I'm trying to install Vista on a new hard drive for a Acer Aspire 5100. From what I researched, I believe I need to create the PQSERVICE partition. I'm trying to retrieve the 'Post Acer Disk Formatter CD ISO Image'. I believe it is a file named 'Diskformatdt_v1-1d.iso'. I read some of the threads on this website about how to retrieve the file from Acer's website, but I am not having any luck doing so.

Here are the instructions left by another user on how to retrieve the file:

    1) Go to http://www.acerpanam.com/
    2) Choice your country
    3) In Drivers & Downloads clic in more...
    4) Select your product (in my case was Aspire 5000)
    5) In the end of list have a file name "Post Acer Disk Formatter CD ISO
    Image"
    6) Download this file, burn a CD-ROM with it.
    7) Put in CD-ROM drive on Acer PC and press F2, and change to star
    using CD-ROM.
    8) Only use Next-Next-Next.... and this program wil create the
    PQSERVICE partition
    9) Next put yours recovers factory CD/DVD and return to the zero mark.

When I follow step #1 and copy that address, this link loads up instead ( http://support.acer.com/) and if go to the driver downloads section and put in my Acer unit info, I can't find any option to get the Post Acer Disk Formatter CD ISO Image.

Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

    1) What happen to the old hard drive ?

    2) If you are a legal owner , you can always contact ACER , as soon you register the laptop at the ACER site .
And ask for their direct help .

Yes we can give advices , but the distribution of ACER software , its their matter .

The computer was originally purchased by the father of my step kids. I'm trying to repair it for them, however I have no way of getting any of the missing hardware or software. The computer (out of warranty) came to me without a hard drive, cracked screen, no power cord or any software. I fixed the hardware issues and contacted Acer and received the recovery discs. However, none of the three discs from Acer will autoboot after setting the Bios to boot from the cd drive. That's why I think that I need to get this hidden partition (pq service) installed before I can install a new OS on the system. Thanks.

The DVD's should boot with a bare drive installed without any partitions.
the hidden partition is the default with a new system where you can burn the recovery disk's from. Now if you don't have a bootable DVD or where there are problems booting from the DVD, you may be able to boot and repair from the hidden partition. Problem then lies in if you can't boot from the recovery DVD's you may not be able to boot from a DVD that will make the recovery partition............

Have you verified that the optical drive is working? Try booting the laptop with a known bootable CD/DVD [Ubuntu CD/XP install CD you have laying around that works on other computers]. It's possible that the optical drive isn't working properly.

There is no case of damaged optical drive , that cause issues to boot-able media.

Bad copies of the true ACER media could possible suffer .. from issues .

Any way .... i do have a copy of DiskFormatDT_V1-1D.iso

but its a large file ... not easily transferable .

I'm only saying that the OP needs to check two things. The first...verifying that the oprical drive works properly. The second...verifying that the disc works properly.
Obviously the optical drive, if bad, will not boot any bootable media [good or bad].
You can check the optical drive by inserting a bootable disc that works on other computers, and you can check the boot disc by inserting [and booting into it] on another computer.

If I misunderstood you, please let me know.
