Welcome to the computer club and the forum club! I shall try to give a few tips.
I guess all laptop users have at one time or another been wondering about the battery thingy, yours truly being no exception. Here are my answers:
1. My first response to this is how did you treat the battery the first time? Did you condition it to accept a full charge by draining it to almost empty and recharging (up to at least 3 times)? Take a look at these discussions here:

Li-Ions may not need this conditioning, but instruction manuals may still advise you to do it, for some reason.
If you're running many programs in the background, along with wireless access, etc, the battery may drain faster.
Set the display to minimum brightness, power management to Portable/Laptop which turns off the monitor and hard disk after a certain period of inactivity.
If all this is done in vain, you may need to ask the Acer agent to have a look at it before the warranty expires. The battery could be faulty.
2. I have a 15.4" screen and I'm using a resolution of 1024 x 768. I feel more comfortable with this than the 1280 resolution - words too small. With 800 x 600, I don't get enough desktop real estate. Of course, this is only my preference.
For gaming, it depends. If your system is not that fast to handle 3D games comfortably, you may have to reduce the resolution and/or the amount of detail in your game. For me, my main games are racing ones which I play on my desktop with a Microsoft Force Feedback Steering Wheel. Since my system does not have a very powerful video card, I need to use a resolution of 640 x 480 with medium detail. If I increase the resolution, I would have to reduce the detail to low, and that doesn't suit me. Play around with these settings until you have something that you can live with.
3. You mean you cannot find a good screensaver? If you enter the word "screensaver" in the Google search field, you'll get a list of 9,420,000 sites. Some of these can be downloaded free. Happy hunting!
4. If you go to Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices, you will be able to manipulate the sounds to some extent. For example, under the Volume tab, if you click the Advanced button, you can adjust the speaker setting and performance to suit you. However, laptop speakers will not give sounds anywhere near what desktop speakers can achieve. Not even with a built-in subwoofer like the Acer Aspire 2000-2025 laptops. -
Hi Diz
I have never heard any complaints about 4000/4500 battery life infact most users says it last upto 4 hours to 4.3 max Fully charged .
Battery life depends if are using WiFi or external USB powered device
so try disabling things you dont use normally
Try watching DVD and doing normal stuff it with unwanted deviced disable and updater your result here..
As for the built in speaker u can't do much try using external spkrs
