I currently have two Acer laptops, an Aspire 5630 laptop and an Aspire One Netbook. The power adapter for the 5630 is a bit bigger (i.e., the "black box in the middle of the power cord) than the one for the netbook. The adapter for the netbook won't charge the 5630, however, when I plug in the adapter for the 5630 into the netbook, it says "charging" and seems to be charging the netbook fine. My question is whether this could do any damage to netbook or the netbook battery. I'd appreciate any info that anyone may have.

Probably. Look at the ratings on that "black box in the middle of the power cord" for each one. Unless they match exactly, don't mix and match them.

They are both 19 volt, the only think different is the amperage. The one for the netbook is much lower than the one for the 5630.

Lets do the dialog in one correct base .
    We have too functions .
The laptop operation ... and the laptop charging.

The Powerful Power Adapter will do both.

The weak one , will possibly do only the charging one.

When charging, the battery has internal electronics, that controls the charge.
The laptop has nothing to do with batteries charge.

Last factor about charging or not , are the size of the main pin ( laptop power plug).
Some ACER models like my , has very thin one, and needs special ACER compatible Power Adapter, with this special plug on it.
The special thin type power plug, is not commercially available.
ACER uses it , and HP in some models .

It might cause damage. Too much power mybe bad for the laptop with the broken ac adapter. More power could mean more heat

They both have the exact same pin size. My understanding re amperage is it should not make a difference. It just means the bigger one is able to put out more amps. It's not necessarily doing so though. At least that's what I've heard. Doesn't look like there's a definitive answer though.

Dear user , i am electrician and electronics engineer ...

I worry most for the weak power pack , if you force it to run the powerful laptop.

And this is my definitive answer .

In order to avoid damage , do not MIX them ... another definitive answer of my.

Thanks for this Kiriakost. I'm really not concerned about the weak power pack and am only interested in using the strong power pack on my netbook. The weak power pack is made for my netbook, but I'd like to also use the strong power pack for my netbook so that I can have a second charging option. It seems from your posts that this should not present a problem. Is this right?
