    Hi,
I'm experiencing a few problems after recently upgrading my memory, and am looking for some guidance!
First of all, here is my laptop's specs before the upgrade:
    - Intel Core i5-2410m 2.3ghz
    - NVIDIA GT540m
    - 4GB DDR3 Memory
    - 500gb HD

I bought a Crucial 4gb RAM module to upgrade the laptop to 8gb.
Here are the problems I am experiencing so far:

    - Whenever I close the lid to hibernate, opening it and pressing the power button (to wake up the laptop) will turn it off completely; I get a 'Windows did not shut down successfully' error message when I turn it back on.

    - After turning it on, sometimes after typing in my password to load the desktop I will get a black screen with the mouse pointer visible (CTR+ALT+DEL) is ineffective here, but the keyboard works as I can turn off the screen with the shortcut.

    - If I don't get the permanent black screen above, I will get one which lingers for about 10 seconds before loading the desktop background (before upgrade the background would be there straight away)

There may well be other problems, but I haven't found them yet. Anyway, having to write this in Safe Mode which does work, so could really do with some assistance! Will be very grateful to anyone who replies, and will gladly answer any questions.

Other notes: I'm sure the RAM is the correct type, although I did have trouble fitting it initially, and currently the new module is where the old was one, and the old one is in the second slot.

Again, thanks in advance for any help!

UPDATE: Just removed the extra RAM, so now it's exactly how it was when it was working perfectly yesterday... except it's not perfect. I turned it on normally, and to my surprise the black screen appeared again, so I must have done something detrimental. Anyway I beared it, and eventually got up the task manager, after clicking on which brough up the taskbar and soon after the desktop. This is still very irregular, and I need to get to the bottom of this. Incidentally, MSE just detected a couple of threats so could this all be a terrible coincidence, and the problem is linked to a virus? I don't know.

I've had some of the same problems (and I never touched the hardware in mine). I believe it came from a win update. When I restored to an earlyer date I was fine again

Oh okay; that could make sense, seeing as I updated yesterday and haven't had the opportunity to test it, til after upgrading ram.
Could you describe what problems you had previously? And how simple is a restore?
    Thanks for your reply!

I had the two first problems you described.
The restore was easy in my case. In controlpanel click on restore (directly translatet from norwegian. Dont know if its really called that in english version). You should get a little window with a few possible restore-dates.

Thanks for your replies; I have restored it to before the 'Critical Update', but my problem still seems to persist - however it is not as bad as I first thought. It doesn't actually take too long to load up the desktop anymore, but the shutting down after hibernation is continuing. I think I will create a new topic with a new title, because it doesn't seem to be the RAM's problem anymore, so maybe some more people will have some idea's?
