before the problem occured =P
