Anyone else have one? If so did you have any problems? Do you have any benchmarks done? What do you like about it???

Update there is only 1 pcie m.2 for storage out of the 3 total. The port with the ssd in it is the pcie port.

There is a total of 3 fans, and as the advertising may tell you that it's all about the aero fan, well the aero fan is the gpu fan. The other are big plastic fans not metal like the gpu fan.

Here is an awesome breakdown of the internals on this beast.

Dang no one??? Well I received mine today and wow talk about quality. Very well built

Ok so I've had an EVGA SC17, MSI GT73vr with the 1080 had to return both due to well, issues. I bought them both from Amazon wearhouse for a major discount so I can't complain. I've also been an Alienware fan for years I had the Alienware 17r3 which I gave to my 6yr old son and I wanted to try something new. Since I had bad luck with the MSI and EVGA, which I really like I thought I'd try this Predator 17x... oh I also, had an Aorus X7 V6 and it's nice but that screen is horrible color and every thing about that screen sucks. Well so far so good with the 17x this thing is a beast it reminds me of the EVGA SC17 laptop, as in how well it's built "like a tank". It's heavy, but man is it well built it looks like it's all one piece. The soft touch is soooooo very nice. I can't get over how well built it is and in some ways beautiful. Now the power is crazy it puts that MSI GT73vr I had to shame. I was very surprised about that. Out of the box fire strike was 15606 the msi was 14545. Now when I OC the 17X it went to 17567 crazy I really like this laptop and it's build quality and power.

Oh wanted to add also, the MSI had amazing sound for a laptop then I tried the 17X and it blew the MSI away in sound quality.

    Cheapest GTX 1080 Gaming Notebook?
    Acer Predator GX-792-7448
    Full Review

Reviewer missed mentioning there is a 2nd M.2 header just next to the installed M.2 driver connector, to the right and above - it would mount about 1/4" above the installed M.2 - you can see this when he takes off the whole bottom shell - he video's the area and shows the 2nd connector but he doesn't say anything...

The laptop seems to be a great contender against the other 1080 laptops, better price at the lowest configuration, and has lots of good features - like 3 quiet fans - first time I've seen an intake fan at the front to help air flow over the rest of the parts which should really help stability and long term surviveability :)

How are you guys enjoying yours? Im considering buying this laptop but im worried about thermals and if the 7700HQ will be a bottleneck for the GPU.

MSi is expensive compared to competition, but their internal cooling and hardware design is superior.

I'd take the BH model and sell the SSDs if you're strapped for cash, the 7820HK is a well worth investment.

BH also don't charge tax if you live outside of NY and NJ.

You wouldnt happen to know what panel the Predator uses would you? Trying to figure out what the response time is.

I think I found it. 25ms response time which is kind of disappointing. I believe its the same panel on the GL702VS I currently have that I am about to return and it exhibits moderate ghosting. Specs list it as a 60hz, but i believe they have a factory OC of 75hz. Can be OCed up to 100hz safely but the 25ms response time is crippling.

That's pretty standard response time for 17.3" IPS.

To get faster you need TN panel's, which have their own drawbacks - I prefer IPS unless 120hz TN or above - even so the TN needs to be wide-gamut and have correctable color.

That Predator w/7820HK is a much better performance choice than a 7700HQ, but you might not notice the difference anyway, as with a 1080 the FPS will be high enough for G-sync at 60/75hz - probably even at 100hz OC.

    IDK why MSI isn't putting only 7820HK's with 1080's - which would be a better fit...Alienware had 7700HQ + 1080's only too.

I agree. Thats why I'm starting to lean towards the MSI.. Its a significant jump in price but I may just plunk down on the MSI GT73VR w/ 7820hk & 1080 with the 120mhz 5ms panel. I've been reading a lot of reviews on that panel and people seem really impressed with its color production and gamut once calibrated. I think 2800 is pretty steep for the laptop but I want to make sure I'll be happy with it long term.

I have a ROG Swift on my desktop at home and even though its a 144hz TN panel, I've been very happy with it.

    That's the sweet spot currently for MSI, the GT73VR + 7820HK + 1080 :)

The 7820HK OC'd to 4.2ghz-4.5ghz (depending on luck), should help push 144hz to your external monitor too.

Please come back and let us know how it works out :)

Hi Guys, I'm currently looking into this laptop right now, since I can't afford the MSI in my country, too expensive here, but this one is a lot more affordable. I've read all the reviews and videos but I can't seem to find a small piece of data. I'm looking at the one with 7820HK and the GTX 1080.

    1) Now from all the benchmarks and reviews I've watched, running PredatorSense in Turbo Mode will overclock both CPU and GPU, no toggle for just one of them?

    2) On Turbo for both, benchmarks state that there's thermal throttling as it can reach up to 98c on the CPU only, however there's no real world gaming data. I want to know if the temps reach that threshold on longterm gaming. Lets say you play Witcher 3 or GTA V or even Watch Dogs 2 for more than 3 hours, does the CPU temps reach 90c?

Your input would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks :)

    1) there is no option to overclock them seperatly.

    2) Temps stay under 90c if you dont overclock it here is witcher 3 after running 1 hour with maximum fan(1080p ultra setting+ reshade sweetfx) . With the highest overclock option i hit 87-99 c

Do you have a backpack or bag for this beast? I just got mine a little while ago and have been struggling to find a backpack for under $200 that I know will fit it... I bought a Targus Strike thinking that it would fit, but apparently 17.3" bags don't fit these beasts...

I was looking at the 7700HQ version of this that's $1999 at MicroCenter. The 7820HK model appears to have been discontinued - the only place I can find it is Amazon where it's $2700 (plus tax). Doesn't seem worth it for that kind of price difference.

