I looked and found that the main differences between the 5050 and the 3050 are the CPUs, HD size and some other tid-bits. Both seem to have the socket S1 and have the same mobo and vid chip-set, just different processors. Can you change out the CPU? Is the 3050 ready for dual-core?
I had posted earlier about my optical drive going bad and Acer helped out allot, the new drive works well, but I bought a LG drive and will store the stock one along with the HD. I bought a WD 80gb 5400rpm drive for it, and tested loading XP pro on a extra drive and used 90% of the drivers for the 5050 and it worked very well, I just needed .NET 1.1 to run the Acer E-programs (the ATI drivers installed .NET 2.0).
