    Hello,

a few months ago, I've bought an Acer Aspire 1640 notebook and have to say, that I'm very pleased with it, but currently I'm experiencing problems with the CD/DVD drive of the notebook.

The problem is, that I have to hit the open-button more than once until the tray comes out and the same goes for trying to open the tray with the "eject"-function implemented in some programmes. Another problem is, that the drive won't recognize CDs/DVDs, although the tray has been properly closed (the DVDs/CDs work fine on other devices!). So, when I tried to extract an audio CD (not one of the newer copy-protected ones - so this isn't the problem either), it extracted some of the first minutes, then inserted silence (as disk source was obviously unreadable), and then continued to include the audio data.

I'm currently unable to judge, whether this is just a software problem, or if I have a serious problem with my hardware. I wonder, if anybody else has ever experienced this problem? I should add, that I'm using the pre-installed Win XP, so the drive shouldn't be locked at any time (as it happens in Linux). Maybe somebody here has some advice. Would be very appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Stefan
