This (QSI SDW-042) is the most ridiculous dvd writer I have EVER seen. Before firmware upgrades, I couldn't even get the writer to finish writing a blank Memorex DVD+R, now that I've got the firmware upgrade, I can manage to get the process to complete 100%, but it just churns out coasters. They all come back out as 'blank discs' according to Nero InfoTool and I can't access the disc at all. This is ridiculous! Anyone have tips with it?

First thing I would do is try a different brand of media. Just cause it says Memorex on the box, that doesn't mean they made them. You can use DVD Identifier to find out who made the discs:

    http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Some Memorex media is very good and some is very bad. I would try some Taiyo Yuden. They are made in Japan and are of the highest quality. You can find them here:

    http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=R&Product_Code=1733-50&Category_Code=DVDPLUSR

I would also try and updating the ide drivers. Sometimes older drivers cause problems. What other software besides Nero are you using? If you have any other burning software installed, get rid of it. Hope this helps.

I've tried Mitsumi and Memorex DVD's now, and both don't work. I read on another forum about QSI not being compatible with most dvd's, but I can't find an actual list. I've got the OEM NTI DVD writer software, in addition to Nero 6. I can't even burn cds with nero, it gets stuck @ 11% completion, but at least with NTI, I can burn cds. Actually, DVD completion can complete, and so can data verification, but for some reason, the dvd can't be read at all.

I got a LiteOn external burner for my Thinkpad. It is the worst reader ever. It burns decent, but only with the RecordNow that came with it. I tried Nero, CDBurnerXP, Deepburner, Prassi Ones amongst others. All failed. If the drive is picky, I'd still recommend using some Taiyo Yudens. They really are the best media. If doesn't work with them, maybe it is defective.

Thanks for the tip on the taiyo yudens, but to be honest, I have about 80 blank dvds at home that I can use, and since i have a writer in my desktop, I could always transfer files to my desktop :) I wish I could find that list of compatible dvds though, has anyone heard of it?

Hello aron!Someone in the cdfreaks.com forum said that they have managed to burn 8x DVD-R RITEKG05 disks (RiDATA)...try also site www.dvdidle.com you and download DVD-regional free program if you want to read dvds from other areas..haven't tried these hints 'cause I don't own a laptop yet but I'm thinking of buying the same machine(only little faster 1682Lmi-model from Finland)) as you and I hope that the dvd-writer issue is the only problem with this laptop..hopefully it is a problem that can be solved..Could you report back to me if there is any progress with the problem?

    Hi ozzy81,

I contacted Acer about it, and they were quick to give me some troubleshooting tips, which, sadly, didn't work. They said if I tried all the software solutions, they could send someone to pick it up and get it back to me in 7-10 business days with a replacement dvd drive which could either be a pioneer, liteon, or qsi again. Since I can't afford that downtime for now, I decided to live with this problem for now and perhaps get it fixed later on.
