I'm considering purchasing either the Acer 1681 or 4501 series notebook. Does anyone know if its possible to upgrade the processor down the road to a faster dothan cpu? thanks

I don't see any issues upgrading the CPU. Since most new units no longer have the CPU soldered onto the mainboard, it should pop out fairly easily. It's just a matter of getting to the CPU which will be the difficult part. I haven't found any places currently selling Dothan CPU's just the older Banias.

A user mentioned that in Asia, a new 3202 model has been released and it has a 725 1.6Ghz Dothan CPU. So, I'm sure they're using the same systemboard.

I have also looked for verification that the uP can be upgraded, but can not find it. A little frustrating.

I really think VB is right, though. even though Acer does say on it's Web site some place that all the uPs for their systems are soldered on and therfore not upgradable, but that does not line up with what folks in the industry say is common practice.

A link to prices for Dothan 755, 2GHz, 2MB cache, is below.

Retail specs. Note unit is complete with fan and heatsink, socket defined:

Just waiting for the price to drop to $200 or so.

I am also curious about this.
By the way, www.newegg.com sells new in box Dothan chips.

    Thanks.

yes, as cloud said, they do but they are almost 250 dollar apart each starting at $300 anyway. Pretty expensive.
