I read some reviews about the Acer Travelmate 8204 and it seems to be a really good notebook. Unfortunately none of the reviews I saw comments about the noise of the unit.

I would really like to know about the notebook's fan noise, especially during light tasks like internet browsing. Are the fans always running? Or are they off during light work?

    Thank you very much! :)

They seem to always be running, but at a slow rpm so they are not very noisy. It seems to be quieter than my apple g5 desktop and hp pavilion laptop.

Thank you! But it is a little disappointing... rsampson, what is your room temperature? Is it very hot?

At this level of performance and size, I don't think you'll find a laptop that will run on passive cooling only while on AC.

Present room temperature is 68 degrees, I am working with sql server on the laptop and no noticeable noise. Again nothing I can hear over the Apple G5 desktop which isn't very noisy.

Thanks rsampson. It seems the 8204 is not loud then.

Wiz33, well there are laptops out there with comparable configurations that run with passive cooling while doing light tasks. For example the Asus A6JA or the Samsung X20 line. So this should be no miracle.