Can you please post links to both?

There must be more to differentiate them for that price difference than the CPU. :)

The 7820HK model has 32 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage, versus the 7700's 16 and 256, respectively. Nice value adds, but again nothing I'd deem absolutely necessary given the $700 difference.

The 7700HQ is on "SALE" at Microcenter for $500 off :)

    $2,499.99 SAVE $500.00
    $1,999.99

That's the difference, the other $200 to get to $2,699.99 is parts.

You need to find the 7820HK model at $2,699.99 on sale for $500 off, maybe call and ask Microcenter webcenter to see if they will be carrying it and putting it on sale soon.

And, watch for online sales elsewhere. :)

The 7700HQ version has been $1999 for weeks. The strategy here seems to be following the Kohl's model - have a crazy high MSRP then perpetually put it on sale so that people think they're getting a deal. And a deal it certainly is - you can't find any brand-new laptops with a GTX 1080 for that kind of money.

As I said before, the 7820HK model is not available anywhere but Amazon right now, and I'm sure once they go out of stock there, you won't be seeing it again. B&H says it's been discontinued, and Adorama Camera says it's no longer available.

Yeah, EOL laptop pricing is usually like that. The lower end model(s) left in stock are being moved at heavy discount to get them out of inventory. Top end models are hard to find and everyone with them are sitting on them at full MSRP waiting for them to hatch (sell).

It's up to you, buy what you want at full price, or settle for a little less performance for a lot less.

Or, wait for the new generation to ship :)

Just bought the 7700HQ model for $2K at microcenter. Planning to set up a dual boot configuration (Ubuntu 16.04). I'm wondering if instead of dividing the 256gb ssd into 128gb per OS, I'd be better off adding a second 256gb ssd and putting Ubuntu on that one. Although it could turn out to be sufficient, 128gb seems so small. Have any other owners of this laptop set up a dual boot config? If so, any thoughts on whether putting Ubuntu on a separate ssd is worth the cost? Or will the system utilize the 1tb hdd efficiently enough to make 128gb per OS sufficient (i.e., no significant performance lag)? Thanks.

    Hey.

I'm also looking at this machine. However, there are mostly reviews of the models with the 1070 online. Considering how much problems people have been having with the 1080 in other laptops, what is the opinion of those with experience with this machine? I am also tempted by the Alienware 17 r4 but the minimum 1080 config is for $2300. It does have the graphics amp port and a 120 HZ gsync display, though I think I will have sold this machine by the time I need that port.

Just picked one of these up at microcenter for 2000. Awesome build quality. Temps on the CPU and GPU are also insanely cool. Very happy I went with this over the Alienware 17. Also, 1080P at 75hz with a GTX 1080 should plow through anything for a very long time.

Max I've seen in benchmarks for the CPU is around 70C and GPU around 69C. This is gaming benchmarks only, no stress tests. Very impressive.

They're refurbished, but Amazon has the 7820HK model for under 2 grand. I've been trying to decide what to buy for a while now, think I'm going to risk the refurbished hardware and go for it. I'll test the temps adequately in the first 3 months while they are still warrantying it, and send it back if it's running unacceptably hot.

Why does Acer lock these laptop's into RAID 0?

Hi. Got one from MicroCenter few weeks ago and noticed some problems:
1 - while playing games like whitcher 3 or metro ll laptop is slowly discharging ~15% per hour. it become into charging state after ~20 minutes of playing.

2 - if lightly shake laptop its making noise like something inside hitting botom near main cooler and subwoofer. so i like to open bottom but scares to lost warranty.

    maybe this problem are connected
    if somebody met this problems?
i left country so cant bring device back to shop now.

1 - This feature is constant with their gaming products, basically the hardware gets its power from both the plug and the battery so the AC adapter doesn't heat up as much.

2 - There might indeed be something loose inside. The Predator is relatively easy to open, so there shouldn't be any problem checking.

I've had the laptop for a year now, and I can say, the dust buildup inside is very small compared to other laptops I've had in the past (ASUS G73JH & ASUS G750JZ). Their dust cleaning really does work to a certain point, and the steel fans on the 2 main components run relatively clean. The CPU and GPU paste suck though. It has been constantly reaching 95degrees celcius on CPU and 90 degrees on GPU after around 8-9 months, this is in an air-conditioned room and not even stress testing, just regular gaming. So after it's 1 year, I decided that its time to clean and repaste the beast. Cleaning was easy, as I said, dust buildup was relatively small. Repasted with Thermal Grizzly Kryounaut and BAM, 30degress celcius down. I ran from 95/90 to 65/60 with max temps of 75/73 on stress.

TLDR: The predator is easy to clean with small dust buildup due to it's exhaust tech, and a repaste is a must after a few months.

Hi Guys, just got Acer Predator 17 X from Micro Center with best deal for now. Awesome laptop with good design and quality.

Only concern is full load stress test, cpu temp went up to 95C. I might need re-paste sooner or later.

I just got Acer Predator 17 X. Overall design and build are very satisfied, however only concern is stress test. CPU temp went up to 95 as you mentioned.

I am going to repaste Grizzly kryonaut soon. Any concern about it ?

By the way what do you think of Grizzly Conductonaut over Kryonaut? and what is BAM you mentioned ?

Sorry for the late reply, didn't notice there was a question for me. The Kryonaut is safer than the conductonaut which is liquid metal, any mistakes there and you could fry your CPU/GPU instantly, I wouldn't recommend doing it. BAM was just a term for like BOOM! lol. It's relatively easy to repaste so make sure you just do it slowly but surely. :)

No problems at all, just the thermal paste which degrades over time, if you're confident enough to repaste or find a service to do it for you, then you're all good to go.
