I've had the laptop for just over a month now, and so I thought it would be a great idea to install Linux on it just to see what it was like.

I installed it and all was well. But then when I shut down to go back to vista that's where all my problems began

I now can't boot to vista or linux as it says Grub Error 22 and then it moved onto Grub Error 17

I've been trying to find ways to fix this for a day or 2 and my laptop is just sitting on my desk being idle

I've burnt recovery disks btw and they didn't work

So I'm wondering as a last throw of the dice, can I buy a new harddrive and just take my current one out. And put this new one in.. Use recovery disks and then it should install vista for me?

Please help as I need my laptop with exams going on atm!

    Thanks, Ali

If other attemps to get the GRUB loader working you could always delete your Linux partitions and that should get you back to the Windows loader. Or you could format the whole HDD and then try the recovery disks.

I believe the recovery disks rely on a hidden partition on your current HDD to restore Vista so if you did buy a new HDD that wouldn't help much. But I've never used the recovery disks so I may be wrong.

    2 things.

I've burnt the recovery partition onto disks as Acer tell me to do

How do I format the whole HDD? and I can't find my windows partitions anywhere.. I can't even get to the screen where you choose which OS to boot too

I used to use Partition Magic back in the day, but I'm not sure what people use nowadays. A simple way is to install Linux and when it comes to the partitioning screen do your business and then cancel the installation.

Also, have you tried using the "Boot from primary drive" option when you stick in your Linux install disk?

Another thought, does your laptop have an option in the BIOS for which OS to boot with? I've seen a couple with options and maybe that might be an issue.
