Hi! Last week I bought an Aspire 5634 in Spain and when starting the notebook for the first time I chose Win MCE in Spanish (I had English and Portuguese too). Now, the problem(s) is that the OS is in Spanish (most of it) but some error messages (from the OS) appear in English.

Besides I installed the 70 high priority and 10 optional Win updates from the Win updates site, and I have several error messages as "Application Failure iexplore.exe 7.0.5730.11 in 0.0.0.0 at offset 00000000" or "epower_dmc.exe 0.0.6.6 in 0.0.0.0 at offset 00000000" or "Faulting application wuauclt.exe, version 5.8.0.2469, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2945, fault address 0x000edf9c." or "Faulting application logonui.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2945, fault address 0x000edf9c.".

I am really worried because of logonui.exe and wuauclt.exe... I even had to edit boot.ini and put the DEP in AlwaysOff to avoid having error messages all the time. Even when I downloaded IE7 in Spanish, it didn't install because a message appeared telling me that my OS was not in Spanish!!! I downloaded it in English and it worked! Unbelievable!

I reinstalled Win MCE from the hidden partition using the ALT-F10 option but it didn't let me choose the language - it automatically chose Spanish again. Not misteriously, even after having installed the new OS the errors continued. And when errors appear for one application they appear for every application I start. The only way is to reboot the machine.

Yesterday, with a friend we installed the OS in his new Acer (I recommended him to select English, what he did) and everything ran smoothly...

So, does anyone knows how to edit or do something to the hidden partition to let me select English as the OS language or anyone has any solution that does not requires to reinstall the OS? Is it a OS problem or a hardware problem?

    Thanks!

What's weird is that the same ting happened to my bros 5672wmli with MCE. He's blaming me for ****ing it up because I used Windows update like you. Right now he is in the middle of no where for University and he doesn't want to reformat everything. Now he gets error messages and the notebook takes forever to shutdown.

I think all this **** has to do with acers stupid fat32 partition. They shouldn't of cheap out for not giving the xp install cd.

If you want to get rite of the problems, you should just change the partition back to ntfs and delete it. But first do this from ssx

    for the extra keys.

I made the conversion of the C: and D: to NTFS. What you're telling me is to install a Win MCE 2005 OEM version and put the keys I found in the hidden partition?

I wouldn't like to do that, as the computer is not mine, but my girlfriend's and she would like to have the recovery and use it if there are problems (like a virus, etc...). I know, I know... And your brother had MCE in English or in another language like me?

I have been googleing around and some people say that the problem is with the Logitech webcam software. Any idea of that? The problem is that I haven't the Acer with me right now and my girlfriend is like your brother, she's blaming me for nothing... :S

Is it possible to do a clean install of Windows MCE from the partition? As in without all the factory crap software?

No, I mean reformatting the whole hard drive or wiping out the partition too and than reinstall windows with a install cd (retail or oem as long as you have the key) with all the languages of your choice. The acer partition is doing more harm then good because it includes all the crap wares every time you use it. To be in the safe side you can make backup disks with the erecovery. It doesn't make sense if every time you try to update windows, it screws it up. That can be a security hazard since you can't update windows.

Nacho, in ssx's article he talks about how the default language are set by the hardware and bios, so when you buy the notebook from Spain, you only get the Spanish defaults because the OEM partition is for Spain. The only way to get Portuguese is to get a windows install cd with your language and reinstall without the acer partition.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=76670

As you read on, he talks about how there are different regional .inf files to tell the bios what language to install in.

"What this means is your internal parts determines what version of the operating system you get (you don't get to choose)." From ssx.

If someone can shed more light into this please go ahead.

Thanks for the reply. I am already trying to find an OEM install CD to use my product key with, I don't like all the partitions and wouldn't use them so want rid. Might have to wait till my Vista disc arrives from Acer though.

Installed a new XP Home version (bye Acer recovery) with one of the Acer keys (though I couldn't activate it) but automatic updates downloads worked. I proceeded to install everything (drivers and after that updates) and errors continued although it was a completely different OS!!!

I reinstalled the XP Home, and after installing drivers I installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86), Net Framework 1.1 SP1, Net Framework 2 and 3. Then I proceeded to update, after that installing applications, KIS 6 and everything worked smoothly... any idea??!?!?

Now I am waiting for the SSX guide to make a new XP in order not to activate it if not I won't have any OS... :(
