The computer crashed during a windows update and now i keep getting a blue screen of death that states "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" I try the alt + F10 method to do a system recovery but it does not work either. Can anyone help?

You boot and you keep getting a BSOD ?
What is the STOP CODE shown in the BSOD ?

Try Last known good config (press F8 for the options)

Oh yeah forgot about it. Do you have another computer (I guess you do). First, run Memset86+ to test the memory.
And before that, boot with a single module of ram, or interchange the slots. This error is actually not registered on MSDN, and such errors are mostly memory-related or driver-related (not sure!!).

If you have the windows CD, try running a REPAIR install.

You can also get a Linux LiveCD, boot through it, and try running some diagnosis in it, regarding the windows registry and stuff, try getting the minidumps out from the windows folder.

Or, you can get a USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA cable, connect your HDD externally to another computer. Copy off all the data, and do a clean install.

Have you got vista, try running a repair install through the Vista DVD.

that answer lies in the MBR,, or more accurately, the fact that your MBR is no longer the ACER MASTER BOOT RECORD. i'm guessing that you have done a CLEAN INSTALL in the past using a WINDOWS XP disk. if that is the case, your original MBR has been replaced by the default MBR from microsoft.

another way the MBR could have changed would be if you had setup a DUAL BOOT system in the past. All boot-loaders tell the PC how & where to look for the file required to start loading each different OS. and in the case of ACER laptops, the MBR also looks for the ALT + F10 keystroke and then loads from the RESTORE PARTITON when the correct keys are pressed at the right time...

there are some threads on here about restoring the original ACER MBR files, but it seems a little on the technical side, and i've never tried tried to do it.

search for RESTORING ACER MBR in the fisrt search in my siginature..

I found this link today. Check it out. I guess it'll solve your problem, but is a bit complicated at #2. It'll provide details regarding the error code + the solution ;). (Looks pretty straight-forward to me)

So what are you planning to do ??
Install XP with a XP CD ??

Do you need to get the data off that HDD ??

Does the Acer recovery thing give an option to repair vista ??

OK thanks kiriakost for that linky to a recovery cd. I booted up the acer with it and BAM i got a BSOD again. Same stop code and all. To Andy, i was not able to do a clean install using Windows XP the computer kept giving me an error saying "Operating system not found". I think im just going to have to send the comp back to acer. Luckily it is my mom's computer and neither i nor she has any data on it (it was a bday present for her to have something to surf the web).

if you look up that error ms knowledge base it say to format laptop but you don,nt have to do that if do what post the link above

also after sp1 this error does.nt not exist any more

you don,nt realy need vista repair disk you can burn boot able linux cd and remove the files it is kind technail so might be easy for get usb hard disk case use diffent machine to backup you data

you can use f8 and do start up repair that shoundbe prreinstall on acer laptop at factorey

Well, using F8 used to work but now it does not. Any way when i used F8 before the same error message came up no matter what option i chose (ie Safe mode or Repair). So i am stuck, maybe its hardware or something i dunno

It is not a H/W fault. The Common Log File System Driver has been corrupted, due to which windows gives a BSOD everytime it is about to mount a file system. If its hard for you to fix, you'll be better off sending it back to Acer, since they will be having a Vista DVD, and won't have much trouble fixing it. It actually has a very simple solution, but needs to be fixed from 'outside' windows due to which it is not properly acknowledged in the MS database.

Ok lets simplify the picture ...

We have one healthy laptop , and known Vista made disaster .

It would made more sense to me , to ask an OS replacemant with the old and booletproof XP Pro or even XP HOME .

Your mom will not understand a deference , and the drivers and software for them are totally stable this days ..

As long the problem are clearly caused by Microsoft .
I could say that you are in the wrong forum . :)

Friendly advice , stay to XP for now .

What sort of problem is it, what you've said is a bit vague.
