    Hello, everyone:

Been searching around for help, and have decided to start a new thread and ask here.

I picked up an open box 5610-2273 at Best Buy for a great price. Problem is that whoever had it before replaced the Acer copy of Vista with a retail copy, which wants to be activated, and is missing all the Acer tools, drivers and other things.

He also wiped out the Acer MBR. ALT-F10 is a no-go. Best Buy is of no help- it's either refund, or I'm on my own. Acer's support has been completely unhelpful (at least up to now).

I have unhidden the service partition with PTEDIT, by changing it from type 27 to 07, and found and moved the MBRWRWIN executable and the MTMBR.BIN file over to the C drive root. There are also a number of other MBR.BIN files of various similar names on this machine, so I am not sure that this is the right one to move over. Is it? How would I know?

Problem: MBRWRWIN fails when I try to save the existing MBR (it says it can't), and fails when I try to write MTMBR.BIN, with "error writing the specified file" (or something to that effect).

Also, I noticed that when I changed the partition type of PQSERVICE back to type 27, it now remains unhidden. Vista can see it. Huh?

I want to restore this laptop to original condition so that I can make restore discs, and get on with my life!

    My questions are:

    1) How can I be sure that I am restoring the correct MBR image?

    2) Why is MBRWRWIN failing, and how can I solve this issue? Is there another tool I can use to do the same thing?

    3) What other possible solutions does anyone have? The restore partition appears to be completely intact.

    4) What is 6 times 7? (Just kidding.)

    5) Why is the service partition remaining unhidden after I have changed its type back to 27?

Appreciate everyone's input and help. I hope to become an unidiot as soon as possible. Thanks, everyone!
